Do you disagree with that? If so, why?

I think he is calling Terry, Captain Obvious

Indeed; saying the Sox can't win without Sale is akin to saying the Tigers can't win without Verlander. Patently obvious.

Is this a moment of clarity for Bernstein to realize that these PSU coaches have to say certain things?

The #1 goal of the coaches and players at Penn State should be to win football games.

Now, that doesn't mean they should ignore criminal actions, but it's their responsibility to do as well as they can.

These are the first reasonable thoughts on this I've heard from them, probably ever. Thank God.

Could this be the beginning of the end?

The answer: No.

This is neither here nor there, but the Trib's Mark Gonzales has just tweeted CF Alejandro De Aza is out of tonight's White Sox lineup vs. the Royals' Bruce Chen. A sore back sidelining De Aza?

I was referring to football related activities. Attending class and doing well should be expected.

Penn State is actually considered the best football program in the country for academic performance, or at least was for 2011.

If you ignore the Sandusky stuff, Penn State is pretty awesome.

Over/under:

Numbers of days from today when you can read through the entire B&B daily thread and not find a Penn State reference?

I can't even venture to guess how long.

According to a Forbes ranking of schools academically in that state, it ranked 16th.

And when Bernsie affirms that pro football criminals are good to cheer for, while college ones are not.

I get the feeling that he's starting to hedge his words so that if and when he elects to make a major shift in narrative, he can at least attempt to re-frame it in such a way that he can defend by using the 'my larger point all along was ....'.

It's not that I think he thinks he's losing the argument (and I don't think he is, imho) but he's starting to lose enough of his audience (be they dullards, dimwits, or doctors) that not unlike a politician, he's in the process of reopening avenues of discussion he otherwise has closed off until the last week or so.

What is your point? The football program was rated #1 in the country.

I feel that it's an entirely different market, consumer, and message between collegiate and pro.

Sure Don. It's ok if pro athletes assault people, sell drugs, beat their significant others, drive drunk, and run dog fighting rings. You can cheer happily for those guys, and in fact you want those guys on your team because they can run fast. But if you cheer for a college program that had criminal activity you support said activity.

It all makes sense to me.

B&B must not realize that people will buy Wheaties boxes just to keep as memorabilia.

Used to know somebody back in the day that worked at a local General Mills plant .... I got about a half-dozen empty (but sealed) Wheaties boxes celebrating the Bulls championships. Worth money? I doubt it, but I think they're cool.

But they are right about the gold medal thing .... kinda not bright to put a 4th-place finished on your box of cereal.

What do you think that Penn State fans are doing on Sundays?

Yeah, that's so totally what I meant.

College sports love to operate under the pretend auspices of "honor" and "tradition" and the "student athlete" and "personal responsibility" with coaches being "leaders of men" and all that hokey horseshit. Then you have all the same crimes and stories with college players that you see with the pros, except the pros aren't hiding behind those nonsense concepts .... everybody knows the first and only matter at hand is to make money - everything else is secondary and they make no bones about it.

I'm not saying it should be acceptable in one, the other, or both "arenas"; I'm just saying at least with the pros they're not ensconcing their product in a bucket of bullshit that they're trying to peddle as much as anything else with regards to the program.

Unrelated; Bernstein is correct about Fruity Pebbles being the best fruit flavored cereal hands down.

Fruity Pebbles get too soggy too quickly.

Fruit Loops FTW.

Everybody eats cereal wrong but me.

Two red Solo cups ... one for cereal, one for milk. Mouthful of cereal, drink of milk, enjoy.

No utensils, no muss, no fuss, no mushy cereal.

You're welcome.

Agree. I've got the Wheaties Bulls boxes too. I also have a Walter Payton box. They've never been opened and still have the cereal in them(yum!)

I knew a girl that worked at McDonalds in '92, so I have the complete set of Dream Team cups as well.
