I just wish Dewskie could see this but he doesn't ever read this section.

A thread in the White Sox section about the White Sox being overrun by Cubs fans bashing not only Hawk, but Sox fans for being obsessed.

Oh, but all the Cubs fans that in here are so much better than evil obsessed Sox fans like Frank, good dolphin, and JORR.

The same ump who blew a call that caused Leyland to go nuts last week.

I would just like to speak out on behalf of all Cubs fans who don't give a crap what Hawk said or about the call because we didn't watch the game or listen to the broadcast.

Seriously, JORR.

Talk some sense to the kid

I've been trying to talk sense into Kid for over 5 years now, hasn't worked.

People need to stop taking him so seriously, he is a sports announcer who admits he is a homer. Who cares?

Funny how no Cubs fans here mention when Hawk compliments umpires-- something he has done quite often this season and at least twice that I heard in the Rays series-- yet they are among the first to post about Hawk saying something bad about an ump.

Man you are such a blind defender.

Almost everyone here Cub and Sox fans alike agree it was overboard.

And yeah, Hawk complimented the umps during the winning streak. That doesnt make up for the bitching he does on a regular basis and even if it did, why would someone post that?

Thats not interesting. Hawk went crazy, that IS interesting.

Joe West is bad. I havent heard of any non White Sox problems with Wegner? Do you have some instances with other teams?

People have been bitching about Wegner's strike zone for awhile, he struggles with the lower strikes. No comment on Hawk's "rant".

Just heard on 'SCR that Selig & Reinsdorf had a "Tawk with Hawk".

Suspend him,prove Frank wrong!

I don't think they can. Hawk works for CSN, doesn't he? I don't think he's a Sox employee... I could be wrong.

You are correct, he is an employee of CSN not the MLB.

OK,but doesn't Jerry own a piece of Comcast? What's the difference,if Reinsdorf says sit out a few games,Hawk sits out. At the very least I bet he tones down the rhetoric.

Nope!
No suspension. And he'll still go nuts if a call goes against the Sox. He just won't say that an ump "knows nothing about the game" or something like that. He'll still say, 'You gotta be bleepin me' among many other things that piss off Cubs fans :D :D

Hey,I liked that "bleeping" comment...Thought it was hilarious.
Well,Good for Hawk. I like the guy. I think Kasper & Brenly our good but need
to "step out" more. Especially Kasper,he plays it safe too much.

When Len steps out, he says things like Kerry Wood and Carlos Zambrano should have their numbers retired by the Cubs.

It wasn't just the umpire-attacking, but the general tone he's taken on over the last few years that rubs me wrong. Normally, I'm always in favor of loosening restrictions on language, and I think trying to shield kids from profanity they already hear on the playground is pretty silly. But there's always been something traditionally down-homey and family friendly about baseball broadcasts, moreso than other sports broadcasts. It was seemed a bit distasteful when Hawk started using "hell yes!" and then "you gotta be bleeping me!" However, at least if he's using them in a celebratory mood, it's not so bad. When he starts using those phrases in fits of apoplectic anger, it takes on a different tone. It feels like an angry dad losing his temper at his family, and you just feel uncomfortable for everyone involved.

One is an organization of professional baseball teams, the other is a TV station. Yes, Reinsdorf probably could tell him to sit and he would. In fact, I believe in 2009 he was suspended for a day or two, but it was just not publicly acknowledged.

Or maybe he just sounds like a self-acknowledged homer that shouldn't be taken too seriously.. I highly doubt kids are going to be scared for life by a pissed off hillbilly

Homerism I can accept, but ideally it would be done in a good-natured way. Or even a whiny attitude about umps, like say Stacy King has, would be better than an outright spitting-angry one.

Not saying the rant was the right decision, but people are making a bigger deal out of it the it is. This is not the first time an announcer has went off on an umpire.

Really? And what would happen if you approached the bench and screamed that the judge has no business on the bench and the judicial review (or whatever) should send him back to law school so he can learn it since he has no idea what law is all about? I don't think that would play well in a courtroom.

Wait? What did I miss? Did Hawk run down on the field or something? You can talk about judges outside of the courtroom or in a sideroom all you like.

Really? So say you're in the middle of a trial, you go outside and start yelling to reporters about how that judge needs to be held accountable, needs to go back to law school because he has no idea what the law is all about, screaming "what are you doing, Judge X?!"... you're telling me that that would have no effect on your clients trial, would have no effect on you as a practicing attorney? That the judge will continue to be completely impartial to you and your motions, objections et al in the future and there's no sanctions for that? As a client, would you want an attorney that would behave in such a manner? I don't think you mean what you say when you say we should all approach our jobs and lives with such passion. Restraint is part of maturity and professionalism.

For the record I think Hawk was probably right... right up until he started screaming hells and suggesting that the umpire didn't belong as an umpire... Hawk sure didn't mind the 2nd base neighborhood play a few days prior when Wegner made a questionable call beneficial to the Sox. I don't think he even said anything about it at all.

EXACTLY!

Because that is how the game is called nowadays. And its also protocol for umps to give warnings before the start giving players and coaches the heave ho.

Well, yeah and no. Same day or maybe one day on either side the Cubs got hit for a neighborhood play. It's not quite "how the game is played". There's only so much you get or don't get.
Something tells me Wegner tossed Quintana becuse of things we weren't privy to. Who knows what AJ said to the batter... he's a talker we know that. If he said something to him, maybe "here's one coming up your ass" or some damn thing that he'd say then here comes a purpose pitch... maybe Wegner had enough. I've seen pitchers and coaches tossed without warnings too dude. Its not like there's a rule about giving warnings first... also... who knows what was said before the game? I know umps give "off the record" warnings during the card exchange too. Perhaps something said between innings as well. We don't really know.

Either way, I believe in my heart that Hawk probably was right, but when he went wrong was the unprofessional manner in which he went about it. Just a really bad example of how to handle your business. You can say things without saying them. And B&B were absolutely right about how silly it was for Hawk to be that upset in the days after the game that he overlooks the fact that the Sox were on a killer winning streak and had swept two fuckin series! Why not just be happy about the turn around that the team has instead of focusing so much anger on something as inconsequential as a tossed pitcher in a winning effort?
