CBS Sports has announced that it will kick off its 2012 SEC on CBS season with Alabama at Arkansas on Saturday, Sept. 15 (3:30-7:00 PM, ET).

Veteran announcer Verne Lundquist and a dapper looking Gary Danielson, along with University of Michigan alum Tracy Wolfson, will call the action.

I like him! Verne Lundquist is quite the storyteller and it'll be good to hear him, Gary Danielson & Tracy Wolfson call SEC football on CBS Sports again real, real soon. Wish Mac & Spiegs would give Verne a call...

That's alright. SHARK isn't always online...

Verne Lundquist IS College Football. He doesn't look very healthy though.

Verne's not getting any younger. The same can be said for ESPN/ABC's Brent Musburger, too.

Yes but Verne appears to be 400 pounds.

YIKES! They don't do the booth shots with him & Gary Danielson on CBS Sports' College Football, let alone him & Bill Raftery courtside during the NCAA Basketball Tournament that much, but you might be onto something...

The only announcers better than Verne are Brent Musberger & Gus Johnson.

Gus Johnson has sucked ever since he became more concerned with being Gus Johnson than calling a decent game. He makes Sayers-like mistakes, doesn't understand game strategy (he once asked if a basketball team should foul with ten seconds left and the game tied), and he freaks out over inconsequential crap because it's now part of the brand ("OH BABY! MINNESOTA with the THREE to make this a FOUR SCORE GAME with ONE minute LEFT!")

Basically, he used a fortunate streak of close, exciting games to make his name. Compare with Joe Tessitore, who had a similar streak this year but is actually good at broadcasting.

Spot on. He's become a caricature.

He's also more unprepared than you would hope for the #1 Big Ten announcer. It really seemed like he prepared a page of notes for each team at the start of the season and then he reads off of it all season.

Yep. Missing players' names, not knowing the standings, all sorts of problems. Maybe he's stretched too thin but that's under his control.

Our boy Verne may have dropped the F-Bomb this weekend live on air:

I'd love it if Verne actually did drop an f-bomb but it sounded like bucket list to me.

Unfortunately, websense blocks all my Verne videos at work, so I haven't been able to take a look at it yet... I just didn't want SHARK to beat me to the scoop.

EDIT: I don't think it is bucket list.

Quote:
As long as the Masters is played, Nicklaus’ victory at age 46 will remain a major championship highlight. His putt at No. 17 will remain prominent in the archives, which means Lundquist’s call will forever be linked with one of the most memorable Sundays in golf history.

“That day with Jack winning at his advanced age,” Lundquist said, “is my all-time favorite day in sports.” That testimony comes from a man who has broadcast 20 different sports for network television for more than forty years, a career filled with memorable highlights.
