No word yet on why, exactly, but he's gone. Dane Sanzenbacher is one smiling motherfucker right about now.

edit: retired, wants to pursue a youth coaching career or something.

Not sure, but here's what he tweeted:

I guess he felt he wasn't going to make the team or something.

I don't count quitting after 3 years "retiring". It's quitting. He is a quitter.

Another stellar draft pick by the Redskins.

What a dumb ass. He was gonna make the team. He walks away from 500k or whatever the NFL minimum is. That's just stupid. You make NFL money for as long as you can.

If you're not dumb with your money, you could be set up for a long time even if your a career special teams guy.

Those kids would be there to teach in 5 years and he would have another 3-4 million to keep his family comfortable

Maybe he wants to maintain what is left of his brain.

According to CSNChicago.com's John "Moon" Mullin, the writing was already on the wall for Thomas. He believes that Devin Thomas wasn't a sure thing to make the 53-man roster, but the sudden retirement caught many off guard.

He wasn't a sure thing but he is a better ST player than Sanzenbacher, which is what they want out of a 6th WR.

I heard The SCORE's Laurence Holmes mention something along those lines before the Royals/White Sox game last night. Holmes seems to think Dane Sanzenbacher's no sure thing to make the final roster either, and thinks Rashied Davis might because of special teams.

I agree. You don't sign Rashied Davis NOT to make the team.
