it's like dave mcginnis all over again! maybe when you called up the atlanta braves' phone # there was an extension for ryan dempster already and the deal was thusly broken.

But when trade leaked out in media Monday before #cubs informed him, Dempster was not happy. Felt blindsided, said a source.

You can't fault Ryan Dempster for using his 10-5 rights if he has. That is his perk being in the majors for so long, and with the Cubs for so long. Doesn't matter what he has said previously, maybe this isn't the best time personally/family wise for him to leave Chicago. Maybe he wants to stay here to put some good numbers on a bad team to try and get a better payday next season. Maybe he will ended getting moved, who knows.

I agree with Roger though. He seems like a total assbag off the field.

He needs to get over himself. This is the stupidest reason to delay the trade. Maybe he wasn't approached by Jed or Theo because they felt uncomfortable talking business to a grown man parading around in a Captain America suit. Just get over yourself and sign it if you are going to sign it.

You can't blame him for wanting to use his 10/5 rights to go to a favorable situation, but, when by all accounts, LA and Atlanta are on his list I think it's easy to fault him for blocking it, if he is, in this situation.

Especially if he is only holding it up because he is all butt hurt over finding out via rumor before his bosses informed him.

He has done a really good job on the field. I will give him that. His off the field stuff is probably amusing in small pieces but it sounds like he is always that guy and its not that funny when the team is god awful. He is also part of the old and bad Cub culture that the new regime is trying desperately to change.

He is the kind of player the CGS type Cub fans of the world love.

I care first and foremost about how the players perform on the field. Everything else is secondary. And Dempster performs way more often than not.

Thats fine. I like what he has done on the field as well. I'm just saying that the bad Cub fans will Santoify him.

This old cub 2: Captain Cub Ryan Dempster

For the record, I was actually being sarcastic about this whole Dempster situation. The guy has an ill daughter and has a unique profession that allows him to make a bunch of cash for a relatively short period of his life. The Cubs have paid him handsomely for his services, which haven't always been a ~2.20 ERA or whatever he's at right now. There were some pretty lean/meh years in there too.

If the Almighty Randall Delgado is on the table, I reckon the proper thing to do is say "daddy's gotta go to work for a few months" and get a nice laptop with Skype capabilities and in the immortal words of Larry the Cable Guy(tm) GIT-R-DONE!

The story seems to have shifted to Dempster being pissy and doing his closing-vs-the-mets pacing around the mound walk because, sniffle sniffle, THE NEW BOSS DIDN'T TALK TO HIM FIRST! HE WAS NAPPING! HE NEEDS HIS BEAUTY SLEEP TO REST UP FOR HIS HARRY CARAY IMPERSONATION ON OFF DAYS!

How many Cubs fans have you polled? I feel as if you might not know how the minority and majority concept works.

The majority of Cub fans on this board, for one.

Does anyone here agree with you in the slightest?

If he blocks this thing because his feelings were hurt for being blindsided then he is a HUGE douchebag. But I would expect he will get past it and agree to it today.

So if I agreed to work a partial year somewhere else in my job, even though I didn't have to - and gave a list of places I would transfer to - I am a D-bag if that new place suddenly says "we don't want you here for a partial year, we want you to stay for 2-3 years" and I balk at that?

He can't be faulted in any case. He is a 10-5 guy, and has full no trade. He can simply change his mind and that's good enough to nix a deal. Sure it might appear to be a shitty move, but he's earned his 10-5 rights and if and when he chooses to use that his 100% up to him.

Because baseball teams would never say one thing and then do another? I'm sure there has never been a case where a guy has been told he will be on a team, and then cut in spring training or DFA'ed. Its business, it happens. You deal with it and move on. So the Cubs need to do the same thing. Maybe something happened with Dempster's wife or kids that is better for them if they stay in Chicago so now he doesn't want to leave. He is at a point in his career where he can veto a trade.

If it was Konerko refusing a trade, I would feel the exact same way.

I dont believe that is whats happenning here. Dempster can be a free agent if he wants.

The "He is withholding approval because he was blindsided" headline is popping up around the internet now. Being all butt hurt privately over the blindsiding has to be better than being trashed publicly the next day for being all butt hurt over the blindsiding.

So he can't be pissed off because of that? If your boss came up to you tomorrow morning-- with no warning-- and said you need to move 300 miles away to keep your job, you wouldn't be pissed off? And that if you had something in your contract that said that you could veto any move over 100 miles if you wanted to stay at your current location without repercussions, you wouldn't exercise that clause? I say bullshit to that good sir.

Thats not what it sounds like in this case though. It sounds like they had a basic agreement with the Braves and they let him know and he was good with it. They then had to work out some final details before preparing the paperwork for him to sign and he probably said let me fill the fam in, you guys get the paperwork ready and we will reconvene later and get this done. During that time the Crane Kenney of the Braves leaked the story and Dempster got all pissed off about it.

I'm sorry, I didn't realize I was dealing with people in the Cubs front office who know for sure exactly how this all went down.

He has earned the right to accept or decline a trade. As a fan, I have the right to call him a D-bag for not getting the fuck off this roster and have the cubs hopefully get back a decent prospect.

I also have the right to call him the POS pitcher who pissed down his leg in game 1 of 2008 playoff's.

He has his rights...I have mine. If he stays with the cubs....it's likely to get a little ugly for him.

Maybe he should wear a long blonde wig to the park today.

That was hilarious. Groundbreaking comedy (in the middle of a losing streak that would continue, as the team sucked that year)

And yes, the Braves do indeed give up good talent...

Ryan Dempster has the right to say where, if anywhere, he will allow himself to be traded to.

Ryan Dempster has the right to subsequently change his mind, for whatever reason(s).

Ryan Dempster does not have the right to be sheltered from criticism.

All other arguments to the contrary are fallacious.
