It was a hypothetical about someone quitting smoking as soon as high school is over. You responded:

Let's say for the sake of argument that bath salts don't make you eat people's faces. I wish you could understand what I'm going for here.

You still don't understand what I'm disagreeing with? Let me recap this.

You - I can make a strong case you should let your kid smoke at age 14 instead of play football.
You - As long as they stop at 18
Me - That only works in hypothetical, not in reality. No case in reality can be made.
You - Of course there is
Me - No, your kid might get addicted, no way of knowing if he can quit
You - Why do you think it's impossible to quit smoking?

And at that point you started just making stuff up so it was pretty much over. I hope you realize giving your kids cigarettes instead of a football at 14 is the wrong choice.

Bold is important. That is, unless you are saying that it's impossible to quit smoking at 18.

Good recap though. That's how I saw it too.

Also, please note your use of "No case". That is what got the response of "Of course there is" because it is in fact possible "in reality" to quit smoking at any time.

What don't you understand Rick? Here's the basic question you were asking.

Would you rather tell your kid he can play football from 14-18 but then has to stop or tell him he can smoke for those four years but then has to stop?

There's no case in reality for you to say smoking. That would would be a terrible answer. That's why I think there's no case for it.

My whole question hinged on the fact that someone quit smoking at the same time they would have quit football.

It's cool though. You think the question was useless. Let me put it another way then.

Is smoking for 4 years more dangerous than playing high school football for four years? I think a strong case can be made that smoking is actually better for you.

Mac could have been more aggressive concerning BernSTINE misrepresenting the Haugh article, but he didn't.

It was interesting to hear the boys really walking on pins and needles when talking to BernSTINE today. It's like they knew they had to be careful lest BernSTINE blow a fuse and throw one of tantrums.

OK so we need to get a proper order for most dangerous things to do between 14-18. Assuming all stop at the age of 18.

-Smoke
-Drink
- Snort Cocaine
- McDonalds everyday
- Acid
- Football
- Girls soccer

Would you let your kid play russian roulette once, or play 4 years of high school football?

Conns, I get the feeling you think that football is not as dangerous as some say

There are hundreds of thousands of people who have played tackle football for varying points of time in this country. Most are not near death or have life long health problems because of it.

The same could be said for a lot of dangerous activities

I dont want to debate it. Just wanted to get your full opinion on it.

football...

I learned more and had a hell of a lot more fun playing baseball than I did from coaches yelling at me while playing football.

We live in a dangerous world. Pretty much everything our kids do exposes them to some level of danger. For instance, children spend way too much time on video games and watching television, which leads to a sedentary lifestyle. They eat fast food constantly, and in combination with a lack of exercise, they grow up overweight. This exposes them to chronic illnesses like high blood pressure, diabetes, and other heart ailments. We get in a car everyday in high traffic areas. We let them ride bikes and skateboards, play at parks, near water. We send large amount of young people off to fight in wars. We'll send many of our kids to college, and they'll binge drink, smoke, and probably try drugs. They'll also engage in risky sexual behavior.

The point- our lives are filled with risks. You should still try to protect your children, but let's not fool ourselves with the general level of dangers in every child's life. There is a balance to everything. I let my son play tackle football.

Good points.

The paradox of longer life spans. The risk factor of any activity increases in accordance with your general life expectancy. Things that might impact your health when you reach your 40's or 50's weren't that scary when you didn't figure on reaching 60 anyway.

But, is it really true that the most prominent factor in determining quality of life is the age you reach before you die? Western culture often seems to believe this. Many people might disagree.
