1. I don't use any BBQ seasoning. Bacon/Italian Sausage is plenty of salt for me.
2. I've mixed chopped/diced shallots in with the Italian Sausage before.
3. My BBQ sauce of choice (for inside the sausage roll) is Captain Curt's Apple/Cinnamon.
4. Instead of BBQ sauce on the outside, try coating with brown sugar (liberally) and basting every 20 - 30 minutes with honey. Don't skimp on either.
5. If you don't have a smoker, your grill is just fine.
6. Try some maple syrup for dipping sauce instead of bbq sauce.
If you have leftovers (HA!) try with an english muffin or bagel with some scrambled egg.
