Everybody realizes that 30 minute (or less) programs will automatically have a bump in viewership, right?
There could be a sporting event on that is 2.5 hours+ that I really want to watch, but if there is a new Modern Family that starts in the middle of the game, I'm flipping to Sofia Vergara during that 30 minutes then flipping back to catch the last hour of the game.
Most people do that I assume? Now, magnify that 10x for the Derby. You could be mowing the lawn, watching a game, taking a dump, whatever. You can stop and catch 2 minutes of the horse race that somebody talked you into betting on. The ratings go through the roof that way. It's the ADD of American viewership.
*disclaimer: in no way am I saying this is the reason for the NHL terrible ratings. Fire Bettman please. Mostly I'm discussing the realities of TV ratings here.
Then why does the Super Bowl have the highest ratings every year?
