It depends on who's telling the story. Telander would have you think Hood was just being a straight up jerk but from my understanding, he had some pretty good reasons to be pissed off.

One story I've heard on-air about a month ago (can't remember who was telling it) was that they witnessed an interview Telander was doing and noticed Hood was just reading the paper the entire time. Seems kind of douchy of Hood to do. But upon further investigation, the host learned that Hood was "not allowed" to ask any questions and that this was pretty much how it always went.

I do recall an exchange from back in the day where Telander said something like "Well, I invited you to the game the other day and you weren't available" to which Hood replied "No. You told me I was coming to the game. I told you I was not." They obviously couldn't stand eachother, but Hood got the rap of being the bad team guy. I tend to be more on his side....

Of course he had good reason to be pissed. Hood had worked from assitant to having a full shift at night (at which he was excellent) and now had finally gotten a day show with top billing in the name. Management hired Telander out of nowhere, renamed it the Telander Show and expected Hood to handle all the heavy lifting of driving the show. Telander was unprepared for a daily radio show.

That said, this is the entertainment business. That position is guaranteed to no one and there are 100 guys who would give there left arm for the chance Hood was given. It was a raw deal and everyone knew it. Handle it like a professional and people will take notice. He did the exact opposite and has pretty much been blackballed from the Score, at least until Mitch is gone. Anyway, his anger should have been directed at management, not at Telander but he took it out hard on Telander.

I recall one very very bad segment, though it may have been a recurring bit, was a Blues band of some sort. Am I remembering this correctly? Telendar was actually singing and I believe a harmonica was involved at some point as well. Never tuned back in after that.

Tons of busting balls by Hood on that show, which I dont think Telander cried to anyone about, as he didnt need to, it just came off poorly.

And the ball busting was always about Telander living in Lake Forest and how tough it must have been or going to Northwestern.

Its the kind of ball busting you might do to a real FRIEND of yours, that you would not do to someone you just met, or in this case just started working with.

At the same time, Telander tried really hard to show his street cred on a daily basis, but growing up in Peoria, attending NU and living in Lake Forest is not really 'street'...while it was not the actual topic of the disagreements, it was always an underlying issue as Telander did live in NYC, for a sometime playing hoops on every court he could....but he did it so he could write about it......so it's not like he grew up in the projects and this was his escape or something like that.

What people do forget is that Doug Buffone was the 3rd man in the booth on that show!

Telander is a quintessential Baby Boomer. That fact is reflected in every column he writes. Forgetting about the professional situation and how Hood may have felt he was being mistreated by his bosses, I can see how a hard-shelled Generation-Xer like Jonathon would just be utterly annoyed by the likes of Telander.

Telander is boring, and he's not very likable, in my opinion. I don't remember that show much because I couldn't take him and quit listening. I've never read much of his columns unless I needed help sleeping.

but Jay's beef was with management, not Telander

Always been a huge Hood fan. I remember when he was new to the Score, and got his first gig late nights, he would just act on the air like it was me or you who got on radio. he was just a regular fan like all of us who listened to the score back then. Also, when off air, I remember I use to call in and ask something that I may have missed earlier, like an event date, or some kind of sports question. most of the times it was Hood who would pick up the phone and help you out and be cool about it. That's something a guy like Telander could never do because he thinks himself as 'too good' for the regular fan.

I liked Telander growing up and on the Sports Writers on TV show. I never really read his column but did enjoy his work whenever he was on tv. that's until he got the gig at the Score. Coming on tv once in a while was fine, because it was once in a while. But when you go on radio every day it really show's who you really are. And what it showed about Rick was that he was a pompous ass.

I do remember this one show, maybe it was like a week of shows, where he had guys from Peroia on from back in the day and talked about how nice everyone was down there and how he missed that in Chicago. IT WAS THE WHOLE WEEK! It was almost like he was having some mid life crisis on the air for the entire week. I remember then saying to myself if it's so good down there, leave and join some small paper in Peoria. Stop crapping on Chicago.

anyway i've moved away and I have no idea what Telander is doing nowadays. I am happy Hood as got a regular gig and his career is on the upswing. It's nice to hear when regular guys like Hood do well.

It was like a jug band thing. Doug on harmonica, Rick on guitar and singing and some intern playing spoons? They did it like once a week for a while but I don't remember how long.

This is as I remember it. Hood chose the route he did and I was disappointed. I really liked Hood's night shift work. Telander, Hood and Buffone had to work together to make that show successful and it was pretty clear Hood wasn't going to do that.

Telander also came off as an unprepared, name dropping, coolest guy in the room ass hat as well which didn't help.

B&B gave em the business pretty regularly about this. For the life of me I can't remember what Hood played or did if anything. It was the epitome of #FUNBAD.

This is more about that show in case it reminds someone of something about Hood. Telander had an on again off again segment where he would give away items from his garage. They played a garbage dump sound and I think a call in listener had a chance to win like a towel from the 1998 US Open, or Rose Bowl commemorative football or something. It made Telander look bad because he would tell a story about how he got it...how cool he was. Sometimes the items were crap too. Hood grated at some of this. It was pretty obvious. They didn't do it consistently. Nothing seemed consistent as I recall. It would be like starting WYC and then doing it two straight Thursdays, take one off, then do it the next, but not for two more weeks. That's how I remember it at least.

but the show didn't last very long before Telander up and quit. I bet they didn't make it nine months together.

I think this was aso the tim where the regular Score talent was feeling a little itchy as Mitch hired several newspaper guys for shifts and they feared for their jobs

Didn't you know Rick has always fancied himself a rocker? His longtime group was called Del Crustaceans.

You could feel the tension and hate from Hood to Telender. This show reminded me of all of my dates.

Golly gee, where to begin?

Hood got the early-pm slot. At which point, he became the "fill in, everywhere" guy. Whether by his doing, or management's I don't know. I personally suspect it was his doing... Either way, I think you're shitting on the evening listeners by not having your assigned guy in his assigned slot. They deserve update guys filling in for Hood... why? ... And how do you expect to firm up your ratings in that slot without your designated host? Consistency.

Awhile later, North split the "Wise Guys" team of himself and Buffone, and went to the morning slot. Actually, Buffone didn't want to be the "sports update guy" on the morning shift, as he was once the morning host with Van Lier, and besides, those are might damned early mornings... Which is how Fred stayed in the slot to work with Pappy.

So, now you had Buffone and pretty-much afternoon-only guy J Hood doing afternoon show. And the thing was pretty threadbare. Mully at this point was hired.

Code:
a. As a shore-up, so he and Buffone could run the afternoon, and Hood go back to evenings(?)
b. Mully might have been a backup position when they were negotiating with Telander. E.g., if Rick didn't sign, they'd sign Mully instead.
But then Mully showed up anyway. Was Telander dragging things out? (You'd have to ask someone with deeper insider knowledge.)
c. Remarkably, Hood stayed on. I wasn't quite sure why, but Buffone is not what you can a "driver," and Mully was getting used to being
on every day. E.g., not so screamy.
d. Telander shows up. A surprise to all, except those who can think their way out of a paper bag, the show's named for him. Why not?
They lost North from that slot, they were fighting MJH, and, honestly, name another columnist/talking head in Chicago sports. You
have Telander, and you have Mariotti. This guy's in SI, etc., blah-blah. You're building a franchise, you use his name.

Needless to say Hood was surprised and indignant. Telander didn't earn getting the show named for him! Telander's not really a radio guy! Yadda-yadda, and who cares, since that was Management's decision, anyway? They wanted a name to put on the marquee, and "Jay and Friends" wouldn't draw flies. (Nor 'Buffone and the Bombastic (Mully)')

So he began berating Telander on the air. And this is where I disagree with some of you: you don't torpedo a show; especially a show that you work on! Normally, you might expect any such backstabbing-ness to happen behind the scenes. But no, this was on-the air torpedo-ing. And it ended abruptly by Telander's leaving the show. Leaving what? A smoking crater. Man, THAT really improved the afternoon show's prospects!

So, Boers and Bernstein moved to afternoons to try to fix that. Mully (with Hanley) took 1/2 of the mid-day slot, with Murph taking the other 1/2.

Seems like they were overstaffed, eh? And who to thank for that?...

Now, before anyone gets me wrong, I do not consider Telander a radio genius-in-the-making whose time on the air was curtailed by Hood. Nor do I consider Telander to be a compelling host. Or even a good columnist. But he was marquee, and management thought they needed him or at least his name recognition to reverse damage done to the afternoon slot. Telander would have imploded ANYWAY. But even if not, you don't let the paying customer know that there are issues.
