1. Like I said, it will effect local weeknights and weekends at the Score

2. Zimmerman has more leverage for guys like Larry and the weekend boys. My price or we'll just pump in the national show. Take it or leave it.

3. CBS execs might place friends or favorites in local affiliates for dayparts. Doesn't work here (See Salisbury). That doesn't mean they won't do it.

4. Mac won't be able to make fun of Phil Simms anymore. :(

What about Not Phil Simms? I miss him on the airwaves. I don't think he's called since MJH days. Is that already a CBS mandate?

Eaglo, it wasn't that long ago when The SCORE actually didn't air live, local sports talk on the weekends. About a year or two ago, there were times where you didn't hear Jason Goff, Matt Abbatacola, Ben Finfer, Joe Ostrowski, Connor McKnight, Mike Esposito or even John "Rock" Mamola (now on Tampa's Sports Animal) on Saturdays & Sundays on WSCR when there wasn't play-by-play of White Sox baseball, NIU football/basketball, DePaul basketball and even NFL via what's now called the Westwood One/Dial Global Radio Network.

There were times when The SCORE went national on weekend afternoons, as well as weekend overnights twice a week. Before Yahoo! took over Sporting News Radio earlier this year, The SCORE used to air nothing but SNR's "Sports Saturday/Sunday" direct from the radio network's Los Angeles studios for hours at a time, and not just during Bears' games either.

I didn't care for it either. Haven't stayed up late enough to listen to Yahoo! Sports Radio either since they replaced Sporting News Radio and relocated their studios from Los Angeles to Houston. It's supposed to follow the Brewers/White Sox game on The SCORE once Chris Rongey wraps up the Sox Radio Network postgame tomorrow night until 6a Saturday.

on air talent will be directed by much stricter corporate management to push CBS products. I cannot wait for the Dan McNeil interview of Kat Demings to talk about the season premiere of Two Broke Girls

We will also have CBS TV people pushed on us as the new experts. Get ready for Ditka to talk nonsense three times per week.

I'd rather hear an interview with Kat Dennings before the stricter guidelines if you know what I mean.

Right now Mac and Spiegs have a 4 hour show and B&B have a 5 hour show. CBS might order Zimmerman to cut an hour off each show and wedge a national show in between.

This is a huge venture for CBS. You have to believe that in an ideal world, for the CBS executives, they would rather have their national daypart shows succeed in big markets. Or else why do it? Now, it probably won't work in Chicago, but I think they would want to at least give it a try. If it fails, go back to local.

Why launch something like this if you don't have the big markets for your prime time shows? That doesn't make business sense. It's just cost effective if national shows could succeed in big markets. That's all that matters to CBS. The bottom line.

I've got a better idea, Beardown. BOTH "McNeil/Spiegel" & "Boers & Bernstein" should be 3 hours apiece. Mac & Spiegs would air from 9a-Noon, while Terry & Dan B. would start at 3p & end at 6p weekdays. If it were up to me, even though FOX Sports Radio is one of the radio distributors, I'd get "The Dan Patrick Show" back on The SCORE's airwaves at the time he used to be on at ESPN Radio. That would be Noon. The show would still be on tape delay, but it would still be relatively fresh instead of burying the show in the wee hours of the morning like it used to air when a lot of the games had actually been played by the time Patrick's show aired locally. It's very unlikely WSCR would do that, but it's something I'd consider.

Also, I know he's on Yahoo! Sports Radio nationally, but another CBS Sports guy has a daily sports talker weekdays 9a-Noon, as well as replayed Noon-3p on CBS Sports Network, DIRECTV 613. That CBS guy? Tim Brando.

Actually, Zimmerman now has leverage over day part guys as well.

Zim will be told by his bosses to use this leverage as they want to go national anyway.

Zim can threaten to cut the time of these shows for national shows. Less money. Or give them a low ball "take it or leave it" offer with the threat of making their slot into the national show if they walk.

Mully:

Hanley:

Spiegs:

Mac:

Boers:

Bernstein:

Zimmerman:

You make a good point. If one of these shows decided to walk away from an offer, it would put the producers out of work too. I think this fact would influence Mac's and Spieg's decision. I don't think Bernstein would give his producers a thought when he's deciding. Not sure about the morning show.

I'm just telling you how the evil corporate suits are thinking. National shows probably won't work, but I guarentee you CBS is gonna give it a try in Chicago. They could always go back to local if it fails.

Like I said, you don't launch something like this without trying to get the big city markets.

"Mike and Mike" works in Chicago so it's not impossible.

I think Bernstein likes his producers enough to consider that into the equation. I don't think it would put Goff out of work, but I'm sure he wouldn't care too much for all this.

He likes them so long as their interests don't conflict with his interests. It's business. Not personal.

It was some silliness posted yesterday that got me surfing around to what stations CBS Radio owns. WJZ-AM in Baltimore might change their name but having read the story I doubt that CBS will look to disrupt what is already a success in its major markets. More along the lines of mid-market and small market stations getting the opportunity to piggyback on the larger markets. So B&B may be heard more clearly in Mattoon or Elkhart.

What I see more clearly is the opportunity for CBS to produce and package their own content to be distributed through their network. The expert analysts, the guests, the cross-promotional ties, they will be funneled down to the outlets. So instead of Dan Bernstein quoting NBC or getting guests from anywhere but ESPN, it will be expected to pass along the news and infotainment that CBS clears.

All of this is true, but they still are launching national radio shows. They would want those shows in big markets if they could succeed. They know it's not gonna work in all big cities but they will try to shove them in and see what and where they work. A trial process. Of course they're gonna get the backwater towns. They know that. They want a bigger empire. If they could get one national show in 30 markets that's a cheaper overall cost than 30 local shows in 30 markets.
