How many number five guys are better than Humber?

He's the same guy he's always been.

That's not true. He was never a starter, much less in the AL. You act like he has been some run of the mill pitcher for the Sox. He had a really good first half last year and a perfect game this year. He's done some things with this team.

5-5 with a 5.90 ERA. A perfect game is nice...but its one game.

I just wouldnt put that one on Coop's impressive resume.

So his results are the same as Ryan Dempster's.

I love this move. This move could push the Sox over the top. He has Ace stuff when he's right. He's been really good since the end of May but have taken some tough losses and ND's. This move has very little risk and the reward could be enormous. He's pitching for a new deal too.

No actually he hasn't. I am not sure what stats you are looking at, but he has been the epitome of average, and in 2 out of last 3 starts he has been bad.

He HAS had 8 quality starts in his last 11 and lowered his ERA from 9.97 to 5 whatever

right he went from bad to average.

No way you can look at his stats this year and say he has been good for any stretch.

But you're wrong. Excluding his last start against the White Sox he has been really good.

10 games
63 1/3 innings
77 K's
2.84 ERA

That's really good. Unfortunately playing for the Twins he didn't get many victories out of that. I'll take those numbers from any pitcher. Especially in the AL.

I still think he's wild. He barely was able to get six innings tonight. He's an arm, a guy to take the ball. I wouldn't get real excited, but so far, so good.

He's better than just an arm. He's not top of the rotation but he is a guy who can go out and win you a game with little help.

Remember what the Sox gave up to get him. A minor league pitcher who is now the 20th ranked prospect in the Twins organ-I-zation, and a utility infielder who isn't even a top 20 prospect for the Twins.

This was a low risk, high reward trade. I don't think anybody expected Liriano to come in and be Justin Verlander or Jared Weaver.

love to see the sox sign him to a cheap 2 year extension before the end of the season

Drop Peavy, pick up Floyd's option and don't expect anything from Danks

I just don't think there will be any type of home town discount and someone will give him 15 million per on a 2-3 year contract.

welp, i lost my big long post with my feelings on the matter.... basically, this guy is right there in don cooper's wheelhouse for the type of reclamation/rehab project that he's had a pretty good track record of success with during his storied tenure with <announcer's voice> YOUR CHICAGO WHITE SOXXXXX</announcer's voice>

this year>>
Francisco Liriano (2012): 22g 17gs 3w 10l 0sv 0bsv 1hld 0cg 0sho 100.0ip 89h 63r 59er 12hr 55bb 109k 5.31era 1.44whip .239baa
.
meh. not a bad H/IP ratio there (89/100) but the 55 walks coupled with the 12HRs in 100IP = welcome to a 5.31 ERA. he had a pretty good stretch from mid-may to mid-june i wanna say, but then his inconsistency is his #1 consistency..... while it's easy to look back to his 2006 season where he came up and stormed out of the bullpen to get 14 starts of 2.36/1.00 with !!!! K rates, i think the best-case-scenario with this guy comes from a couple'a years ago:

Francisco Liriano (2010): 31g 31gs 14w 10l 0sv 0bsv 0hld 0cg 0sho 191.2ip 184h 77r 77er 9hr 58bb 201k 3.62era 1.26whip .252baa

that's the kind of performance i'd love to see don cooper sprinkle some of dusty's magic pixie dust to get. ideally, seeing as last year he was something like 4.60/1.40 and in 08/09 he was basically 5.00/1.45 or thereabouts, methinks if he shows some promise/potential during the remainder of this season you should be able to ink him to a relatively cheap 2-4 year contract, which would be ideal. something tells me you can get this guy to fall SOMEWHERE in a 3.50-4.25/1.20-1.30 range, and if you do that you'll get a nice K rate with that to make him a really nice little 3/4 slot pitcher in your rotation going forward.

so yeah, my gut reaction is similar to the contreras trade, but this definitely isn't that one. i was a big fan of the contreras trade at the time because i saw esteban loaiza's mexican pitching record career year as just that, a career year, and being able to spin him for a guy with stuff like contreras who buckled under the pressure of having his WELCOME-TO-MLB inaugeral tour with YOUR 27 TIME WORLD CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEES (LED BY DEREK. SANDERSON. JETER. ) but came here and was basically just about the best pitcher in baseball from mid-05 to mid-06.... yeah. i doubt this trade will be as significant as that one, seeing sa that one required you giving up a pitcher who had theoretical value and taking on a rather sizable contract in terms of assuming risk, this one basically only really cost you a utility player and a goofy kid who shit the bed after getting the ball from his first MLB pitch and having his 2nd MLB pitch be a resounding stand up double. welcome to the show.

and yeah, my gut tells me that if the sox can teach this kid how to use a cutter and then get some sort of a sweetheart deal for the guy here in chicago you're going to likely end up with a pitcher closer to those 2010 3.62/1.24ish stats and therefore get a really shrewdly-good deal out of the whole works.

terry boers once said that someone, i think it was royko, told him that writing a column is basically flinging a bunch of shit on the wall and seeing what sticks. kenny has a similar mindset when executing these moves to upgrade the white sox, and while there have been spectacular successes in the past (contreras) and there have been spectacular failures too (manny ramirez) i still like this mentality of getting guys who have shown that they can do it at the big league level at some point in their career, well then shit, you know they have it IN them, it's only a matter of getting it OUT of them (again).... so hey, everyone raise your beer to kenny williams because i love this guy's mentality when he smells tiger blood in the water and goes "mmmm hey i know that smell, that's menstrual blood!" and goes out and gets players with legitimate upside for a song and a dance (youk, myers, and now liriano for a combined large value-size bag of potato chips and a liter of pepsi)

rock on k-dub! stay hollywood and keep those crank voicemails to ozzie comin more often than russell brand in a whorehouse! SHOMER SHABBOS! unlike walter sobchak, "hollywood" k-dubbs DOES indeed roll on saturdays!

You're stuck in something.

2 more years of The Jakemiester. I'm so happy. I'll have to bet my brother another round of golf on Peavy making 30 starts. Easy money.
