If you can't sacrifice them into scoring position, you got to get them there somehow ;)

On Facebook;

Chris Rongey; Well, sure, you can worry about Thornton, but it's pointless. He's not a thing to worry about. He's just fine.
2 hours ago · Like

Frank; C'mon ranger....He's fine until he comes into the game in crucial spots and starts giving up runs. Seems like he does that every other time out. Can't have that out of your supposedly premier lefty in the bullpen.
24 minutes ago · Like

Chris Rongey; That's where you're wrong, Frank. Your perception is inaccurate. You should probably go look through his game logs and you'll see plenty of stretches with 0's.
9 minutes ago · Like

Frank; Since the AS break, Thornton has allowed 19 baserunners in just 11.2 innings, with an ERA north of 7. Show me all the game logs you want. With those numbers, there clearly are not enough 0's being posted. I'll say again, you cannot have that out of your premier lefty coming out of the pen. Meanwhile the Jays have 2 lefties up here in the 10th, and Crain is in the game.....

Earlier in that same post Terry's Peeps posted this;
It's not an either/or proposition. Fans can worry about more than one thing at a time.

Thornton isn't the elite reliever he was a couple years ago. He's the new Javy Vazquez. Every time fans see him, they have no faith in him to get the job done. When he does, it's a pleasant surprise.

I think the problem is this rote one-inning each bullpen usage. You're usually going to find the guy who is having a bad night. Myers was devastatingly unhittable tonight. Why couldn't he have faced five or six batters? Instead he pitched his inning and we burned right through the pen to Septimo who couldn't even get one hitter out. That's the game right there.

Also, it seems we have a lot of guys in the pen who just don't trust their stuff. They get ahead 0-2 and then the timid nibbling begins. I understand the concept of wasting a pitch in certain situations. When you're facing eight and nine hole guys, your best have to be able to go at them Billy Jack style. "Hi, my name is Nate. This is a 98 mph fastball right down the middle. You can't hit it." Ironically, the only guy we have who is confident in his stuff is the one guy who doesn't have any- Matt Thornton.

Finally, Chris Rongey solidified his status as baseball retarded with his "Thornton is fine" tweeting tonight. He's not even drunk and he says that stupid shit. My God!

Frank and I have been arguing on FB with him as well.

Someone mentioned his record and Rongey dismissed it.

Then Frank brought up his ERA since the break and it was deemed as unimportant by the baseball sage.

Agreed - Myers should have gone into his 2nd inning tonight. Septimo is a one hitter kind of pitcher right now.

Was Rongey seriously arguing that Thornton was fine? That can't be serious, he he has to be talking about his mental state or health, certainly not his performance.

ERA can be skewed for relievers if they have one bad inning/outing, but I also posted how Thornton allowed something like 18 baserunners in just 11 innings pitched since the break. Ranger, of course, chose to ignore that. I'll let him know he ignored that little tidbit once I get home today.

Rongey is a clown. If he's trying to say that every team has Thorntons, I can agree with that. I'm sure Tiger fans loathe seeing Phil Coke come into a game. But that doesn't mean we have to be happy to see that guy in a close game or that he is "fine". At one point it appeared that the strength of this bullpen was its lefthanded depth. Now we don't really have any lefties that can be counted on. I'm not sure what the deal with Santiago is. I know we never saw that wipeout screwball that earned him the closer job once he got to the big leagues. But at least he's a guy who can strike out a lefty.

I heard Cooper sticking up for Thornton by saying a lot of hits off him have been broken bat stuff, little flares, stuff I like to call "Twins hits". And that's true, but so what? It happens all the time. I think the problem is that he still throws hard enough that guys don't get a real good swing, but they just hit it weakly to places where no fielder is. And then he makes his one mistake and a guy lashes one off the wall scoring the other guys who got on via little dribblers. It's a bad recipe. But at least he doesn't walk anyone. So there's that.

You guys will be better off once you accept that Rongey just knows more about baseball than you.

Well, he is from Granite City. Everyone I ever met from Granite City and Red Bud is a baseball genius. In Sauget (that's Saw-Zsay') they have an OTB inside the gas station. Did I ever tell you guys about the time I left my ex-wife in the car at the gas pump while I went in to bet a race from Fairmount Park? :lol:

I dont usually like to get into White Sox business but if I were arguing with the baseball challenged Rongey, I would probably point out that Thornton's WHIP this year and last year is settling around 1.3 after hovering around (and even below) 1 even for most of his tenure with the team.

Its pretty simple.

That is why I posted the ERA and baserunners thing the way I did. I wanted to see how Rongey would react to it. He ignored the part that proved my point and ran with the "era isn't a good indicator" bit. He proved, again, how little he knows or cares about the team.

That's ridiculously high for a guy that is supposed to be a reliever in high leverage situations. As much as I think the strikeout is overrated for a starting pitcher, a late inning reliever has to be able to strike guys out. And I'm sure if we actually look at the numbers a bunch of Sox guys have fairly high rates, but it seems like it's awfully tough for them in tight spots. That's why I hated to see Myers blowing guys away last night and then getting pulled after just 13 pitches.

Another good point

K/9
08-10.3
09-10.8
10-12.0
11-9.5
12-7.8

Its like a generic example of a declining reliever. Rongey is a bigger homer than Hawk.

Rongey isn't a homer at all. At least Hawk is a true Sox fan. He lives and dies with the teams success. Ranger is just loyal to the logo on his paycheck...which is fine. I totally respect and understand his POV. But he insults the fans intelligence all the time.

I am probably gonna post those numbers when I get home...if that debate dragged on more than it did last nite.
