However, please note his career average when making this statement. :?

His career slugging average and his career on-base average are better than most guys who ever played the game.

So you disagree with hatchetman's opinion then?

Would you have done that the day after Kenny signed him? You know, before he saw a pitch in a Sox uniform?

Dunn was one of the most consistent hitters ever. Can't see how you could criticize the move strongly. Kenny has done a lot dumber things.
You took that wrong. Not criticizing the signing at all. It was a good signing at the time, IMO. But Dunn hasn't delivered in the least.

If you wouldn't have made the trade (any trade) the day after Kenny signed him, but now you would - how can he be "back" to what he used to be at that point? It was just over a year ago?
I've changed, he hasn't.

Using your own logic, you can't celebrate if the Cubs win the World Series then. After all, congrats on one good season. Now how about the previous 105+ years?
What about the bold part there, spany?

Funny. I thought the season was still going..............

.......going downhill for him. He's at .212 right now, career avg is currently at .242, was at about .260 before the crash/burn last year and this year. On pace for more K's than he had last year (amazingly) and his OBP is careening back toward sub-300.

His batting average, and really all batting averages dont really mean much.

I mean, why dont you just cite how many GW RBI's he has too?

His OBP is .353, nowhere near .300

He's a power hitter who is killing it.

spanky wrote:
Not back. He had 2 decent-to-good months, now heading toward following that with a terrible one. He had 6+ miserable months last year. By definition, he isn't even close to being "back". Not even close.

I wont shut the door on the entire season though, leaving open the possibility of having a miraculous 3+ month run to finish the season and get "close to back".

No he had two amazing months and the numbers that matter (Hint: Homeruns, OPS) are right in line with his career averages

2012: .353/.514/.867 on pace for 50 homeruns

162 Game average: .373/.503/.876 with 38 homeruns

Back. Case closed.

spany's assertion seems to be semantical and obtuse, but that's been well covered here.

It's absolutely ridiculous to assert that a guy on pace for 50 bombs, after a dreadful season hasn't rebounded. In fact, I think most fans would have been happy with 80% of his career numbers after last year's shitshow.

I'm starting to think strikeouts are underrated. As an offensive stat.

    No GIDP
    Makes the shift look foolish
    No injuries on the basepaths

:drunken:

But when he walks he clogs the bases. That's why the Sox can't score. The bases are always clogged.

That's a big part of the problem with the White Sox batting Kevin Youkilis 2nd in the first 2 games of this series, and why I don't see Youkilis staying in the #2 spot in RV's batting order long term. As a #3 today, Youkilis has been more productive with 2 big hits to this point, including the one that led to back-to-back homers from Adam Dunn & Alex Rios.

Using "Dunnonomics", he is back. Again.

One swing after 40 really bad AB's means he's "back" from his two week slump, right? Of course not, short term results don't erase long-term results.

Not back.

Let's hope Dunn has regained his power stroke. He & Paul Konerko among the White Sox that have been slumping lately.

No really, feel free to look at his entire body of work this year. It's easy to do.

His power numbers are up, true. That's clearly better than what he did last year. The rest of his numbers are still down from his career averages. Some are WAY down. He's on pace to set the all-time strikeout record..........All. Time. Again. Spin it all you want, that's a huge negative.
His average is less than .210. So if he isn't driving everyone in with a HR, he's got, what - a 15% chance or less of moving people along and being productive during an at bat? And that from the guy hitting 3rd in the order for most of that time? Is that really what he did in Cinncy and DC? Of course not. Then he's not 'back'. I mean, everyone understands what the word 'back' means in this instance, right?

Maybe the title of the thread should read "Parts of Dunn's offensive game are back!". That'd be more accurate. I'd agree with that. But to say 'back" as an all-encompassing term continues to be comically inaccurate as he keeps swinging and missing.

Then quit using BA if you want to call out people for citing "parts" of his game.

This is a 9 out of 10 on the Elmhurst Steve unintentional comedy scale.

What? Is BA not part of the total Dunn package?

Good idea. Let me not only use the "positive" stats in his case, but also completely ignore the others. Seems like a good way to form an opinion.

He just got another hit. Give him player of the month for June.

Then you don't understand the meaning of the scale. Not surprisingly.

The guy who is ONLY posting about Dunn's batting average says "feel free to use his entire body of work, its easy to do."

Maybe you don't understand the meaning of OPS, OB%, Runs, RBIs, Homeruns. And you must certainly not understand their meaning in terms of getting them from the middle of the order.

In what way is citing OPS+ ignoring anything?

BA isn't a good measure. Period.

If there were a theoretical player who had a career batting average of .000 but he had 6000 plate appearances and 3500 walks, would he be a good player or a bum?
