Last Kiss wasn't even the best song they did on that benefit album - check out "Soldier of Love."

Here's a "you're happy for me" story.

First time Nirvana's "smells like teen spirit" was played on MTV as a 'buzz' cut was 10/14/1991 - my 21st birthday. We saw it in the dorms while getting pre-lubricated for the bars. We couln't figure out who the band was and since it said "chaka" on Grohl's drum kit, we assumed that was the band name.
Three days later, on 10/17/1991, I saw Pearl Jam open up for RHCP at the Duke Ellington Ballroom (one of their first 50 shows). Fuck I wish I kept the ticket stub.
To say that my musical taste was shaped that week would be an understatement.
I was the Forrest Gump of grunge.

I'll give my top five:

5.) Wish List
4.) Nothingman
3.) State of Love and Trust
2.) Rearviewmirror
1.) Elderly Woman Behind A Counter In A Small Town

Honorable Mention to Glorified G (great message) and Baba O'Reilly (I know, not their song, but if you've been there live for it you'd know how much fun it is).

I always got a little creeped out when an ex-girlfriend of mine told people that was her favorite song. I'd always just ask her, "You DO know what that's about, right?" It just didn't seem right to make it one of your favorites, I mostly just get depressed listening to it.

I second that. Also, their cover of "Rockin in the Free world" is the balls.

This is true. But that might just be because Neil Young sucks so bad, any cover looks good by comparison

Moving can be tough but I never understood the strong desire or sadness caused in order to fit in. Be yourself, if others don't like you fuck em, you're better off alone than with a bunch of idiots. I had to switch the group I hung out with in high school because I did not like the philosophical direction of the group. For the most part high school girls are catty, backstabbing, skanks. It took me a good year or so to find a new group of friends but I was better off.

I find the "no idea what to do with ourselves" interesting and the exact problem. Why are people waiting around for others to make them happy or entertain them? Go do what you enjoy and don't depend on others. They will disappoint you.

Did you post a farewell message on the bathroom wall, and then proceed to return a week or so later?

No. One day I decided I wasn't going to sit at their lunch table anymore and that was the end of it. I never went back. Funny thing is I lost my best friend of about 5 years. She apologi at our 10 year reunion and carried the guilt around with her. I hadn't thought about it since hs and my life turned out better than I imagined beause of incident.

I was making a joke but you made the correct choice. I think everyone at some point has to decide if the current group of people they hang out with are the type of people they want to around and be like. It seems to happen more for girls than guys. It's a great feeling once you finally do it though.

I agree with that now and it took time and maturity for me to understand what that meant. However, growing up as a loner and having kids constantly make fun of who I was (when I really didn't know why), it wore on me after awhile. At that point, all I wanted was to go to school and have peace of mind. I didn't.

Where I grew up, if you were not a thug - if you were a quiet kid and you read books, you were labeled a fucking lame-ass. For a long time I watched my older brother fit in everywhere and have a million friends and he seemed like he was having the time of his life (while ridiculing me). All I wanted was a taste of whatever being "cool" was.

I am forever thankful that I don't look back on high school as the best time of my life. I wasn't a nerd but I also wasn't really popular either. It sucked at times, especially before high school, but I think it actually had a positive impact on my life.

If only you knew then that all you had to do was post with a bunch of white people on an internet message board, it would have saved you a lot of heartache. :D

In all seriousness, kids are stupid. I was in a similar situation to Spaulding, and I'm glad that I started hanging with a different group of friends.

Kid Cairo,
If I ever have to prove my non-rascistness, can I use you as a reference?

Kid you did what was right, didn't that give you any peace of mind? If everybody who was cool was a thug chances are hs was the best time of their life. That would make them a loser.

I had a core group of friends that were great. I also hung out occasionally with some of the more studious people and stoners. It never mattered to me what people thought and I never let other people control how I view myself.

No problem. Race is overrated in my opinion. I'd bang any woman: black, white, Hispanic, Asian, Hindu, Russian...even one of the green bitches from Star Trek.

funny cos the internet pretty much saved me. back in '92, one of the only friends i had (who later stabbed me in the back and became a sworn enemy for a while for stupid reasons) gave me my first modem, a 2400, for 20 bucks. i was a nobody in jr. high/high school most of the time. but on BBS's, it didn't matter what you looked like or who you were--you could be whoever you want, and I was so much more relaxed, and made a lot of friends. I felt more compelled to talking to people online than people in person. As I grew up, I became more tolerant of people, and online stuff became part of a backdrop for me. But I still look back fondly at the BBS Years for me--'92-'95 were awesome years, and historically I guess, also the most popular time for BBS's. After '95 BBS's died down because of the growth of the internet and the World Wide Web.

But as you can see, as this place is proof (which I consider a form of a BBS), you can make friends online and you're none the weirder. This place is so vintage!
