Doesn't Seinfeld have to win because of Seinfeld?

The best comedians don't have to swear in their routines. So I guess I vote for Bill Cosby.

Pryor and Carlin didn't have to either. They just chose to swear. They were just as funny when they did network TV and couldn't curse. They also, unlike many comedians today, never used profanity as a punchline.

Carlin's the best of all time, easily. Pryor was a great writer and his stand up was brilliant, but he didn't have the same devotion to the craft that Carlin did.

His final couple shows before he died were probably some of the most grim stuff I've ever seen, and it was kind of sad to see him shuffling around the stage without that energy he had just years before. Regardless, his 90's routines are the stuff of legend.

He was devoted to drugs and women.

I often wonder though, if Richard Pryor's dysfunction enhanced his work as a comedian. What I mean is, if he were actually sober during his prime in the 70s, would he have been as funny? He didn't really do any standup after he cleaned up and was diagnosed with MS, so I guess we'll never know.

Carlin was great pre 2000. I saw him in about 8 years ago and was very excited to go. After he was done he said he was trying out new material for his HBO special and apoligized for the show sucking. Said if it were him he would want his $100/ticket back but then said 'fuck off' and laughed. Very sad.

I was kidding about Cosby of course. I hate comedians that use ethnic jokes and swearing. Oh I still laugh, but it just shows a lack of creativity.

Carlin post 1990-ish was automatic PTFB for me- all politics, no funny.

Pryor, like Robin Williams was funny as an addict, not so much since. He does have Blazing Saddles on his resume, so that is definitely a plus.

I loved the early Steven Wright- so smart! And Sam Kineson- WOW!

Pryor by a mile. Having listened / watched both when in their prime, Pryor made me laugh more often than Carlin and it its not even close.

This is kind of like a Beatles/rolling stones thing
excellent quality but short career (Pryor) vs. longevity but very good quality (Carlin)

While in the Beatles/Stones debate, I lean toward the Beatles, in this one, I'd lean toward Carlin

Most comedians have a short life of being at the top of their game. Eddie Murphy had an unprecedented run of great work for a few years in sketch, movie and stand up comedy

Done Cook was ok....he's just so hateable

Chapelle was great

Honestly even the joke ones people are listing are good. You have to be a real good stand up before you even get famous

Michael Richards is not very good

yeah Redd Foxx was awesome

and re: seinfeld, i saw him once about 5 years ago and it was just OK. about 1/3rd of the show was re-told bits from the show. i'm not sure as a standup guy he'd even make my top 10

I think people like Kevin James, Ray Romano and Jerry Seinfeld shouldn't be put down for taking their gig to TV and making a ton of dough.

If you discount comics who swear Cosby is definitely the king.

Cosby is in the discussion regardless of the criteria used.

I refuse to participate because I answered this question about 5 years ago. Nothing in the comedy world has changed that will alter my results then. I will say I didn't appreciate Carlin until my 20's.

Any list that doesn't include Don Rickles has no credibility.

Bill Cosby is great.

Robin Williams is great.

George Carlin was great.

Richard Pryor was great.

Dane Cook sucks.

Lewis Black sucks.

Sam Kinison sucked.

Beatles were great.

Stones suck.
