Humber yesterday reminded me of Jose Contreras when the Sox first got him (late '04, early '05). Working at a PAINFULLY pace and not throwing strikes. The ONE inning where he got the ball and threw it was the second; and it was a 1-2-3 inning. As soon as somebody got on base, he slowed down and couldn't throw a strike. He worked very quickly and efficiently in his perfect game, and against the Cubs and Rays. I hope Cooper has him pick up the pace for his next start. As good as this team has been playing, they aren't going anywhere if Humber and Floyd continue to pitch like jagoffs.

Frank, you're right on target. I have no confidence in Gavin Floyd, and Philip Humber hasn't been the same since he threw his perfect game in Seattle. That seems like a long time ago in a galaxy far, far away.

That 1st inning, even though he gave up just 1 run, was a bad omen of what was to come. Humber threw a lot of pitches. Not good.

Quintana's start tonight is one to keep an eye on. With Humber struggling since his perfecto and Floyd having troubles, should the team shut Sale down in August/September when his innings pitched reach the level they have set for him (about 150) Quintana would seem likely to be the guy to not only finish the season in the rotation, but pitch into the postseason perhaps, if they get there. Thats if he's not needed in the rotation sooner because of an injury (Peavy). Quintana has done a nice job so far and there is no reason to think he should struggle too much VS a Toronto offense that is less than stellar.

Bruce Levine said that was what the Sox were targeting in spring training, but whether they stick to that (as the Nationals say they will with Strasburg) or not is the question. Will they shut him down if they are battling for a division title? He has never pitched the number of innings he will be asked to throw, even if he only goes 150. Last season he threw just 71 and he's at 66 2/3 this season already. Obviously he's in a very different role as a starter. But at the pace he's on, they may shut him down before the end of August. He never threw anywhere near the innings in college he will be throwing this season either and taking a chance on his career in the long-term, just to have a better chance at the division would be short sighted.

Neither have I. To my knowledge, Chris Sale is scheduled to start Saturday afternoon when the Astros visit the Southside.

I get where you might not like the idea of the Sox shutting Sale down. But here is a guy who has never thrown 100 innings in a season and he's already at 66 2/3. At his current rate he will hit 153 1/3 innings after completing his 23rd start, which should be in the middle of August. Could they continue to trot him out after that? Sure. But limiting his innings this season would make a lot of sense. To mortgage the future of a guy that is truely exceptional would be crazy. It's a bit curious that the only guy with more innings than Sale, is Jake Peavy. The guy who has spent over a month each of the past 5 seasons on the DL, leads the team in innings pitched. But in Peavy's case, after this season "he gone", so his long term future probably doesn't concern them very much. Sale is a very different story.

They may be pitching real well for the White Sox right now, but Chris Sale & Jake Peavy both scare the snot out of me. For all I know, one may be Blue Cross and the other may be Blue Shield as the season progresses. If either one of these guys go down, especially as long as Gavin Floyd & Phil Humber are bad at baseball, these Sox could be in big trouble.

In 2010 Sale threw 103 innings in college, 10.1 in the minors and 23.1 in the pros. That's a season total of 136.2innings.

Thats why I said earlier that I see this start by Quintana as one to watch closely. He may well end up being a key factor in any Sox chances for a Divisional crown. I don't see the Sox or anyone from the Central winning a wildcard berth. To win the division I believe guys like Quintana will need to step up and contribute significantly. So far he's done a good job.

Well, for those with short memories, the last time Jose Quintana started a game, Ken Harrelson went all ballistic...

Yeah and he was pitching a good game. Too bad the ump didn't give him a warning rather than throwing him out after he threw the pitch behind the batter. Hopefully he won't have to protect A.J or anyone else again tonight and can just worry about getting outs.

Yes, SHARK, but it wasn't because Quintana was pitching poorly. He has looked pretty good this year. I saw him pitch against Cleveland, and other than their 1-2 hitters, he was getting people out.
