My 6 year old has been playing my PS2 for the last year and I have been stockpiling games from GameStop during that time. But they are starting to cycle out of that series. It might be time to bite the bullet and upgrade, but to what, I do not know.
I have been out of touch with the new technology of the gaming world and am not familiar with some of the new features these systems offer. A couple of questions if I may:
Will the PS2 games play on the PS3?
Are there more than one type of PS3 game?
Can games now be downloaded to the system? If so, for both PS3 and Xbox?
How do you set it up for online gaming? Do I have to have another internet line for it?

I have been contemplating the Xbox system because my son fell in love with Halo when he played over at my brother's house. Are there any other recommended games that Xbox only carries?

What are your guys/gals thoughts on either system. Appreciate your serious replies.

I own both and if I had to give up one I would say I would keep the XBOX 360 over the PS3. The Xbox I believe is easier to use online and has Kinect. 2 features that could draw kids to playing the games quite a bit more and getting more use out of your system and thus more value for your dollar.

The PS3's haven't been backwards compatible for a while now...bought mine like 4 years ago or so and I'm pretty sure that's when they stopped making them that played PS2 games...

Not sure I understand the "more than one type of PS3 game" question...elaborate perhaps?

Yes, games can be downloaded for both. Full games can be purchased for both systems, while each allows installing purchased disc games to the hard drive, to differing degrees.

Think of the console going online like another computer in your house would. You don't need a seperate line. But don't try going online with anything less than DSL or Cable (I'd say cable, but that's personal preference).

Xbox is pretty light on exclusives...you said Halo, which really hits the big one. There's also Gears of War (wait, you said 6 year old)...nevermind...

man the video game industry is such a racket. I am going to have to recycle all of these games. It reminds me of when I sold back my Nintendo along with some 50 games to buy a new Sega system. I did that while I was in high school and made an executive decision because I knew what was cool. Boy were my parents pissed....but I digress.

I read the terminology of PS3 Slim and I didn't know that was another type of PS3.

The other thing is that I am so used to the PS controller and having to re-learn a new controller would blow. I get all messed up trying to play madden. When I see the x on the screen I press the X on the bottom thinking it is the PS "X" button.

Are you buying this more for the kid or for you?

That would impact my recommendation.

When you trade in those games be prepared to get about $1 tops per game. Since the games are so old you won't get much of anything back from gamestop or any other company. You're going to get crushed on it.

I would say more for him than me. I will never have the time to play on my own anymore. But I will from time to time, play with him.

Maybe I'll do better by bulking everything together and selling it on Ebay. Think that will be better than Gamestop?

I'd say get the 360 then.

Not a bad idea on the bundle. Put everything out there and see what you could get...do the same with Gamestop.

PS3 has a built in bluray player if that's a factor in your decision.

I have both systems. If I could only have one it would be the Ps3 because of the bluray player.

Gamewise, they are pretty even although the PS3 has better exclusives. I also think the 360 has longer load times. Controler wise, it depends what you are used to although I will say the 360 controller has a more sturdy feel and has a better feeling trigger button for shooting guns.

Online, I don't really use, but I would imagine 360 is much better for online since they have always been leading in that department. But, keep in mind online on 360 costs money whereas its free on PS3.

I kinda think the opposite, but of course I'm talking my book.

What exclusives does the 360 have besides Halo and Gears?

PS3 has Infamous, Uncharted, Ratchet&Clank.

I'm sure I'm missing a bunch.

PS3. I personally hate playstation but even I'll admit that the 360 is a bugged out pile of shit. The PSN is crappy but at least it's free. Plus blu-ray player FTW.
