If you go the actual course's website, sometimes they will offer specials or printable coupons. I played Odyssey on a Tuesday in May for $33.

I did that for Fox Run. I really only play Saturdays and Sundays, though.

One of my regular golf buddies just got some new fitted Ping irons and wedges. He gave me his "old" King Cobra set (3-PW, 50, 55).

What's the story with the Ryder Cup? Yesterday I saw signs up all over the place around Medinah Country Club for Ryder Cup parking, drop off, volunteering, groupies, etc. I go home and go online, only to find out that the actual tournament is in September. Are there preliminaries at Medinah all summer or something? I'll hang up and listen for my answer.

Very nice, Chus. That's a hell of a friend.

I can't find a fucking fairway to save my life. Took a 12 on a hole last Sunday. It was very comical. Career high. Got some new irons which I am hitting great on the par 3's and the 2 holes that I actually hit a fairway. The starter got us off of the course on 15 due to approaching thunder/lightning and I wanted to hug him.

Yes it is, I've done that deal this year.

Was it really, really dry (even on the greens) there today? I couldn't get a ball to stick on the greens to save my life on that course when I went.

i have been playibng more golf this year than i have in many - and my scores are starting to really improve. at my best 10-12 years ago i would shoot 42-45, and in recent years it has escalated to 50-55 simply due to lack of practice (2-3 rounds a season). this year i have probably 7 or 8 rounds under my belt, and am generally in the mid-upper 40's.

my clubs were custom-made back in 1990. they were Ping-Eye 2 knock-offs, and they have served me very well, but frankly the grooves are worn so bad badly that getting spin on the ball is out of the question. i hit the shit out of my irons, i only carry a driver and play 5-irons and up, and i have been told that the newer irons are so much more forgiving that i could really benefit from the technology over the last 20+ years. I have been to Dicks and a bunch of other places to price out a new set, but thats fucking absurd, i have been priced out of this game.

My friend suggested some knock-offs from an on-line golf club manufacturer. I have found several and have read some reviews of them on 3rd-party websites that seem generally positive. has anyone tried this method of buying clubs, or have recommendations of somewhere an average joe can go and get an affordable (under $200) set of irons either new or lightly used?

Go to Golfsmith, and hit the demo clubs. There is usually some sort of sale and/or used club trade in. They have gently used clubs, as well. You could try to buy clubs during winter. Deals can be had at that time of year.

I just bought a set of irons from giga golf. Yea I know I thought the same thing, but I gotta say I love them. Best Ive hit my irons in years. I did the e-fit customizing. $ 107 for 5-PW. Look sweet and have a great feel to them. I'm basically a hack so I wasn't gonna plunk down big money.

Thanks for the good feedback. That Giga-Golf site is pretty amazing, and the prices are phenomenal. Golfsmith is great too, but even reduced, the iron sets are more than i am currently willing to part with.

Actually Spanky course was watered very nice. Play where I do it was hard as a rock
Greens were very smooth and medium to fast depending on which ones were in the shade.

Go to Golfsmith, and hit clubs to see which ones you like. Then go to www.rockbottomgolf.com to make purchases.

Last night was everything I hate about golf league, rolled into one package...and then some...

Usual shit with taking too long to play, having a d'bag in the other cart, and just not having any fun...but when an insect bites you on your lip halfway through your round and it instantly swells up to three times the normal size...yeah, fuck that...

Shot a 54 last night...thinking my handicap will go up a bit after this week.

Long rounds are the reason I will not play in league, and a big reason why I don't enjoy playing as much anymore in general.

Then make sure you never play at Villa Olivia in Bartlett.

Yes, I guess it is pretty common knowledge, but over the years there is a direct correlation to greens fees
and pace of play. This isn't a steadfast rule of course as there are plenty of business meetings and such
going on at the nicer clubs but at least some know to let you go through if they are slow. About a month
ago myself and 2 buddies played the front in 90 minutes and got to the back nine where a league was
finishing up and the back nine was 3 hours.

And when did all of the Rangers turn into giant assbags? They run up and yell at you right away if you happen to leave a cart near the green or tee, but they refuse to tell a group to pick up their ball and move to the next tee if they are moving slow. A few weeks ago, we were on the 14th green tee going into the 4th hour of play. The second group in front of us was holding everybody up. They were at least a hole and a half behind where they should have been. The ranger drove up and asked us how things were, so I said the pace was terrible and pointed out the group that was slow, asking him to move them along. He goes, "Well, its Saturday. Everbody golfs on the weekends and we can't piss anybody off." I said, "you are pissing people off. Every group behind those clowns is having to deal with a 5 hour round. Why can't the slow group be moved." "Well, I'll go talk to them again..."

Seriously dude. You get to golf for free for riding around in a cart for a few hours every weekend. Move the slow people along.

They are either searching for golf balls or taking a nap in the woods. It is a pretty sweet gig.
