Two words:

Door County, like the UP but closer.

Door county=Chicago on vacation. UP is more secluded and has some awesome vista's and is a lot less filled with Chi town yuppies

And some unique bars too. Lumberjack Tavern in Big Bay features 6 foot chainsaws hanging from the ceiling. We were the only ones not wearing flannel and our car was the only one in the lot with Illinois plates. I think the most expensive beer was $3.25.

Our son goes to school up there. If it wasn't for that I don't think I would have ever stepped foot in the UP.

Or you can go for the best of both worlds. Last year in a charity auction my girlfriend won a weeklong stay in a cabin. There was a river right in back of it that is the border of Wisconsin and the U.P. It was right near Iron Mountain, MI. I never realized that Tom Izzo and Steve Mariucci were best friends who grew up together and dominated high school sports up there, but that's what the sign says. Anyway, it was kind of nice to get away from the city for a bit, but there was no cell service. I had to drive into town just to check the race results. A whole week was a little too long. My girlfriend loved it though. And I did catch a smallmouth out of that river that was about as big as the one Mac got yesterday.

if you are nothern Illinois then I am in Canada....if you can get to Lake Geneva in 30 minutes then do you live in like ummmm I don't know woodstock or McHenry, even of which you are looking more then 30 minutes.

I got to Lake Geneva in 40 minutes from Gurnee, which wasn't that bad.

Half the drive up/down is spent getting stuck in Lake Zurich, I'm pretty sure.

I can get to Lake Geneva in 25 minutes. The UP? Keep it. That place is a freaking nightmare.
Pretty yes... jobs? no. What a dump. My ex's dad died up there and we had to clean his [
place out. I'd be happy to never step foot on U.P. ground again.

The great thing about living in Sauganash is that I am far enough from rogers park bryan and parkridgesteph that they cannot walk over to the house unannounced but not so far that I cannot leave a lit paper bag of dog poop on their front door step when I need a laugh
