No offense meant but the whole "I gotta guy" way of thinking should not apply to some guy coming in to fuck with the air you breathe or a furnace. I would go with a reputable firm (If there are any). If something screws up,you want to talk to a company not some "gotta guy" guy.

big fan has plenty of those guys. just don't have them do any concrete work

Opinions on brands?
Who to buy from?
A/C efficiency, what the hell does it all mean?!?!?!

What is a reasonable price.

3200 sq feet, 2 story, 4 bedrooms.

Ready.................GO.

can't really spit out a btu per square foot rule of thumb...every home is different depending on heat loss, amount of windows..insulation..ducts leak?...and dozens of other things....some guys will say 20 btu per s.f. cooling and 40 btu for heating...not an accurate way to go about it. too bad you guys waited so long to upgrade, all the write offs were given the last couple years.

So I have a leak in my A/C unit and I am about 6#s short of freon, to refill this would be about $400 given the price of R22 right now/$60 a lb. Or I could get a whole new American Standard 2.5 ton unit with a furnace (as I have an old furnace) for the low price of $4600 installed. Anyone deal with any other companies or have any experience with this? Didn't really budget for that right now, so I might have to go out and buy a couple window units for now..ugh!

usually you can find a service guy to do on the side and 400 $ sounds insane...i have paid 100 $ before ..just because dude came out right away...if you live in the city i can probably give ya a couple guys numbers to fill ya up for the summer....if i were you and i was going to buy a new condenser/coil and line set and furnace i would buy it myself at marzullo supply 88th kedzie..you do not need a refrigeration card... buy everything yourself and save 35% and have a tin knocker or hvac guy install....the new condenser comes with enough gas if you can keep the line set under 25 feet...

This! I bought mine from the same place and paid $2200 for the furnace, condensor, coil, all new lines, humidifier and a drop in kit for the filter. Paid a guy $500 then to install.

Beervendor, if you can't budget it now, do it soon. When we moved here we were renting a two bedroom 1500 sq ft town house while we looked for a house. Eventually, we had the house we live in now built (4 bedroom 2200 square feet, vaulted ceilings etc.). Brand new Heat pump/AC unit & furnace and it is high efficiency and our electric built wend DOWN significantly. In the townhouse our electric bill was 200 in the summer to 400 in the winter. Now, it is 120 in the summer and 230 in the winter. It will save you money in the long run.

I had to fill it up last year with about 4#s or so and am almost bone dry, so obviously there is a leak somewhere. I have about a 20yr old system currently and it's probably in my best interest to get a whole new system. The guy said he could pump nitrogen into the system and find the leak and that would cost about $300 or so, but if it's the coil I'd have to get a new system anyway as it just doesn't make sense to fix it.

I guess I'm just trying to see about how much I should expect to pay for AC unit and furnace, I am going to call around but I just thought I'd throw it out there.

Beervendor, You need to find a new HVAC guy, because the goof that you are currently working with is screwing you. Leaks are easy to diagnose & fix. I have a good HVAC guy. PM me if you are interested.

So, I called around to a bunch of friends and it turns out a guy I grew up with now runs a HVAC company. He came out Saturday and charged me $200 to refill the freon. He also said he would be able to hook it up with a new unit and furnace for 3k instead of the $4500 or so that I was quoted from other companies.
