TORONTO (AP) Six years after he last pitched in the major leagues, Mark Prior has been promoted to Triple-A.

Boston assigned the oft-injured right-hander to their Triple-A affiliate in Pawtucket on Friday. Prior, who signed a minor league contract with the Red Sox on May 2, had been at extended spring training in Florida.

Red Sox manager Bobby Valentine called Prior's comeback attempt a "great story." A former starter, Prior has been pitching out of the bullpen since signing with Boston.

Prior was the second overall pick when he was chosen by the Chicago Cubs in the 2001 amateur draft. He finished third in NL Cy Young Award voting in 2003, after going 18-6 with a 2.43 ERA, but his career was derailed by a serious shoulder injury and other ailments.

Prior pitched in 11 games at three levels of the New York Yankees system in 2011, going 0-0 with a 2.25 ERA in 12 innings.

Never understood why people give this guy so much crap. Had some great games for the Cubs, too bad he couldn't ever stay healthy. I wish him well and hope he is able to get back to the majors.

I understand where you are coming from, but it seems obvious he used PED's. It's hard to root for someone like that, plus he did not get the job done in game 6.

I put more blame on Alou and Gonzalez then Prior for game six.

They already have Rich Hill in the bullpen, why not another?

If Alou stays calm (he probably doesn't catch it anyways) none of that happens. Prior melted down after the Gonzalez ball but Dusty never came out to calm the situation either.

I still say Prior didnt use anything.

Not because he was a Cubs player, but because he was kind of a pussy. The guy needed surgery for 5 years and was scared of the knife. So I could see the same guy scared of the needle and some "illegal drugs".

Well said

And he was completely out of gas in that inning in game 6. His velocity was down in the 5th. Maybe if Dusty's dumbass didnt keep him in for 8 innings with a 9 run lead in game 2 he could have finished.

243 innings in his second year, btw

Wasn't the knock on him that he couldn't tell the difference between being sore and being injured?

Always wanted the one big long term deal and never got it.

looked at his numbers..better than i thought with i.p. and e.r.a. ...always seemed to get a lot of run support as i remember...prior was not healthy long enough to get an accurate gauge..not sure

There's no such thing as "run support". Each game is started by two pitchers. Conditions on that day are largely responsible for scoring or lack thereof. Each pitcher is trying to allow less runs than his opponent. That's all that matters. One man's "run support" is simply another man's ERA.

nah man...not true...you think maddux wins that aount of games if he is a cub for his whole career? how about all those loaded yankee/boston lineups...knowing you can give up 4-5 runs and still have a good chance at winning while the opposing pitcher knows it is over if he gives 4 is a big difference.

Always with the space orbiting barely there tangential logic...

It doesn't really work that way though. Players aren't robots and teams don't just spit out averages. The difference between "loaded Yankee/Boson team" and an average team during the space of a single game is inconsequential. Some guys have more guts than others. That's why guys like Javier Vazquez and Losing Pitcher John Danks are .500 pitchers even though they've played on good teams and all the peripherals suggest they should be better than they actually are.

Your making too much sense in this thread

And Yes, Peeps. Prior needed to feel perfect to pitch. Not good for a game like MLB. But a lot of people think it was all the injuries combined. I maintain he was completely back in 2005. He was 4-1 striking guys out with a era in the 2's when Hawpe hit the ball off his elbow. He ended up 11-7 that year but he was never the same pitcher.

Dolphin WOO WOO

Prior's run in the second half of 03 was one of the most dominant runs of pitching Ive ever seen. Pedro 2000 like.

Dots the low outside corner with a 94 mph fastball
12-6 Curve into a tea cup for strike two looking
95 high and juuuuust outside...swingin

Good morning, good afternoon, good night

And he got it back at the end of 04, start of 05

Hawpe is what ruined him.
