Wow, I'm kinda shocked by this. I would have figured he could have his pick of jobs.

Pretty cool that they're right in my backyard. I might check out a game next season.

I don't understand why Larry Brown even wants to work at this point. Dude is 71 years old.

Jerrance Howard hired as Larry Brown's assistant coach. He joins Kentucky's Rod Strickland and Illinois State coach Tim Jankovich on the staff. Jankovich is hired as the coach-in-waiting.

Entire staff was reportedly put together by World Wide Wes.

Right, and he pretty much slept through his last job with the Bobcats. How the hell is the guy going to handle coaching, and recruiting? Seems like a terrible idea.

Larry Brown's old enough to be someone's grandpa. If it didn't work with the Charlotte Bobcats, it's not going to work at SMU. His health has been an issue in recent years.

Larry Brown took the Bobcats to the playoffs. They should erect a statue for him there.

Apparently not. I wonder if he's still counting his $$$$ from his NBA career...

I predict they have 0 wins next year, but it may take a year or two for that to happen.

SMU is a better job then Ill St? Seems like a lateral move at best.

The guy is getting paid $1M to be an assistant at SMU. He only made $400K to be the HC at ISU.

SMU is trying to make it to the big time and willing to pay to do it.

Worked out well for them in the 80s.

It is surprising. But I highly doubt he will be doing any recruiting. His staff will take care of that and he will do the X's and O's.

You would think the recruiting would be adversely effected without him playing a key role though, right? I mean, Larry Brown is THE reason a recruit would go therefor, can't imagine them having many other selling points besides illegal benefits.

Oh I think he will definitely be a selling point and he may make some in home visits with his staff, but I think they can utilize him as the main recruiting tool without him having to be out on the road all the time like most college coaches.

Worldwide Wes actively sends players to certain programs, primarily Kentucky and to a lesser degree Memphis. He will do the same to SMU. Look for them to start getting some one/two and done players.

It's even debatable if all of them get paid. It's more about the association with WWW and what he can provide you access to upon "graduation". Money will likely change hands though but SMU will be smarter about it.

He's the most connected man in all of basketball, and he supposedly takes care of those who he makes connections too even if they don't become superstars. That's how he gets into the inner circle of so many of these younger kids. He can promise them his friendship and then when they need him he's there. Imagine if you had a friend who was a member at Augusta National. With a quick phone call, he could get you things that most others can't. WWW supposedly does a good job of taking care of the players he steers in certain directions, even if they don't become great or even good NBA players.

Therefore, kids want to be involved with him. If the kid makes it huge, it's another number in WWW's massive network. If the kid doesn't, he has options he otherwise wouldn't have. It's a win-win for WWW. If the kid makes it huge, he gains another major name. If the kid doesn't, by helping him out he lives up to his reputation and other kids know he's good to know.

The new SMU head basketball coach was on "The Dan Patrick Show" this morning. In addition to why he took the SMU job, Larry Brown had less than flattering words for his former boss, Charlotte Bobcats' owner Michael Jordan, as his team flirts with NBA all-time futility:

Saw the article on ESPN. It was a good read. Everyone keeps saying the same thing about MJ.
