I'm not usually one to question an athlete's injury but I think Purdue used that injury as an excuse for his poor play. I have no facts to support that, it's just a feeling or opinion I have. The things he did wrong in a few of those games weren't about an injury they were stupid mistakes or decisions.

I think he had a chance to be good but that rookie year screwed him up. I don't think he'll ever be good again.

Spaulding, IIRC Orton had something like 5 Int's to 30 TD's before the injury. He played in a passing heavy offense without any future pros (at least anyone who stuck) catching those passes. I was a believer in the guy coming out of school and I still am today.

My memory is a bit fuzzy but I can remember at least 2 games he lost for Purdue. I know one was Wisconsin. With about 2:30 left he fumbled going for a first down. I can’t remember if he had another down to work with and it was a fumble by him. I don’t think anybody hit him he just dropped it.
I can't remember if the other one. I don't think he ever made really good decisions as a quaterback. A lot of those game he won at Purdue had more to do with the defense.

I personally loved the game he got his bell rung in his home state in 2002 at Iowa. That was my personal favorite Kyle Orton memory.

Kyle Orton's fumble against Wisconsin was probably the worst feeling I have ever had at a sporting event. He was hit but he should have held onto the ball. It was especially bad since Purdue was currently 5th in the country and had come off a blowout of Notre Dame at Notre Dame. If he gets down on the ground, Purdue wins, is 6-0 and who knows what would have happened.

Instead, they lose by 3, Kyle Orton never looked the same. I don't know if it was confidence or injury or whatever but the team went downhill quick. They went on to lose the next 4 games, all by 3 points or less. My memory is fuzzy also but I think the game Spaulding refers to is at Northwestern. There is no way they should have lost that game.

I still don't know how to judge Orton based off of that season. It seemed as if we had taken the next step. Then it went downhill very fast and Purdue still hasn't fully recovered from it. This year will show if the rebuilding from that is complete.

Spaulding is right that our defense was very good at that point but for a college QB, Orton was playing as well as any Purdue QB. Then something happened at the end of the game. A few games later he was benched for the backup at Northwestern.

I'm interested to know if Orton and Griese are worthy of the spots they occupy. I still believe that Kyle Orton can be a very effective QB and I just wish I knew what went wrong his senior year.

As you can tell, I have some unresolved issues about that season.

I was at the game too. It was like something happened or changed and he never recovered. In all the games after that he never looked right. I guess I don't trust him anymore and that's why I don't think he'll be a very good QB.

Matt,
This may shock you, but I'm actually a Boilermaker fan also.

Agreed. But like, substitute Cubs for Sox.

The real bullshit thing about both the Cubs and the Sox being where they are today is that the Bears will be LUCKY to be 9-7. Unless they bring back Rick Mirer but you know who gets everything they want?

I'd be willing to give up another first round pick for Rick Mirer!

Since we are there i am curious to see how the defence will play without Ron Rivera leading them and after being humiliated by the Colts.

I think Rivera was nothing more than a glorified LB Coach, doing whatever Lovie Smith told him to do.

....and the last time I checked, the defense only gave up ONE passing TD to 'the great' Peyton Manning, and that was due to a rookie mistake.

The troubling thing was Lovie was SO stubborn and refused to have a LB cover the running backs coming out of the backfield.

So then do you think that the new guy (sorry don't remeber his name) will get to be the defensive coach not just the puppet of Lovie?

And i was not talking so much about the pass defense but the run defense. That's where they got burned.
