Can Don Cooper work his magic on yet another rehab project? Does he have any magic pixie dust left over from his previous efforts on Bobby Jenks, Matt Thornton, Esteban Loaiza, and even Gavin Floyd to an extent?

the world may never know..... * crunch * </tootsierollowl>

White Sox acquired LHP Francisco Liriano from the Twins for INF Eduardo Escobar and LHP Pedro Hernandez.

Wow. I can't believe the Sox made a trade with the Twins. I like it.

3-10 with a 5+ ERA.

Bad.

At least that will teach kids to not want the ball after their first strike

Love it for the Sox. They weren't getting Greinke, and sure as hell weren't getting Felix Hernandez. When he's right, it's awesome. I have to give Kenny credit again. Especially with the Twins.

I LUV Kenny Williams. His team has a 2.5 game lead and he smells blood in the water. Youkilis, Myers and now Liriano. I read he was deep in talks with the Mariners for Ichiro. Maybe there's yet another trade on the horizon for the GM of the year.

They'd been better off with Dempster.

He was my fantasy baseball guy back in the day. I've watched him, from a distance, since. Say what you will about "LISTEN" Cooper, but I'll be interested to see if he has an impact. They weren't getting the stud pitchers, and gave up what they had to contend.

I'd still be unhappy with that package for Dempster.

Don Cooper will "fix" Liriano  . Liriano wouldn't have been necessary if Cooper prevented Floyd and Danks going down the shitter.

EDIT: I should add that you can't fix what's never been right. Liriano has had one good year. Yippee.

I would have rather seen then get Mahlom over Liriano.

His first year in the majors was 2005. Is seven years ago really back in the day?

Liriano had one really good year and one decent year. The rest of his career has been a lot of meh.

Ok thank God I'm not the only one that things this isn't a great or even halfway good trade. He's 3-10 with a plus 5 era. I'm not sure how this is going to benefit the Sox.

He was terrible last year and terrible this year. Not impressed. I guess hopefully he pulls a Youk and starts playing 100x better just by switching uniforms. That's really the only reason to be even marginally excited about this.

welp, i lost my big long post with my feelings on the matter.... basically, this guy is right there in don cooper's wheelhouse for the type of reclamation/rehab project that he's had a pretty good track record of success with during his storied tenure with <announcer's voice> YOUR CHICAGO WHITE SOXXXXX</announcer's voice>

this year>>
Francisco Liriano (2012): 22g 17gs 3w 10l 0sv 0bsv 1hld 0cg 0sho 100.0ip 89h 63r 59er 12hr 55bb 109k 5.31era 1.44whip .239baa
.
meh. not a bad H/IP ratio there (89/100) but the 55 walks coupled with the 12HRs in 100IP = welcome to a 5.31 ERA. he had a pretty good stretch from mid-may to mid-june i wanna say, but then his inconsistency is his #1 consistency..... while it's easy to look back to his 2006 season where he came up and stormed out of the bullpen to get 14 starts of 2.36/1.00 with !!!! K rates, i think the best-case-scenario with this guy comes from a couple'a years ago:

Francisco Liriano (2010): 31g 31gs 14w 10l 0sv 0bsv 0hld 0cg 0sho 191.2ip 184h 77r 77er 9hr 58bb 201k 3.62era 1.26whip .252baa

that's the kind of performance i'd love to see don cooper sprinkle some of dusty's magic pixie dust to get. ideally, seeing as last year he was something like 4.60/1.40 and in 08/09 he was basically 5.00/1.45 or thereabouts, methinks if he shows some promise/potential during the remainder of this season you should be able to ink him to a relatively cheap 2-4 year contract, which would be ideal. something tells me you can get this guy to fall SOMEWHERE in a 3.50-4.25/1.20-1.30 range, and if you do that you'll get a nice K rate with that to make him a really nice little 3/4 slot pitcher in your rotation going forward.

so yeah, my gut reaction is similar to the contreras trade, but this definitely isn't that one. i was a big fan of the contreras trade at the time because i saw esteban loaiza's mexican pitching record career year as just that, a career year, and being able to spin him for a guy with stuff like contreras who buckled under the pressure of having his WELCOME-TO-MLB inaugeral tour with YOUR 27 TIME WORLD CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEES (LED BY DEREK. SANDERSON. JETER. ) but came here and was basically just about the best pitcher in baseball from mid-05 to mid-06.... yeah. i doubt this trade will be as significant as that one, seeing sa that one required you giving up a pitcher who had theoretical value and taking on a rather sizable contract in terms of assuming risk, this one basically only really cost you a utility player and a goofy kid who shit the bed after getting the ball from his first MLB pitch and having his 2nd MLB pitch be a resounding stand up double. welcome to the show.

and yeah, my gut tells me that if the sox can teach this kid how to use a cutter and then get some sort of a sweetheart deal for the guy here in chicago you're going to likely end up with a pitcher closer to those 2010 3.62/1.24ish stats and therefore get a really shrewdly-good deal out of the whole works.

terry boers once said that someone, i think it was royko, told him that writing a column is basically flinging a bunch of shit on the wall and seeing what sticks. kenny has a similar mindset when executing these moves to upgrade the white sox, and while there have been spectacular successes in the past (contreras) and there have been spectacular failures too (manny ramirez) i still like this mentality of getting guys who have shown that they can do it at the big league level at some point in their career, well then shit, you know they have it IN them, it's only a matter of getting it OUT of them (again).... so hey, everyone raise your beer to kenny williams because i love this guy's mentality when he smells tiger blood in the water and goes "mmmm hey i know that smell, that's menstrual blood!" and goes out and gets players with legitimate upside for a song and a dance (youk, myers, and now liriano for a combined large value-size bag of potato chips and a liter of pepsi)

rock on k-dub! stay hollywood and keep those crank voicemails to ozzie comin more often than russell brand in a whorehouse! SHOMER SHABBOS! unlike walter sobchak, "hollywood" k-dubbs DOES indeed roll on saturdays!

personally, what *I'M* really wondering is what does the 2012 SCORE SEARCH!!! winner Steven "Cheese" Berger think of this. Isn't he supposed to Man the shift from 3am-6am late-night-tonight/early-morning-tomorrow? You gotta build that bridge to pro football weekly, and on a night where there's breaking white sox news on THE FLAGSHIP STATION OF YOUR CHICAGO WHITE SOX, WSOX 670 AM CHICAGO --- will the big cheese be there to "appreciate the game" with his new cadre of hardcore fans? i will be masterfully waiting with bated breath to hear from the big cheese on this one. BAPTISM BY FIRE, BROTHER, WELCOME TO DER SCHNORR!

/me starts doing a freestyle jim grey impression to cover the magnanimous resonance of this monumental move by the white sox that shall certainly put a stranglehold on a division that is looking more and more like a war of attrition in the big picture.

You need a win in the last game to make the playoffs.

Humber, Floyd and Liriano are available to start. We all know who'd start.

This is a no brainer. No risk. You lose nothing and cant be worse. And he's probably a rental so they wont have to pay him. Dempster will require too much in return. I roll with this bunch and adding Danks (hopefully) will be like getting another pitcher.

Liriano's ERA was at 8.47 when he rotated back into the starting rotation and out of the bullpen in late May.

He got it all the way down to 4.81 prior to getting shelled by the White Sox Monday night.

Since rejoining the starting rotation in late June, Liriano has won 3, lost 5 while recording 8 "quality" starts out of 11 GS since then.
And his ERA in those 11 starts is under 4.

Shit.

Kenny had to get somebody. What was the list of options besides Liriano? Do the Sox have 4 decent arms to go each week? What happens if Sale goes away?

Kenny will try and get another pitcher. he didn't want the deadline to go by and not get at least one.

Even though he drafted his own son and continues to employ him at AA even though he sucks....i have to give it to KW. He is a Flea Market champion. He gets some good vintage products at bargain prices.

He won't do that again this year. So, the Sock have that going for them, which is nice.
