Now that I am on vacation I am going to finally play this more and get out of normal mode on my barb and I am also getting a PSU and graphics card upgrade so I can enjoy this (and any future games) on max settings.

Real Money Auction House is up and alive. I was in it for about 30 seconds before I felt kind of gross.

It will be a one way street for me...if I deem it even worth my time to try and sell items on there. Maybe to obtain funds for the SC2 and D3 expansions...

Based on how few good items I find...it doesn't seem too lucrative.

It's basically a remedy for players who simply don't have time to play and want to take the short road to decent items, but it's far from cheap. I think people are going to make some intense bank with this. Certain rares are already getting bids for $4-5, wouldn't shock me if a solid legendary could pull in $10-20

The fact is that while there are x number of worthwhile items in existence, those items are distributed evenly among the larger y amount of players.

Some people believe they will be making "thousands" of dollars, after Blizzard's cut and paypal fees. These people are certifiably retarded.

I've split 100 hours on a wizard and a barb, lvls 51/52 respectively. It's getting to the point where I'm going to have to totally change their layouts to maximize resistances. These champ packs are getting unbelievably powerful, to the point where it's ridiculous.

The forums there are a goddamn mess.

That being said, I am a total fucking moron. I've been playing this entire time with elective mode turned off. No wonder my DPS is stuck in the mud.

1.03 is being released today, so hopefully wizards aren't completely neutered. DH's are going to be crying up a storm, however - attack speed bonuses are being nerfed out the ass. Curious to see how they'll help the barb's, too.

The changes were noticeable. I had been hoarding gold in Hell in the royal crypt the day before with 120% gold find. There was a noticeable drop in gold since the patch.

Barb now 60, max damage with crit and buffs is around 40k. Respectable, but work to be done.

Inferno is fucking laughable sometimes. I ran into a vampiric molten arcane mortar rare and within seconds my enchantress agro'd in a reflects damage extra health jailer champ pack.

Needless to say despite having 6 nephalem stacks, I was fucked exquisitely up the ass and quit the game.

if a tree falls in the forest and nobody is there to hear it, does it scream "WHAT THE FUCK MAN!??!!?" in a secret tree language?

Taking it slowly. Just beat Maghda in Hell. I have an issue with death in the game so I have been building my barbarian as much as possible to make sure I dont get killed easily. So far so good. Also found that Bastion Keep battlements is a good place to build up gold.

Prepare for an uber post:

Dewskie Fixes Diablo 3

Don’t get me wrong, I love Diablo 3. So far I’ve maxed out (levelwise) a barb and a wizard and feel like I’ve got a pretty good grasp on not only the game itself but the Gold/Real Money Auction House (from hereafter referred to as the GAH or RMAH). There are a ton, a TON of people who are incredibly disgruntled with the game as it presently stands along with the numerous patches that have come out subsequently to adjust to the trends.

These are just basic suggestions that are going to sound fairly rudimentary since I’m not a developer, game designer or well-versed in financial terminology. Let’s start with the stuff that’s actually in the game:

STORYLINE

PROBLEM: The story is what it is - some like it, some love it, some hate it. D3’s team stands by it staunchly and is quite proud of how it turned out, but I’m not alone when I say I felt like it was not only mediocre but quite boring. The lore that surrounds D3 is pretty substantial and has potential to be seriously twisted, dark, but more to the point - entertaining and engaging. Clearly the devs wanted this initial D3 release to be something of a celebration of the franchise, but I think they underestimated how fresh Diablo II/LoD was in people’s minds. The intense lack of originality and new environments felt like a massive step backward, but after a decade of absence from the gaming community I could see where the creative team would feel like playing it safe with sort of a “reminder” saga. Unfortunately for them I think it left the vast fandom of people that stayed loyal to D2/Blizzard over the years feeling cheated.
SOLUTION: In the followup expansion(s) branch out and escape the formula. You’ve reminded the audience of the franchise staples and (seemingly) killed off two of the game’s keystone characters in Diablo & Cain. Start fresh! Enough with the Angels/Hell Lords. Provide shades of grey to these entities, let the stereotypes of fantasy and the series predecessors dissolve, and for the love of god get some better voice actors/writers. My theory is to conceptualize a group of (for lack of a better name) Titans. The Titans are huge (as in so tall that their upper halves are frozen from the atmosphere ) that are unleashed by a rebel angel to break mankind. Obviously the nephalem will be the only ones able to destroy these enormous and incredibly powerful entities. I also suggest a level that takes you inside of a Titan or in some kind of moving vessel. Get creative, for fuck’s sake. I came up with that shit half-asleep.

GEAR

PROBLEM: The best part of D3 is the new skill bar and simplified gamestyle. It’s streamlined, simple, and yet still allows for innumerable complexities based on how you like to play. However that doesn’t compensate for the fact that gear IS the game. There’s no bones about it, Diablo 3 is item porn for item porn addicts, but it’s losing it’s grip on sense. Gear is simply too powerful and your player has virtually no effect - whether you’re a barb or a witch doctor, take off your gear and you’re dead within seconds; normal or inferno. I’m like everybody else in that I love getting the gear and the endless hunt for it, but there’s no flexibility to how to play - you will get good gear or you will be left behind. By revoking skill point assignment you put the build of your character entirely in the gear. It works to a point, but the fact that it’s blatantly 1-dimensional kind of taints the experience.
SOLUTION: Allow players to assign skill points upon leveling again, and nerf ALL gear across the board drastically. I’ll elaborate more on this below since it kinda ties in with other gripes.

PATCHES

PROBLEM: The D3 team seems unsure of how to compromise or adapt player demands with the patches. The major issue is class balance. The first wall they ran into was Demon Hunter attack speed which exponentially magnified damage to unheard of levels. The blizz response was to nerf IAS (increase attack speed) buffs on all existing and forthcoming gear. This doesn’t sound that bad, but you have to pull back to see the real problem - the gamers are playing the game and pursuing every possible exploit. BlizzNorth in turn waits for these exploits to rise to the surface and as players dredge for countless hours for their gear to take advantage of the exploitation, the latest patch comes in and nullifies all their work and effort. What ends up happening is people either rage quit/get pissed off/find a new exploit/all of the above, and before long the cycle repeats itself. On and on and on.
SOLUTION: There is no solution, since it’s a catch 22. They would’ve done better just to have their shit together before the game’s release, but there’s only so much you can test. Basically the best way to handle this going forward is to at least confess that they fucked up and apologize each time they trot out a new set of scales, but that’s not going to happen.

AUCTION HOUSE

PROBLEM 1: Short-sighted UI/system. My friend Nick addressed basically this in a post on the official forums, which I’m pretty much going to steal. Item searches are limited to 3 affixes when rare items tend to have 5+ properties. Why not expand that completely? Pretty stupid if you ask me. The AH sorting is horrid. You are not allowed to sort by time remaining, which is apparently to deter “sniping” (ala eBay) or perhaps had something to do with their servers. Also because you’re sorting through millions of items, there’s no sense of user organization. In order to track an item they’re interested in, players have to bid or else remember the item’s name/page it was on. Fucking retarded - let me tag the item. Common sense, Blizzard.
SOLUTION: …fix the interface. Make it a fancy spreadsheet for all I care - if you want this thing to resemble a real life marketplace (oh yeah, it is one), then don’t half ass it. Handcuffing players to use the AH under such limitations not only keeps a TON of items from selling, it keeps the market cluttered as well as pissing off the gamers to no end. More on this later.

PROBLEM 2: The RMAH is doing exactly what I thought it would, and that’s devaluing gold and holding the best items hostage. I get it, I really do. A game this popular always was going to have the potential for a black market - that’s just how gaming works. WoW accounts were sold on eBay or other websites on the quiet, thus cutting Blizzard out of oodles of $$$$. A built in system to cut out the middlemen is a great idea to supersede the potential submarkets, however it’s thrown a wrench into things. The GAH was (and to a point still is) a fantastic application. For a long time gold had real value again and made farming incredibly lucrative for players of any level, but now two things have happened that are making the GAH more corrupt day by day: A) Bots farm gold by the billions, B) The RMAH sells gold…cheap. The bots were always going to happen because cheaters exist to cheat - it’s inevitable and requires cleverness on the devs to get around, but the RMAH is their own creation, and the price of gold is their choice. For just over two dollars you can buy $1,000,000 gold. The fact that items are already selling for the maximum allotment of $250 is ridiculous enough, but it shows that there are trust fund kids and gamers with copious amounts of extra income to fully invest thousands of dollars into maxing out their characters. A person that is willing to spend $250 on a video game item is more than willing to spend $10 and get what takes most players days or weeks to farm. Kripparian has a fantastic video that details what he calls The Gold Problem, and in a nutshell he summarizes that gold is going to endlessly inflate to the point where it’ll be pennies on the million and ultimately worthless. The only things sold in the GAH will be the dregs or C-level gear since players, now realizing they can actually turn a dollar, take their precious tier-1/2 gear and open their wallets. Ultimately there’s going to be a polarizing effect similar to any economy where there is simply no middle class - Gold Auction House has shit gear, Money Auction House has the good gear. Since you can only advance so far with mediocre gear, players will have no choice but to turn to spending MORE money just keep playing the fucking game they already paid for, as blizzard sits content in the knowledge that they’re making money either way - thus no solution is required.
SOLUTION: 1. Don’t Sell Gold in the RMAH, 2. Raise entry prices for items in the RMAH. Here’s my thinking - By not selling gold you immediately restore it’s value. It’s incredibly irresponsible that Blizzard allows gold to be a commodity for sale anyway, but Greed > Integrity. My second point is that you’ve got to alienate the number of people participating in the RMAH. It must be done. However because Blizzard views the RMAH as a legitimate cash cow, you can’t just outright blow it up, you’ve got step up the bar to a point where the average person wouldn’t be able to afford to participate. Raise the initial entry item price without exception to $50-100. This will scare away people who maybe could’ve afforded to participate before, but raise the stakes of the ones who can. Raise the max price cap to something like $10,000 and let these dumb rich fucks throw their money away. Blizzard makes 1% on all these items, so why the hell dick with these nickel-and-dime price tags? In my mind this cures most of the AH problems - gold regains value, and elite items are no longer restricted to the RMAH.

The following are simply things I'd like for blizzard to change in the future.

-Auto-skip. After the first playthrough with a new char, sure, but after that? Get real, blizzard. Everybody and their mom spams esc/enter, never once giving the slightest shit. I shouldn't have to wait for 90 seconds while some NPC rants about shit I've had to listen to 1000 times.

-The auction house data I'm sure is available internally at BlizzNorth. I want access. I want to see trends, what's selling, for how much, what items, what stats command the highest dollar, etc. The data exists and is sortable - allow user access. I'm tired of questioning whether an item is going to sell or not, or if what I currently have is actually dogshit.

-Speaking of which, allow me to cancel sales if there's no bids. I'm sick and fucking tired of having to wait 24+ hours for items that CLEARLY aren't going to sell just to get them back into my stash. If it's not going to sell...it's NOT going to sell. Stop making me wait if clearly there's no interest, god dammit.

-Remote/offline trades and full (view only) access to my heroes, stats, gear, auction house sales, acheivements, etc. Blizzard's homepage is a fucking joke. I shouldn't have to be logged into the game's UI to see this info which is clearly accessible otherwise.

-Sortable friends list and password encrypted groups/clans as well as a community chest.

Let me know what you guys think who play. I know this was a TL;DR glut of shit for sure, but I’d appreciate feedback.

As further evidence that the RMAH is full of idiots with money to waste, check this vid of Kripp selling the fucking Horadric Hamburger (a worthless novelty "legendary" item from WhimseyShire) for $250. He further implies that the RMAH requires no strategy - as you farm inferno and you find an item worth 1100-1600+, even if it's mostly shit, throw it up in the RMAH and it will sell. Simply because people are idiots with their money.

edit:

since I've posted this to my blog I've gotten feedback that there actually are some awesome sites that details things with the AH, the best of which is Diablo3Markets.incgamers.com. It's pretty fantastic, a great resource.

I'll respond to more when I have time, but simply put Diablo / dungeon-crawler ARPGs have always been about the items. D2 was even worse in that regard, since Uniques were the best by far. Each class had a required item build to make them 'top tier'.

At least in D3 you have choice between items.

D2 is still better, but D3 did some things right.

edit: I've read it all now. You're wrong on a lot of points - especially when it comes to the auction house points.

I did a followup post tonight since I got a lot of feedback on my mistakes:

I admit that I left a lot of holes in my previous post about Diablo 3. In my defense it was early in the wee hours of the morning, and I wanted to post it in a hurry. Here’s some blurbs that basically are corrections/retractions/clarifications on my last blog:

- Obviously the Real Money Auction House isn’t selling gold right now. The price of $2/million gold was speculative and has become something of an urban legend in the D3 community. However the basis for my contention is still correct - selling gold for cash is a horrible, horrible idea, unless…
- Another message I got mentioned that a popular suggestion is to have the RMAH only sell gold. Unfortunately blizzard’s dug themselves too deep with that one already and are going to sleep in the bed they’ve made. They could save themselves the trouble and simply not sell gold, but who knows.
- I derped when I referenced Blizzard North. Obviously they’re non-existent, but so many years of D2 have warped my brain. My mistake.
- Fast-skipping dialogue can be done with the space bar. Why didn’t I know that? I have the map auto-configged to space. So fuck you/I’m dumb.
- My buddy Nick ripped me a new asshole with some of his commentary, and despite the fact that I hate being wrong (though I often am, to my chagrin) he makes a good point:
The RMAH isn’t to blame for the item disparity, it’s the item drop rates. Here’s what he said verbatim:
Quote:
“…it’s because they broke the end-game drop ratio. Act 3 and 4 Inferno have had a “bug” stopping the drop of end-game items in end-game acts. Go on the AH right now and look for Lvl 63 items…you won’t find many, and you won’t find good ones (unless their up there listed for like a billion), instead there’s a glut of over priced Lvl 62 items in their place. There’s also a lot of other reasons, as in not enough gold sinks, or gem sinks for that matter…granted, 3rd party sellers could be having some effect on it too, but by and large, the inflation has been massive subsequent the last patch breaking/neutering the top 10% of the games best-in-slot influx.”

He also pointed out that the Demon Hunter remains the most powerful class in the game by far, even after the patch. I trust his judgment because he plays/scrutinizes games with the toxic proficiency of any hardcore floor trader on Wall Street, whereas I jerk off quietly with penny stocks.

- Apparently they’ve already claimed that auction cancelling is going to happen in a future patch. In the Ask Me Anything one of the D3 devs did say it’s going to be unveiled in one of these 1.03 patches, allegedly.
- I was referenced a ton, a TON of various articles and helpful websites (I’ll list some of them in the conclusion) about D3’s ins and outs. Personally I just kind of haunt the official message board, but as a forum veteran for many years I should’ve known better than to think the real information would be found on anything official.
- Obviously I’m not the only one who’s raised complaints about the game’s story, but story is always priority #880139256 in comparison to longevity. The lack of end-game is making a lot of people bail, and while I haven’t gotten to that point yet, it’s created a rather fascinating uprising of the gaming populace who are outspoken in their criticism. And unlike other communities, the players who have stepped out and vocalized their qualms have done so intelligently and with constructive criticism (rather than just Fagz lul1!). Apparently the official boards are heavily censored and “bluetext” of the D3 team isn’t exactly transparent w/ their populace.

So yeah, that’s pretty much that. The next time I do any sort of complaints/grievances I’ll be sure to double/triple check my sources and make sure I’m not saying things that are too remotely stupid. I swear, I’ve put in just about 200 hours into this game, so I know what I’m talking about, but there’s simply that level of absorption that some gamers have - I don’t have that. I can’t keep up with the insane details, but for the people that have kept and keep me in the know: thank you.

Here’s some minor gripes, thoughts, and junk about Diablo 3:

- I took a look around the GAH just to kinda scope things out, see how ridiculous it’s gotten. I honestly can’t believe the maximum buyout is $2 billion. I mean…god damn. I have around $300k and none of my shit is selling, none of it. I feel like part of the problem is that I’m selling lvl 60-62 items…there’s simply too much of it. I could make more money faster by farming nightmare and hell, honestly, since there’s still an influx of players who will pay out the ass to get those items which get them to 60 faster…eh, I dunno.
- I decided to tinker with a Demon Hunter just to see what all the fuss was about. It was fun, but…it wasn’t fun either. I love when I’m barb’d up and hurl myself into a fray, having to time skills and potions all while madly clicking. DH is sort of the same but it’s kite-kite-kite-kite. It was a pain in the ass enough to get the wizard to 60, so I might just have to hold off on leveling him up, especially if there’s a massive patch to castrate DH’s.
- A lot of people are quitting. I don’t find that surprising, but I think “quitting” is too harsh a word. My opinion is that players are simply stepping back. A lot of opinions from you guys as well as from around the web are singing the same tune about the game still being in beta. I don’t entirely agree/disagree, but there’s a lot of sense to it: never before, in my history, has there been a game where the players dread patches like this. The PVP patch is likely the Next Big Thing, but inevitably the gaming audience knows that in order for this game to have the same lifespan and longevity of D2 sweeping changes are going to come with each substantial patch to “correct” (re: constant nerf/buff) gear affixes and gear drops. Considering that gear IS the game, it’s simply getting too frustrating, so gamers are not going to invest their time until it settles in. Makes sense.

Anyways, thanks for reading, and keep the comments/criticisms coming.

Good stuff Dewskie. I agree that the drop rates in this game are ridiculous and need to be changed - or at least up the percentage that you get drops for your class. As a barbarian, beating champ packs to get a yellow item, only to have be a DH quiver is crap.

I was going to correct you on the space bar...but I thought I was reading / understanding you wrong about what you meant. I thought everyone knew about space-bar. It is universally used in every RPG to skip dialogue.

I just found a ilvl 63 spear in Act III that sold for 6.9M last night. They are still dropping, it was just toned down a little to make up for the increases in Act I and Act II. There is still a higher chance to get ilvl 62 and ilvl 63 items in Act 3 and Act 4 than there is in Act 1 or Act 2. This is fact.

The story is terrible. Very terrible. Diablo 2's wasn't much better. Think about the specific story told in Diablo 2, and not the lore surrounding it. Pretty bad, yes? This game just adds terrible voice acting and lame cutscenes...but Blizzard has NEVER been able to tell a good story. They make fantastic worlds and lore...and then bomb on storytelling. Even in Warcraft and Starcraft games.

The players that have truly quit (which is a far smaller number than players who have said they quit) will come back as soon as an expansion is announced, or 1.1 is released - whichever comes first. If you remember, vanilla Diablo 2 was not all roses either. This was before charms, runewords, jewels, two classes, Act 5, half the unique items, class specific items, monster types, item affixes, etc...

Emphasized the voice acting for accuracy. That and the cut scenes do indeed taint it quite a bit. I can't disagree with anything you said, really.

Also decided to go and get the stuff to build the staff of herding. There is some hilarity in killing unicorns and cuddly bears while the characters continue to talk about the horrors of the land.

The console versions are getting really good reviews! I'm gonna pick one up this week, not sure if I'll do PS3 or 360.

As a Diablo and Diablo II gamer (hundreds of hours) I can say that I love the D3 interface on the Xbox. Just perfect. SO much easier. No more of the goddamn clicked in slightly the wrong place so now my guy is flying in the wrong direction just long enough to get killed. I'm an item hunter and I could see myself really replaying this as much as I did D2.
I miss the Corpse Explosion of the Necro but I use the Witch Doctor and he's got some cool shit. Love me some flaming bats. Killer. I like how the spells damage based on your weapons, that's cool. The story is meh but that's ok. I don't care about the story. I like killing demons. And Nazis.

I'm sure the expansion will come out for consoles too. I'll be waiting.

In May 2012, I thought so also.

edit: Also, shift key would have been your friend in the first two games.

Used it. Dude I had that fucker down pat. I think I've still got a level 92 Necro somewhere in the Arreat Summit but this computer is getting worse and worse and it's just too hard to fuckin play it now. Shit I can barely browse on it without wanting to punch a baby.

Up until a few weeks ago, I still played D2.

I had a Bone Spear Necro. It was my PvP guy.

I had one of everything though... :(

I did nothing but play D2 and CS for a year or two there in my yut.

My build was Fire Golem, Corpse Explosion and Amplify Damage max out. Pretty much forgot about everything else. No stupid skeleton armies. None of that damn shit. Saved my skill points until I got golem and went from there. that bastard took a beating and I'd just sit back and Amplify, Bone Spirit, Corpse Explosion...

What class would you guys recommend for solo play? I started a Witch Doctor, but I didn't like how you can't really use weapons with that class, plus I looked at some forums and the WD is getting the worst reviews of all the classes so I switched to a barbarian. I always steer clear of the barbs and usually go for the ranged guys, but I figured I would mix it up a bit. I think I'm level 13 or 14 now.

Can you guys give me some tips on using the blacksmith? I can't figure out how to do that. Am I supposed to salvage stuff? How do I craft things? The game doesn't really explain anything in that regard.

I used witch doctor and you can use weapons. I use the right trigger as the weapon. Just don't equip aa skill and it will attack with a weapon.

Darkside, how are you doing in the game? I ask cause I either totally suck or am playing it wrong cause I keep dying. Like every 3 seconds kind of dying. Anytime there is more than a few enemies I die several times. I have a barbarian, think I'm level 14. Am I supposed to be using the blacksmith? Cause I don't know how. Also, there are merchants who sell different colored potions, what are they for? I only buy the health potions which I use up in 3 minutes.

This game needs a tutorial cause I can't figure it out. Champions series was much easier to play.

Also, I don't understand the character customization. When you move up a level you don't get any choices of how to build your character like in Champions which sucks. I was hoping for a character tree where you can assign points and build your character, that doesn't seem to be present here.

I beat normal, I'm onto nightmare. I think I died once during normal.
No character tree. You just unlock sklls, which you decide which ones to use, and runes which power up skills.
Don't bother with the blacksmith until you get to nightmare. You'll find better gear on rares and champions.
Are you playing on xbox? I'll do a run with you. We'll get you all set up. I'll walk you thru whatever you need to know.
