HOWEVER, all the AJ drama bullshit really didn't have any use in that match .... that's what pisses me off. What pivotal point in the match's storytelling required ANY of the past few weeks' AJ nonsense?

Exactly. And the thing is, her not getting significantly involved is in some ways worse since she was so much of the focus during the course of the match and there wasn't any storyline development at all as a result. I mean the stipulation literally announced today was more significant to the ending than she was. This match was good but couldn't sniff Over the Limit thanks in large part to the peripheral drama.
