Is being a Cub fan special?
Yes, the Cubs have things no other team has. I'm glad I'm a Cub fan. 30%  30%  [ 8 ]
No, it's the same as being a fan of any other team. The Cubs just happen to be the team I pull for. 70%  70%  [ 19 ]

They sure are, and that's not necessarily a bad thing,

Wrigley Field and Wrigleyville are two separate entities though.
It's not a bad thing. In fact, in pretty much every other debate, Cubs fans love to talk about how awesome all three were. They are.

No. Your list is missing these things at least:
Frank Thomas
2005 World Series
Black Sox scandal

Disco demolition night/Bill Veeck's antics probably makes the list.

I don't know what the 5th would be. I'm not sure it's Hawk. I guess a case could be made for Minnie Minoso or Paul Konerko.

I would remove the word Loveable. Not winning forever is correct though.

I believe that would be true for most old teams.

If I ask random baseball fan to name 5 things about the white sox Im not sure the 2005 Series would be on there.

And if Frank Thomas is in, then you need to put Ernie Banks and Ron Santo on the list. They are at least as well known and associated with the team.

Of course it would. That would be #1. Not Veeck though, just the Disco one.

No one outside of Chicago gives a fuck about Konerko or Minoso

Hawk is known around the country as the Sox guy

BR, I am with you. As a huge Cubs fan, their situation is quite unique. I have been to about half of the other cities to see a game against the Cubs, and there is nothing else like it (going to Miami tomorrow and Thursday for the games). The Cubs have by far the best integration of the stadium and the neighborhood. There is lively activity before and after each game where most places are a drive up for the game and leave right away afterwards set-up. There are few other places where people are happy whether they win or lose because the atmosphere is fun besides the outcome of the game. That is derived from the fact that the majority of the games are played during the day when people are escaping from work, and the fans tend to skew Yuppie. The stadium, while outdated and lacking amenities, keeps fans close to the action and is generally appealing with the ivy, fans on the rooftops, drunk and rowdy bleacher crowd, etc. Even take me out to the ballgame is somewhat of an adventure where most other places just have a recording and put the words on the big screen.

It is a unique experience. Many people hate the Cubs for what they are and represent, but there is no doubt that a lot of fans love everything about being a Cubs fan right up to the pain of losing. On balance, I'd rather be a Cubs fan than any other MLB team. Many of my best memories are going to day baseball with various friends, family, and business associates.

I don't think so. The White Sox have two things that are clearly on the list in Frank Thomas and the 2005 World Series and I would characterize throwing the World Series as an on the field thing too. The Yankees may go 5/5.

It really would be the Red Sox, and maybe the Mets, as the only ones with a chance of having 4/5 things that define them be off the field and the Red Sox aren't on that list if you count recent World Series separately.

Konerko is known.

You could put the 1969 Cubs on there. They are well known for sure. Some great players there, but they epitomize the Cubs as a franchise as well because they didn't win anything.

The Sox list in no real order is;

Black Sox
'05 WS
Frank Thomas
Exploding Scoreboard (they were the first to do this)
Hawk

The Dodgers (another big market team that ruled its market...but hasn't won in this generation) would have to not win the WS for the next 80 years to match the Cubs, so yes, being a Cub fan is special.

South side/"South Siders" is one of the biggest things the Sox are known for nationally. Label that what you want.

Also must be on the list:
Black Sox
Disco Demolition

Up until 6 months ago, Ozzie was on the list.

No way '05 gets on there for the Sox, any more than any of the other teams that won a WS in the last couple decades. Is LAA known for their WS or a rally monkey? Florida Marlins - easy to make a top-5 for them without their WS titles. Cards recent titles? No. Hell, even the Red Sox aren't "known" for their recent titles.

Any list that doesn't include Harry Caray is completely useless. You do realize what still happens in the 7th inning right?

Cubs current list (no order):

Wrigley Field
"Lovable" losers
Harry Caray/7th inning stretch
'03 choke job
Ernie Banks - let's play two, Mr. Cub, etc.

And, if I had to list an actual team person currently, it's probably Theo right now.

edit: the toughest part is defining "Wrigley Field". Is that all inclusive or are things like the neighborhood, bleachers, ivy, etc. all separate entities?

I'd argue, historically, that Jack Brickhouse is still more closely associated with the Cubs than Harry. The Harry thing died real quick.

Sure they are. Why not? The Red Sox two titles are probably one of the biggest stories in MLB in the last 30 years. The Cubs would be the same.

Disagree, spany.

Red Sox would be known for;
Trading Babe Ruth
Green Monster
Ted Williams
Game 6
Breaking the curse in '04

How would you make a Marlins list and not put their 2 WS titles on there..or at the very least, putting Bartman on there?

There is no way a national audience would pick Santo over Harry Caray.

And today Ernie Banks would lose to the Billy Goat...or Bartman...or Ruth's called shot.

No man, the 05 WS is probably not on there. Its not a huge deal. The Orioles last WS probably woudlnt make their list, the Giants too.

Im not sure Thomas is either. Were talking about what they are known for correct?

Yankee Stadium is definitely on there.

False

2 years ago Dodger fans named Vin Scully the greatest Dodger ever.

Vin Scully, Dodger Stadium, and leaving early are all on that list.

Lets do every team, this is kinda fun.

So is that two of their 5? Of course not. Do you just pick one?

1. Fenway Pahk
2. Green Monster
3. Yankees/Sox rivalry
4. Carlton Fisk

All are more famous in history and nationally than either of those individual titles.

In unusual situations, I think it is just a natural response. There wasn't much else we could do. Simply amazing that one man's entire existence is this "act", and he literally knows nothing else.
