How about 5 pm on a weekday? Would that be an ideal time for viewership?

Kentucky Derby comes in way over the Stanley Cup.

The NHL owns New Years' Day though. Just ask Gary Bettman.

I like watching hockey but it has many issues.

Too many foreign players.
The line changes dont allow for your best players to always be playing.
For the casual viewer, it is hard to follow where the puck is.
The 2 intermissions kill all the momentum. When someone flips the channel it is hard to make them flip back.

A time when people are awake, and also not working. Maybe London can adjust their time zone.

The Cup Finals start at 5 pm in LA.

Wait. Something lasts two minutes once per year and has a huge betting investment, even with non fans, has better ratings than a 7 game series?

I'm stunned.

That was probably huge on the west coast.

Being from Indiana, I'm guessing you never leave your house...rednecks and whatnot.

I have an idea. Since

22 A Rerun Of "America's Funniest Home Videos" — ABC — 4.8 Million Viewers

I think you can find a way to combine it with hockey, right?

There were several RERUNS that are cable only shows (not to mention some NBA playoff games on ESPN and TNT) that had at least double the amount of viewers that hockey did. Don't expect me to believe that those games on NBC would have all of a sudden had 6 and 7 million viewers if the games started a couple of hours later.

37. A Rerun Of "Grimm" — NBC — 3.48 Million Viewers

I didnt even know they had a show called Grimm? And its on NBC, so maybe that is the reason why NBC has it on their Versus takeover thingy.

42. "American Ninja Warrior" — NBC — 5.79 Million Viewers

The fuck is this?

60. The 11:30 SportsCenter — ESPN — 3.20 Million Viewers

At 11:30 PM, more people watched sports highlights than the Stanley Cup final. On cable. At 11:30 PM.

Same response.

I have absolutely no betting interest in the NHL, but I also have no casual interest in horse racing at all.
Yet, when I bet on the big horse races because everyone else is betting too, you better believe I'm watching all 120 seconds of it if I can. That's my $2 running around in 6th place on that dirt.

Everybody realizes that 30 minute (or less) programs will automatically have a bump in viewership, right?

There could be a sporting event on that is 2.5 hours+ that I really want to watch, but if there is a new Modern Family that starts in the middle of the game, I'm flipping to Sofia Vergara during that 30 minutes then flipping back to catch the last hour of the game.
Most people do that I assume? Now, magnify that 10x for the Derby. You could be mowing the lawn, watching a game, taking a dump, whatever. You can stop and catch 2 minutes of the horse race that somebody talked you into betting on. The ratings go through the roof that way. It's the ADD of American viewership.

*disclaimer: in no way am I saying this is the reason for the NHL terrible ratings. Fire Bettman please. Mostly I'm discussing the realities of TV ratings here.

Have we pointed out where the NBA Conf finals are in these rankings?

50th for game 1 involving the team of the millennium.
53rd for game 2 out west.

Not exactly lighting it up.

They're not in order from highest to lowest which is what I thought at first as well.

It's just a random list.
