You know what, f the fuck off! :P

Here's the thing. When the restaurant bill comes, I always tip 15-20%. I do that because when I was young and naive, I was told that's what you're "supposed" to do, and I guess through force of habit and societal pressure, I still do it.

When the pizza delivery guy comes to my door, I give him a $5 for his effort (I'm a few miles from the pizza place).

Other than that, take your begging ass and screw off. :P

What brings me to this topic is, the other day I phoned in a take-out order from a restaurant (something I hardly ever do) and didn't think to tip when I picked it up. Afterwards I happened to ask someone if I was supposed to tip. I got a shocked look of disgust in return that I would even ask such a question - OF COURSE I was supposed to tip!!! And I am a cheap fucking bastard who has no appreciation for other peoples' hard work!!! Society should shun me for my piss-poor attitude towards poor hard-working people unlike myself.

Really? It's not enough to pay $12 for two pieces of French Toast and a sausage link? But, someone had to put it in a box for me, so, shame on me and my $12 for not appreciating that. And by the way, who should I have tipped? The person who handed me the box? Or, the person who took my money? Or both? And should I have asked for who answered the phone and took my order, to give him a tip also? And should I have walked back into the kitchen and tipped the chef?

The whole concept of tipping is stupid. It's a ridiculous social custom that only serves to cause awkward moments, make people feel entitled to call others cheapskates, and create arguments. Society has long ago come up with a very simple mechanism to resolve all this. It's called the price. French Toast = $12. Buy it or don't.

If the greedy restaurant owner refuses to properly compensate his cooks, his servers, his phone answerers, and his take-out boxers, and thus I have to pay them all, then I might as well open my own damn restaurant. It would be easier.

Fire away.

Why would you ever tip on carryout?

Apparently people do. Google search tipping on take-out, and learn what a heartless fuck you are.

If I ever have someone try telling me I should tip them for picking up something carry out, I'm going to tell them to tip me for the delivery charge.

I do 25% at McDonald's. 20% on the drive-thru.

Anyone that tips carryout is a delusional bastard (no offense Doc, but tipping your butler to pick your food up doesn't count :P )

I don't tip carry out, I don't tip at Starbucks (nobody is getting a buck for pouring my $2.50 cup of coffee).

My baseline for tipping is 20%

Blow me away, and you get more.

If you're average, you're getting 20%

Piss me off and it's going down...don't suck at your job if you want to feed yourself and get gas.

But you have a McDonald's on the premises of your estate, correct?

I do, 2 or 3 bucks. If I'm a regular I do a little more. They will give you free stuff a lot of times.

I give a couple of bucks for delivery. For a tip at a restaurant, I give 15-20%, depending on service/waitress hotness. If the service really sucks, they get no tip.

The one that pisses me off is the automatic tip that is added for groups of people. Fuck that. That just ensures they are getting a tip without having to have quality service.

Ill tip extra if the service is good at the restaurant and they actually try. If they act like they don't give a shit, I don't either and their tip will affect it. As for tipping for food that you pick up, that's just fucking dumb.

I can't believe I forgot Starbucks. See, I'm not a cheap bastard, because I probably spend a small fortune annually on tips at Starbucks. I go basically every day and see the same people all the time, and they are always very friendly and never screw up my drink. So I do throw a a quarter or two in the tip jar. But yes that seems quite obnoxious on top of already paying $5 for a glorified hot chocolate. See, I am a softie.

I also tip $3-4 after a haircut. But, I don't tip the mailman or the garbage collector or the UPS guy, as some tipping websites say we are obligated to do.

Short story here. The wife's family all went out to the Hamptons last year(save the jokes) and we out to some very nice restaurant that was very expensive and was known for it's seafood. Anyways there was 8 of us so the waiter automatically got his 18% and he made sure not to take care of us at all. With all the drinking and eating that we did he was due about an $80 tip. Well we were all so pissed that this douchebag treated us like shit and had to be asked many many times if we could get drinks/service/food that we went up the the cashier at the end and got his gratuity removed and they obliged. So instead of his $80 tip I believe we left him $5-10 tops. So yeah fuck these people that just want to get hand outs for doing the bare mininum.

That is pretty cool, I doubt many places would do that.

Eating out in Europe is a fucked up experience all together! Two bucks for an 8 oz glass of water and every time they fill it up another 2 bucks. Then you got to pay to go take a piss. Crazy. I loved a lot of traveling in Europe, but eating out was not one of them.

I tip after a haircut...fuck tipping the UPS guy. I can't remember the last time I was actually home to deal with the douchebag anyway. Half the time, I have to go to the damn UPS hub to pick my package up, and that is a minimum 20 minute trip anyway.

UPS sucks.

Our ups guy is pretty cute. Sometimes I tip him but I order a lot of stuff. He's helped me put stuff in the house too.

Our garbage men now are great. If I forget to put the bins out they'll go to the side of the house and get them. Phenominal service deserves a little something. They get to our house way too early though.

Tipping on take out is just dumb. As far as place that automatically add gratuity to large parties they are probably doing their waitstaff a disservice. When going out with a large group and drinks have been going down everyone is throwing money in and the tip usually ends up being 30-40% because everyone throws in large bills and getting change is a hassle at that point. Plus you are having a good time and what's an extra $5 to go towards tip? If tip is automatically included alot of people just pay that and don't overtip even if the service was good.

Most big groups can take up almost an entire server's shift or section. With the amount of cheap assholes in the world it's a good idea to have automatic compensation in that case.

True. But my experience has been that most times the server pretty much ignores the big group. That is what pisses me off because it seems as if they do it because they already know a tip is coming.

I didn't notice that much when I used to work at Friday's. Every server I knew would rather not have a big group because the tip was less than taking care of multiple tables and they are usually a lot more needy.

I never tip for carryout, but I may begin doing so.

I always throw a few bucks at the guy who made my Sushi. He gives me free stuff every time.

Restaurant tips: 5% for lousy service, 15% for average service, 20% for good service, 25%-35% for great service.
Many companies have a rule of 20% max for tips on business meals. Thankfully, no one checks my expenses for tips because I leave 25% to 35% frequently.

Home delivery: $5.

Haircut: $8 to $10.

Hotels: A few bucks per day for whoever makes up my room.

Garbage Collectors & Mailman: Take care of them at Christmas & they will pay it back all year long.

I don't understand people who complain about tipping. Good tippers end up getting it back in great service & comps.

I always tip, and tip well, especially if it involves timely delivery. If I have to deal with god awful service I'll still tip, but it'll be a "fuck you" tip to let them know it was bullshit.

Nothing quite like this, however:

Geez, you know, here's a "tip" for waitpersons out there. Most people go to a restaurant to relax and have a good time. I'm really not interested in the giant chip on your shoulder because I showed up with 5 friends instead of 1. Good grief. And I think jackref has it right - it's not that the waiter is complacent knowing he's guaranteed his tip, it's that he's pissed that he's "only" getting 18%.

You know, if you aren't interested in being polite and hoping people have a good time at your place, I would suggest you are in the wrong line of work. And if you aren't able to get into a different line of work, then, hey, life is hard. Don't believe me, talk to a cancer patient. Talk to someone with a parent with alzheimers. Or a kid with leukemia. Yes that's over-dramatic, but, I'm just really tired of the whining. Maybe next time you wait on someone with an illness, or who tends to someone with an illness, or who served their country, you could leave THEM a tip. Just to show your "appreciation". Otherwise maybe YOU'RE a cheap bastard?

But then, you aren't tipping out of generosity or to show appreciation, are you? You're expecting something in return. Which isn't supposed to be the true nature of tipping, is it?

How do they do that? Look, I respect the work they do, but, how is what they do different than what I do, providing a service to customers in exchange for a wage?

So, do all of you carry-out tippers also give a little something to the cashier at the grocery store? How about at the hardware store or Target?

If not, why? It's the same thing.
