Back to the Sox attendance thing:

Many of the "reasons" can be discredited, IMO,such as:

- Nothing else to do around the stadium except for tailgating: this is true of many stadiums. I can only speak personally of a few stadiums, but personal experience showed me that there is nothing around Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Detroit, or Atlanta either. I assume this true elsewhere also.

- More of a blue collar fan base than the other side of town: This would be hard to measure, but Pittsburgh, Detroit, and other teams have just as many if not more "blue collar" fans. There are also blue collar fans in other sports, why would this be an exclusive problem for one baseball team?

- The economic downturn has affected ticket sales: This is a national problem. This would not affect the Sox anymore than any other team.

The local media coverage of games been identical for many years now. WGN is not a reason for a lack of exposure for the Sox vs the Cubs, as has been used in the past. Both teams have games on 3 networks. The Cell may not be one baseball's premier venues, but it's not one of the bottom 1/3 or 1/10, so that shouldn't matter that much either.

The only legit reason that I can honestly come up with as to why the attendance is always lagging for the Sox, year after year:
There just aren't that many Sox fans out there in the world. Period. It's not that 50% of the people in the area aren't buying tickets, there just aren't enough people out there to buy the tickets. They buy them proportionately, that just happen to equate to 20k per game. Or less.

Stop making sense!!!
Even with the Cubs tanking a season to get one of the top draft picks, a "casual" baseball fan won't buy a Sox ticket.

The Sox had almost 3 million sold in 2006. They are now about about 2 million.

I think you are incorrect that it lags year after year. It has since then.

The Sox can stop spending money on surveys and all the other horseshit....MAYBE THESE DUMB ASSES OUGHT TO FIGURE OUT THAT CONSISTENT WINNING SELLS TICKETS. People are tired of the stale Kenny Williams WIN NOW approach. Why should anyone have any faith in this organization? 2005?
The last 3 seasons this SHITBUNCH has been under .500 vs. the American League and within their own Division. 1st place in June....Spank the Monkey!!!!

kenny is right to try to make a run now..when your division is weak you strike..best chance to win a ring is when the division is soft..look at the cardinals...friedman would have multiple titles if he had a payroll and was not in the toughest division in mlb...
as far as attendance? there are more cubs fans than sox fans..it really is that simple.

There is a difference of 1 million tickets sold from 2005 to now. Those people went somewhere or people started going to less games.

If there were simply just not that many White Sox fans how could they do 3 million all of a sudden?

Perhaps. However, there are people that drink and party at every game. I think its very safe to say there are at least double (possibly even triple or quadruple) the amount of people at Wrigley that the game is secondary to than at the Cell.

Look at how poor the numbers were early on and how they increased to the mid-upper 20K range and 30K from about June 1st onward.

They also led the AL in October Attendance than season :D :D

Don't all teams get a WS bump the following year?

What are the reasons then?
You're saying the common belief is indeed true: Sox fans choose not to buy tickets/attend games?
I'm saying that Sox fans probably buy them in about the same rate as other teams, there just aren't that many of them.

Cracker Preacher Osteen can fill The Cell. Concerts can fill The Cell. Somehow White Sox fans are allergic. If this town can't support 2 teams, maybe Reinsdorf ought to play the Las Vegas card...for real.

Isn't it the job of the White Sox management and marketing department to create new fans or interest the casual fan who wants a night out at a ballgame?
They can start by putting the hysterical TV announcer who broadcasts every game like it is the storming of the beach at Iwo Jima out to pasture.

The indictment of White Sox fans is they find any reason under the sun not to go to a game.

I guess I don't know what your point is. Sox attendance was really good in 2006, and in 2007 it went down as the team tanked. After that, the economy tanked and it's continued to decline.

Are you saying that the state of the economy isn't a factor? Attendance in all sports, besides the NFL, is dealing with issues resulting from the bad economic conditions. Obviously, the Sox aren't going to sell out every game because they never have but even when the Sox are good they sell 1 million less tickets than they did.

The Sox had less of a margin for economic downturn too because for many years the Cubs had more demand than availability. The Cubs are finding that out now with cheap tickets on stubhub unlike what you could find back in 2006 too. So, the Sox see a decline in attendance. The Cubs see a downturn in scalper prices.

Let me try again:
My point isn't that Sox fans choose to stay away from the stadium more than other fans. There just aren't that many Sox fans out there at all.
Small. Fan. Base.

Although, I'd love to hear how the economic downturn affected the Sox more than other baseball teams.

So then how did they sell significantly more tickets in 2006 and 2007?
spanky wrote:

I explained it. Lets say that for your average weekend game the Cubs have a demand of 50,000 people for a game. Some of them have to go away without getting in. They will buy tickets in advance too, which increases demand. It's just like the Bears. They probably could fill a 90,000 seat stadium with the demand. When the economy goes bad, some people decide to go less or not go but others jump in and take those seats. It still counts the same. I have no doubt if the Cubs or Bears played in a 1,000,000 seat stadium that attendance would have declined for both of them based on the economic crash. The White Sox have no such buffer. They rarely ever hit capacity so it's noticeable when less people are interested in going.

This exact same thing has happened at Purdue. Ohio State, Michigan, Penn State, Notre Dame and other schools saw little decrease in attendance but a noticeable decrease in demand.

I know this year is a bad year for the Cubs, but Cubs tickets have gotten cheaper since 2006 too on the secondary market.

The Sox are ahead of only Tampa, Oakland, and Cleveland in attendance this year.

All of the other teams are immune from what you are saying? 26 other teams have a "buffer" - but the Sox do not?
Or, looking at it another way - attendance is down for 10 teams this year, including the Sox. The other 20 teams have a buffer, but the Sox do not? However, some have increawed attendance - not just the Marlins, but that's obvious.

But I guess what you're saying is what I'm saying in a way - the Sox don't have that "buffer" - but not because the millions of fans are choosing not to buy the tickets, but because they have far, far less fans to begin with. They have a fan base that's probably on par with teams like?????

Oakland and Tampa.

Spanky somewhere back toward the beginning of this thread I posted a link to baseball reference.

There are currently 10 teams with attendance lower than last year.

I'm not talking about one season. I'm talking about the general trend of Sox attendance before, during, and after the economic collapse.

They are down about 1,800 a game this year. I would think that the Cubs series would help raise it but that may not help this year. I guess Sox fans haven't bought in. I predict that if the Sox are in first place in August that attendance catches up especially against other teams from the division.

Why should Sox Fans BUY in? 1st Place in the Mighty Central? In June? After the last 3 seasons?

Maybe Sox fans are WORN OUT over all of the BULLSHIT? This is the third largest market in the Country. Maybe the Sox act has grown wearisome? The 1ST PLACE team that has trouble winning a series? They had a 9 game winning streak and are now back to their usual DULL ways.
I think our fan base is for shit, but I think the team hardly inspires confidence. Figure a dull loss when Floyd and Humber start.

Bob I'm with you. Sox fans are whiny fucking babies.

Listening to the excuses is as tiresome as the debate about attendance itself.

If he can play the series without making a fool of himself out there then Rizz should be up after the series. Let him debut for the Cubs on the road in Arizona to avoid the circus that will be there if he debuts a series later at home vs the Mets.
