This is half-true.

This is a profoundly retarded argument, no less so because it seems to be the basis for Dan and Terry's LBJ knob-slobbing. It's akin to saying Dan Marino is the greatest quarterback of all time because he would kick everyone's ass on that Jon Gruden Quarterback Camp show.

Remember when you got mad at SHARK for giving his opinion as fact? Didn't you just do that in telling us that they aren't implying it because in your opinion they aren't?

I get it, but I don't see how it's the same thing. SHARK was saying "ABC bosses want __x__" as if someone actually interviewed an ABC boss and got a sound quote from one. In that case, I'd see where there might be room for SHARK to infer something. But he made that up completely out of thin air.

In this case, B&B have simply listed Lebron's attributes and you're assuming that it somehow means they think he's the greatest of all time. I think you and others are jumping to conclusions.

You cant possibly believe this. You cant possibly believe that being a better passer than Magic, as good a scorer as Jordan and a better defender than Scottie doesnt suggest you are the GOAT

If i described that player to you independent of B and B and LeBron you'd think I was describing would be the best ever, wouldnt you?

just the fact that B&B want you to love the guy is reason enough to hate him.

Boers: "what more can he do?? He said the "Decision" was not a good idea. I mean WHAT MORE CAN HE DO??"

They aren't listing his attributes. They are saying he is the best all time at multiple things(halfcourt passing, defense), and comparable but not as good in scoring.

They describe Lebron as a perfect hybrid of Scottie, Magic, and Jordan. I don't think it's unfair to think they are describing the greatest of all time.

I'd definitely think he was top 3.

The thing about B&B (Bernstein especially) is that they rarely definitively call anybody the greatest of all time. They've said it about Gretzky and about Babe Ruth. Other than that, they haven't.

See you're just sticking to that belief.

Top 3? Are you kidding?

Score like Mike, Pass like Erv, Defend like Pip???

That might as well be the definition of the GOAT....and you know it.

They ought to just man up and say it: "Lebron James is the greatest basketball player ever." I'd have more respect for them if they just said it.

I've barely listened the past couple of months, so maybe things have changed, but like Kid said you guys are likely making shit up.

Even saying that LeBron has all these great skills (passes like Magic, defends like Pippen), and is the most gifted/talented player of all time, isn't the same as saying he's the best player of all time.

Jordan is because of his accomplishments. They're staggering. LeBron could match Jordan's accomplishments, but he has a long way to go. I think people get offended by even that suggestion that LeBron could, thus the rush to say Team Bernstein is saying he already has, when they haven't.

There's also another separate argument of LeBron compared to his current peers, and them saying he's the best now is certainly true. Trying to put Kobe Bryant on LeBron's (let alone Jordan's) level is ridiculous. And I think they have, and I won't dare say they don't still have awful NBA opinions. Their expert thinks Carmelo Anthony is a top-3 player, for instance. The stuff about not hating LeBron is also stupid, though I agree his performance is unassailable you can hate players for all sorts of reasons. It's sports.

And I wouldn't disagree with the idea that Bernstein has been a bit of a wank about this, like in a tweet like this: "James's embrace of Durant needs to be seen and remembered."

But, yeah, B&B aren't saying LeBron is better than Jordan, just that he's the best of this era, could surpass Jordan one day, and that's perfectly reasonable.

It's pretty clear you weren't listening.

They weren't saying he was like them. They were saying he was better than them at what defined them as greats. Also, the most talent and the most dominating.

How dare we think they might be saying he's the greatest ever? They are only describing the perfect player.

OK, maybe this board has to be avoided like B&B. Saying LeBron has the potential to be the best ever, or is even playing at the highest level ever, isn't saying he had a better career than Jordan.

And I don't see how me not listening invalidates my opinion, I know most here don't really actually listen either and just try and figure what they wanted to hear.

Who said Lebron had a better career? It's not even halfway over?

You couldn't accurately articulate what they were saying, even though we said what they were saying. That's why.

Big difference between "like them" and "better than them".

B&B like to talk a lot about how someone is "more talented," but without ever defining what they specifically mean by "talented." They also don't tackle the issue of consistency, or if said talent is always applied at its maximum - a player can be more talented, but also make more mistakes, lose focus, have more bad shooting nights, etc. They've said things like "Kobe can do everything Jordan could do," which is totally true, but ignores the fact that Jordan could do those things more consistently, and efficiently.

Edit: and "talent" also doesn't cover instincts and basketball IQ.

Some could argue at the time. Dominique Wilkins was more talented than Jordan lol

It's funny how the title changed the conversation. Miami was an inch from being bounced by Boston...in which case none of this discussion would be happening. (No disrepect meant to Lebron...it's just that his "GOAT"ness -- or goatness, for that matter, was hanging on whether he won a title.)

Despite the narrative that Bernstein likes to spin, isn't it possible to not like LeBron James, and also think he's a great player?

It seems to me that Bernstein believes that people hate James and don't understand how good he is because of the hate.

I don't know why we're debating semantics. This discussion is entirely missing the point, which is that everything Dan says about LeBron is transparent tard-baiting. Obviously I can't say this definitively, but I don't think that Dan has ever said the words "LeBron James is the greatest basketball player of all time." But he's spent years (with a brief interregnum post-"Decision," pre-Bulls-raping) obsessively lauding the man's attributes and accomplishments, and at this point it's blatantly obvious that the conclusion Dan wants us to draw is that he thinks LeBron is the best ever so we'll call in and he can yell at us that YES LEBRON IS THE BEST AT SCORING AND REBOUNDING AND PASSING AND DEFENSE but NO I NEVER SAID HE WAS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME.

The Heat peaked at the right time. Not sure thats a sustainable level for them.

I was thinking that if Ray Allen contributed anything in that Heat series, Boston wins in 6 games

I agree with this. In a similar conversation from a while back, Bernstein compared LeBron's extraordinary skills with those of Derrick Coleman. He was not, however, attempting to make a case for DC being the greatest of all time.
