It's no Hub Arkush, that's for sure.

A cursory view at Yelp would indicate that Hub 51 is the worst kind of River North douchebag convention. I can only imagine.

I seem to agree, but how would you describe the typical river north dbag?

Been there for a work function; while I did enjoy the grub, the douchebaggery was out of control. An odd mix of fratboy posers post-Cubs game and 30s to 50s middle aged businessmen looking for trim; a less ironic Viagra Triangle. Just the sort of crowd that Bernsie would normally rail against. And dont get me started on Sub 51, their afterhours "club". The DJ looked like Jobo.

I've never heard so much wrong shit as I heard today during their baseball conversation. Does li'l danny really think there were less types of pitches in the 50s? They just had different names. A split-fingered fastball is just a forkball. Pitchers always threw a ton of stuff. It would be like saying golfers didn't use 5-irons back in the 1890s. They did. They just called the motherfucker a "mashie". Also, a bunch of dumb opinions on Tris Speaker, Ed Walsh, and Bob Gibson. I can imagine Matt Abbatacola III on Wi-Fi Radio in 2078 talking shit and not understanding how good Frank Thomas was. He only hit 29 homers. One guy had seventy and another had 66. Some guy named Jeromy Burnitz had 38. (Terry Boers VI: "Uh, eh, eh, Jeromy Burnitz, heh, heh, yeah, uh he was a thing.")

I noticed he said that the gyroball doesn't exist. It does exist, but Matsuzaka doesn't throw it.

That guy was full of useful information. Like pitchers didn't throw as hard back then.

Intersting how they were so impressed with Tris Speaker's numbers and in the same breath they're bragging about taking Home Run Baker out of the Hall of Fame. Baker's numbers, in his hey day, were eerily similiar to Speaker.

I think it was a caller who suggested the pitch thing. I dont think they HAD less pitches. But I do think they went FB/Change at a way higher percentage than now.

"A few did...not that many"

"Its all about money"

One thing I noticed about people, if they say "it's all about money" you arent convincing them otherwise

Matty seemed more impressed with Ed Walsh's 26-17 record than all the doubles and triples Speaker hit. (Semi-interesting aside: I met Tris Speaker's grandson (great grandson?) at a DePaul-Marquette basketball game after-party in an apartment above Hoghead McDunna's. I don't know why it came up in conversation but the guy acted as if I would have no idea who Speaker was. Obviously, he was talking to the wrong guy. I told him more about his relative than he ever knew.)

I think they actually threw more heavy breaking stuff, Bryan. The screwball is nearly extinct. That's what made Hector Santiago so special. if he thinks he can stay in the big leagues without it, I think he's got another thing coming. Anyway, I can remember seeing a picture of Carl Hubbell's arm in an old baseball book my dad had. The photo really stuck with me. That arm was nasty from throwing all those screwballs. It was all distended and really just totally fucked up. I looked for the pic just now on Google images but I couldn't find it.

Those old photos are illustrative of the different world we live in. The guys in their 30s look like 60 year olds. I can only imagine the women in their 30s must have been a mess. I now feel bad for my great great grandpa
