Mark Appel RHP Stanford: The consensus #1 pick coming into the season Appel has a classic pitcher frame (6'5” 215) and the strong arm to go with it. His plus fastball sits comfortably at 94-96 and can touch 98-100. Appel has a power slider that projects as a plus pitch and a nice feel for his changeup which could develop into an average pitch. Appel's command is inconsistent which leads him to be hit harder than he should considered his stuff and his mechanics are probably too good. Appel is so free and easy he gives the hitter too good a look. There is no arguing the arm strength and with improved command and added deception Appel projects as a top of the rotation starter and potential ace.

Byron Buxton OF Appling County HS: The top athlete in the draft Buxton is a 5 tool player with the highest ceiling of any player in the draft. Buxton (6'3” 185) has a slight upper cut swing and lightning quick hands that produce plus bat speed and consistent hard contact. He projects to have plus power but needs to learn to hit to the opposite field. Buxton is a plus plus runner with near elite speed and a solid outfielder with very good baseball instincts. Buxton's arm strength is plus plus where he can hit 93 MPH on the mound. Buxton is still raw and will need to make adjustments when facing more velocity and better breaking balls. Buxton projects as a superstar outfielder.

Mike Zunino C Florida: The reigning SEC player of the year has the highest floor of any player in the draft. Zunino (6'2” 220) has strong hands that produce tons of bat speed and excellent hand eye coordination that allows him to consistently barrel up the ball and hit for a high average. Zunino has a line drive swing and can drive the ball to all fields. Zunino is a very good athlete and projects to be a plus defensive catcher thanks to quick feet and a strong arm. Zunino is very good at blocking pitches and has a quick release with a smooth transfer from glove to hand. Zunino is an excellent leader and even calls his own pitches which is rare for a college catcher. Zunino projects as a very good everyday catcher and middle of the order hitter.

Kevin Gausman RHP LSU: A draft eligible sophomore Gausman is a raw athlete with a very good pitchers frame (6'4” 190) and an extremely strong arm. Gausman's plus fastball sits comfortably 93-95 and can touch 97 with excellent downward movement. Gausman throws a curveball and a slider. The curve flashes as an average pitch with 12-6 break and the slider flashes as a potential plus pitch with tight spin but both are inconsistent due to mechanical inconsistency. Gausman's changeup is a potential plus pitch with excellent deception and late sink. Gausman has trouble repeating his delivery which leads to command problems. Gausman projects as a middle of the rotation starter with potential top of the rotation starter with refined mechanics and better pitch selection.

Kyle Zimmer RHP San Francisco: Zimmer has the most helium of any player in the draft. A converted pitcher Zimmer (6'4” 220) is an excellent athlete and polished pitcher despite his inexperience on the mound. Zimmer's plus fastball sits comfortably 93-95 and can touch 98 with good late life. Zimmer has a hammer 12-6 plus curveball. Zimmer's changeup is a work in progress due to tendency to overthrow but shows potential to be average. Zimmer's mechanics are smooth and repeatable as he uses his powerful lower half and finishes his pitches well. Zimmer has twp plus pitches and a nice feel for a third and projects as a middle of the rotation starter with top of the rotation starter with an improved changeup.

Michael Wacha RHP Texas A&M: Wacha has moved up draft board thanks to two plus pitches and an excellent pitchers frame (6'6” 215). Wacha's plus downhill fastball sits comfortably 92-94 and tops out at 96 and he's able to maintain that velocity deep into games. Wacha's plus changeup is a wipeout pitch with excellent deception and late downward movement. Wacha doesn't have a good feel for his below average slider that lacks tightness and depth. Wacha's mechanics are free and easy and has good command of the fastball and changeup. Wacha projects as a workhorse middle of the rotation starter and potential top of the rotation with an improved third pitch.

Gavin Cecchini SS Barbe HS: The younger brother of Red Sox farmhand Garin, Gavin (6'1” 180) is an athletic middle infielder with 5 tool potential. Cecchini has quick hands and strong wrists that produces lots of bat speed. Cecchini has a short quick line drive swing that allows him to make consistent hard contact. Cecchini has gap power and could develop home run power with added strength and loft. Cecchini is already a polished fielder with excellent instincts, good range and a strong arm. Cecchini is an above average runner with good base running skills. Cecchini is a fundamentally sound all around player with a very good chance to stick at SS. Cecchini projects as an above average middle infielder and top of the order hitter.

Carlos Correa SS Puerto Rico HS: Correa (6'3” 190) is a big athletic 17 year old with good strength and fluid movements. Correa is still a little raw at the plate but flashes the ability to make good hard contact due to quick twitch hands and strong wrists. Correa has a slight upper cut swing with the ability to elevate the ball and has room to add power with added strength. Correa is an excellent defender with plus range,soft hands and a plus arm. Correa has average speed with very good base running instincts. Correa has 5 tool potential but will probably outgrow SS and settle in at a corner position. Correa projects as a top of the order hitter.

Max Fried LHP Harvard-Westlake HS: Fried (6'4” 175) is a highly projectable lefty with good athleticism and a nice feel for pitching. Fried's fastball sits 90-92 and tops out at 95 with good arm side run and late sink. Fried's wipeout curveball is plus plus with dramatic downward break and tight spin. Fried's changeup is average but flashes plus potential . Fried is smooth and loose but has some trouble repeating his delivery. Fried has good command and projects to plus command with refined mechanics. Fried projects as a middle of the rotation starter and potential top of the rotation starter with added strength and realized projection.

Lucas Giolito RHP Harvard-Westlake HS: The biggest wildcard in the draft Giolito was considered for the top pick before elbow soreness ended his season. Giolito's (6'6” 230) heavy plus plus fastball sits comfortably 96-98 and touched triple digits on a number of occasions before the injury. Giolito's curveball/slider is a plus pitch with plus plus potential. Giolito has a nice feel for his changeup with good deception and excellent arm action. Despite the injury Giolito has a smooth clean delivery with excellent command for such a young pitcher. It's all about health with Giolito and if a team takes a chance on him they could get a top of the rotation starter with ace potential.

Marcus Stroman RHP Duke: Stroman (5'9” 185) is an athletic undersized pitcher with an electric arm. Stroman's plus fastball sits 94-96 and can touch 98. Stroman has a plus hard slider that projects as an out pitch. Stroman's changeup is also a plus offering that has excellent deception and late sink. Stroman is free and easy and is able to repeat his delivery well. Stroman has excellent command of all three pitches. The only question with Stroman is if he'll have the durability to remain a starter. Stroman projects as a top of the rotation starter and back of the bullpen reliever with closer stuff.

Deven Marrero SS ASU: Marrero (6'0” 195) is one of the best defensive players in the draft with a potential hit tool. Marrero is an aggressive hitter with very good contact ability thanks to fantastic hand-eye coordination. Marrero is unlikely to develop home run power but a solid line drive swing should produce plenty of doubles. Marrero is a plus plus defender with excellent footwork, outstanding range and soft hands. Marrero has a plus throwing arm with a quick release and pinpoint accuracy. Marrero is an average runner with very good base running instincts. Marrero projects as a very good everyday shortstop and top of the order hitter.

Albert Almora OF Mater Academy HS: Almora (6'2” 180) is a polished high school player with solid tools and strong baseball skills. Almora has an easy line drive swing that produces lots of bat speed and makes consistent hard contact. Almora has gap power and could develop home run power with added strength and lift. Almora is a plus defensive player who gets excellent reads on balls in the gaps with a very strong accurate throwing arm. Almora is a plus runner with very good base running skills. Almora projects as a very good centerfielder and top of the order hitter.

Richie Shaffer 3B Clemson: Shaffer (6'3” 205) is one of the best college power hitters available and has shot up draft boards. Shaffer has tremendous raw bat speed and a very advanced approach at the plate. Shaffer has plus power and gets excellent extension and elevation to drive the ball to all fields. Shaffer is below average defensively but has athleticism to improve. Shaffer has decent range but needs to improve his reaction time and footwork. Shaffer has a plus throwing arm but the poor footwork hurts his accuracy. Shaffer has average speed with good base running instincts. Shaffer projects as a corner infielder/outfielder and middle of the order power hitter.

Courtney Hawkins OF Mary Carroll HS: Hawkins (6'3” 210) is one of the more intriguing athletes in the draft based on his abilities on the mound and as a 5 tool outfielder. Hawkins is a raw aggressive hitter with a developing approach. Hawkins has tons of raw power and can drive the ball to all fields though he tends to get pull happy. Hawkins is a plus defender with excellent range and instincts. Hawkins has a plus plus arm with a fastball in the mid 90's. Hawkins has plus speed and is a very good base runner. Hawkins is better suited as an everyday player where he projects as a star center fielder and middle of the order hitter.

Stryker Trahan C Acadiana HS: Trahan (6'1” 220) is the best high school catcher in the draft thanks to an impressive set of tools and a power left handed bat. Trahan has a solid approach, good bat speed and makes consistent hard contact. Trahan has easy raw power and gets excellent leverage and lift to drive the ball to all fields. Trahan is good defensively with solid footwork and soft hands. Trahan has an above average arm and quick release but needs to work on his accuracy. Trahan is an above average runner. Trahan projects as a very good everyday catcher and middle of the order hitter.

David Dahl OF Oak Mountain HS: Dahl (6'2” 190) is one of the top high school bats in the draft thanks to his a natural hitting ability and solid tools across the board. Dahl is a plus hitter with an advanced approach and very good pitch recognition. Dahl has plus bat speed a line drive swing and makes consistent hard contact. Dahl has plus power and the ability to drive the ball to all fields. Dahl is a plus defender with excellent range and instincts. Dahl has plus arm strength but needs to improve his accuracy. Dahl has above average speed. Dahl may not stick in center but projects as a star corner outfielder and middle of the order hitter.

Chris Stratton RHP Mississippi St: Stratton (6'3” 200) has shot up draft boards thanks to a great junior season and increased velocity on his fastball. Stratton's fastball sits 91-93 and can touch 95 with excellent late life. Stratton's plus slider is a true out pitch with tight spin and downward action. Stratton also throws an above/above average curveball that flashes plus. Stratton's changeup is development and shows average potential. Stratton has a free and easy delivery with plus command and excellent poise. Stratton projects as a middle of the rotation starter.

Matt Smoral LHP Solon HS: Smoral (6'8”230) is a monster lefty with surprisingly good mechanics and excellent pitchability. The physically imposing Smoral has a plus fastball that sits 90-92 and can touch 94 with late sinking action. Smoral has a tight sharp breaking slider that projects as a plus pitch. Smoral's changeup is a bit of a mystery due to the fact that he doesn't have to throw it very often. Smoral has a free and easy delivery for someone his size with very good command and an excellent feel for pitching. With improved strength and endurance (and a full recovery from foot surgery) Smoral projects as a workhorse-type starter with top of the rotation potential.

Stephen Piscotty 3B Stanford: Piscotty (6'3” 200) is a polished college hitter with an excellent approach and feel for hitting. Piscotty is a plus hitter who makes consistent hard contact with a smooth right handed swing and good bat speed. Piscotty has average power and plus potential with added strength and loft. Piscotty is an average defender with limited range and may not have the ability to stick at third long term.. Piscotty has a plus arm with a mid 90's fastball and could get a look on the mound. Piscotty is an average runner with good instincts. Piscotty projects as an everyday corner player and middle of the order hitter.

So is vitters ever going to be a ML 3B or should the Cubs take the Shaffer kid?

Vitters may make it to the bigs but it's very unlikely he will be an impact player. He's a corner player whose power and defense hasn't developed. If they move him off third that will put even more demand on his bat and he hasn't shown the ability to put up big time offensive numbers.

#6 may be a little high for Shaffer. The Cubs need pitching badly and there should be a good college arm available. If they don't go for a college pitcher they may go for a high school shortstop or outfielder.

Lance McCullers Jr RHP Jesuit HS: Son of former big leaguer Lance Sr, McCullers (6'2” 200) has the best raw stuff in the draft. McCullers plus plus fastball sits 94-96 and can touch 98 with late life. McCullers plus plus slider is a swing and miss pitch with tight spin and disappearing movement. McCullers hard 12-6 curveball is above average with plus potential. McCullers has decent feel for his changeup but it lacks deception and movement. McCullers delivery and arm slot is wildly inconsistent and leads to poor command. McCullers has a good feel for pitching but there are questions if he can remain a starter or be forced to the bullpen.

Corey Seager 3B Northwest Cabaruss HS: Seager (6'3” 205) the younger brother of Seattle Mariner Kyle, is already bigger and has a higher ceiling than his brother. The athletic Seager is a plus left handed hitter with an advanced approach and a line drive swing that produces consistent hard contact. Adam Brett Walker. He's projected as an early 2nd rounder but could sneak into the supplemental round. He's playing 1B but could be moved to the outfield. He has pretty good speed for his size (6'5" 220) and good power but lots of swing and miss. Milwaukee's supplemenal pick at #38 may be a little high to take him there. Doubtful he'll still be around for their 2nd round pick at #92

Any Illinois high school prospects projected to go high in the draft?

Kevin Ross (SS Niles West) could be the first Illinios player chosen . I've read as high as the 3rd round and as low as the 10th. He's committed to Michigan and is a real good athlete but not much of a hitter. It will depend on how much teams believe in his athleticism and ability to develop as a hitter.

The best player in the state is Alex Young (LHP Carmel). He throws 90-92 with a nasty slider. He's a max effort Kid and didn't pitch much this year because of arm soreness. He has a pretty strong committment to TCU and teams may shy away from him because of signabilty issues.

Other players who could get drafted are: Blake Hickman (C, RHP, 1B Simeon), Jason Goldstein (C Highland Park), Ryan Borucki (LHP Mundelien), Brett Lilek (LHP Marion Catholic) and Kyle Funkhouser (RHP Oak Forest).

Hensley's changeup is developing and could be average with more use. Hensley throws straight over the top with a very repeatable delivery and has very good command. Hensley projects as a back of the bullpen reliever or middle of the rotation starter with an improved changeup.

DJ Davis OF Stone HS: Davis ( 5'11” 170) is a tremendous athlete and the fastest player in the draft with developing tools. Davis has quick wrists and strong hands that produce lots of bat speed with a flat line drive swing. Davis has way below average power but with added strength could produce lots of gap and down the line doubles and triples. Davis gets good reads and has tremendous range in the outfield with very good instincts. Davis has a below average arm. Davis has elite speed with excellent base running skills. Davis projects as a very good center fielder and leadoff hitter.

Addison Russell SS Pace HS: Russell (6' 1” 210) was thought to be a corner infielder but a 20 pound weight loss has some thinking he can stay at SS. Russell is raw at the plate with inconsistent mechanics but has quick hands and plenty of bat speed. Russell has raw power but his swing is long. Russell has above average range, soft hands and a very strong accurate arm. Russell is an above average runner with good base running skills. If Russell can keep the weight off he can stay at shortstop but a move to third base is likely. Russell projects as a middle of the order hitter.

Joey Gallo 3B/1B Bishop Gorman HS: Gallo (6'5” 210) is a big time power hitter who may ultimately end up a first baseman. Gallo has a power left handed swing and poor pitch recognition that produces lots of swing and miss. Gallo has plus plus power and a natural upper cut swing that drives the ball out to all fields. Gallo is athletic for his size but lacks range and feel at third base. Gallo has a very strong arm and could get a look in the bullpen with a 95+ fastball. Gallo has below average speed. Gallo projects as a first baseman but could end up as a corner outfielder and a middle of the order power hitter.

Lucas Sims RHP Barbe HS: Sims (6'2” 195) is a very good athlete who has moved up draft boards after refining his mechanics and adding a little velocity. Sims exploding plus fastball sits 91-93 and can touch 97 with good late arm side run. Sims hard slider is a plus offering with tight spin and depth. Sims slow curveball is a solid pitch with good deception but is inconsistent. Sims changeup is developing. Sims has a clean easy repeatable delivery with very good command. Simms projects as a middle of the rotation starter with top of the rotation potential with an improved changeup.

6. Chicago Cubs: Albert Almora, OF, Mater Academy HS (Fla.)

The Cubs seem pretty excited at the thought of drafting Almora, and I think they will get the chance. If not Almora, then I could see them in a similar boat as the Royals and target either Fried or Giolitio, though they would obviously give heavy consideration to Zimmer if he’s still on the board.



13. Chicago White Sox: Chris Stratton, RHP, Mississippi State

It appeared as though the White Sox were targeting impact bats—preferably of the prep variety—early on, but I’ve heard that they are now in on college arms. Stratton is the best one of the board, although they could wind up with Hawkins or Shaffer if he slips.


27. Milwaukee Brewers: Joey Gallo, 3B/1B/RHP, Bishop Gorman HS (Nev.)

The Brewers' system is devoid of high-ceiling bats as well as power. Gallo would help solve both of those deficiencies.
