What were you doing at 15 years of age?

http://newsroom.intel.com/community/intel_newsroom/blog/2012/05/18/fifteen-year-old-creates-non-invasive-pancreatic-cancer-detection-tool

Jack Andraka, 15, of Crownsville, Md. was awarded first place for his new method to detect pancreatic cancer at this year's Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, a program of Society for Science & the Public. Based on diabetic test paper, Jack created a simple dip-stick sensor to test blood or urine to determine whether or not a patient has early-stage pancreatic cancer. His study resulted in over 90 percent accuracy and showed his patent-pending sensor to be 28 times faster, 28 times less expensive and over 100 times more sensitive than current tests. Jack received the Gordon E. Moore Award, named in honor of Intel co-founder and retired chairman and CEO of $75,000.

Andraka's test is a true diagnostic breakthrough since there are currently no non-invasive tests for detecting pancreatic cancer. Early detection of this cancer would be a boon to patients since the five-year survival rate for localized pancreatic cancer is 23 percent. While that doesn't sound great, it's a hell of a lot better than the 5 percent overall five-year survival rate for patients diagnosed with the disease.

He is going to be a really rich nerd , really quick!

I can only imagine Pfizer and Abbott are literally camped at his doorstep with cash just to talk to him.

Abbott will be having someone break into his house tonight and copy his hard drive while the family is watching fireworks.

The cancer neoplasm along with a a small number of skin of the pancreas and its other linked organs is removed during the whipple procedure. A circumvent is also formed in the surgical procedure amongst the stomach and also mid-gut plus the hepatic tube, which makes it possible for the food to get moved to the mid-intestine as well as get most of the important digestive juices and also bile juices, hence enabling the digestive system to operate properly.
