I do think it is important to be supportive throughout the entire pregnancy. I think some men have taken it to be suffocating. 2+ weeks is a long time before a birth and doctors have a pretty good handle estimate if you will be early. He was coming home in three days anyway, so stay, do your work and come home a day early the day before your next start. This is kind of like the Spiegal thing where the time off is unnecessary.

It's not just my stance on Danks, I have what you might call an anti-stance regarding the way the game has come to be viewed through statistics which are ultimately averages.

I hate when I hear someone say a guy "pitched well enough to win". If he had pitched well enough to win, he would have won. I guess what the guy is really saying is that the pitcher pitched well enough to win some hypothetical game vs. a different team in a different ballpark with different weather conditions and a different plate umpire than the game he was actually pitching on the day he actually pitched.

It's easy to assume that a guy with a low ERA will eventually have a good W/L record, but it isn't always true and it isn't always due to factors other than the pitcher himself.

Back to Danks, I'm not ready to call the guy gutless. I remember him letting it all hang out in the "Blackout Game". But for the better part of two seasons now he's been pitching just well enough to lose a lot of the time. His team scores and gives him a lead, the next half-inning he gives it up- or at least tries to give it up.

People are trying to run Corey Crawford out of town for playing goalie exactly the way John Danks pitches.
