Been there twice (and I don't drink, so I'm giving honest, sober opinions here). Old-fashioned box diner (just the grill and a counter with eight or nine stools). Sort of feel like you need to be smoking and wearing a suit and fedora to have Edward Hopper paint the scene while there.

First time I went at around 11 PM, specifically to have the slinger. The slinger is a disgustingly good mess - hash browns, grilled onions, two hamburger patties, two sunny-side-up eggs, with the whole thing smothered in chili. Mello Yello on tap, which was a nice surprise. Slinger below, if the photo links.

Second time back had French toast and a Denver Omelet. Good stuff, well worth the drive from the Wheaton area. Cash only but worth the trip.

Is that a before or after picture of your meal?

I used to live right around the corner from there at 1618 W. Byron. My friends and I usually call it the "Lotto Diner" because of the big Lotto sign. Have had a lot of late night drunken meals there. I once came close to getting kicked out of there with Iowa running back Nick Bell after dining on a Slinger. We might have been laughing a bit too loud. Poor Donald the Grillman got his his head cut off in there one night. A guy I grew up with named Steve Hendrix took over and manned the grill late nights for several years. His sidekick/assistant was a guy named Marty. Steve fancied himself a comedian as well as a cook. One night I asked about the perch and if anyone ever ordered it. Steve said, "You want the perch? Hey, Marty, go see if there's any perch left in the mop bucket." Good times.

Great coffee....excellent corned beef hash and wonderful hangover cure place. I highely recommend it. On the minus side it kind of smells and if you go in at the wrong time there is a line....Just like cubbiegirlshamus' bedroom. But there is less of a chance of projectile vomiting after eating at the Diner Grill. So there is that.

How this place stays in business I have no idea. Dump of dumps. Makes Jeri's GRill look like fine dining.

The building itself looks like it cant withstand a 30 MPH wind!

As soon as I saw the topic I was wondering if anyone was going to bring that up, then I remembered that you are a member here and knew it was only a matter of time.

For those that glossed over that comment without understanding what JORR was referring to....a few years back someone went in there and stabbed the cook to death.
