Okay, BD, I think I may have your answer, and that answer seems to be: not likely.

There is no specific rule that prohibits this. However, the CBA has a more blanket rule on cap circumvention in which the league office can step in. So technically, you could sign & trade PJ to a large 3-year deal with only the first year guaranteed. Unfortunately, the league would probably not allow such a transaction to go through, because it'd be pretty obvious what the Bulls were up to, and it's called cap circumvention. Expiring contracts are valuable, but they would cease to be so if you could simply create one out of thin air.

Maybe this could happen. Rick Bucker said Kobe met with Jerry Busse and reinterated his demand to be traded. He gave 3 teams. Bulls, Knicks, and Suns.

They won't trade him to the Suns in their own conference. The Knicks have shit to offer. Big contracts to match but no talent.

That leaves the Bulls. Gordon, Thomas and the number 9. Not equal for the Lakers but if Kobe doesn't want to be there this is the best they can get.

Bucker said if it's going to happen it will likely happen before next weeks draft. That way the Lakers can have that 9th pick for a guy they want.

I don't know. It sounds like more then just a pipe dream. It sounds like it could happen. I'd do it in a heart beat. I'm sure most Bulls fans would as well.

I think the Bulls would have to sign Gordon to an extension. But I'm not sure how that works because even if they do Gordon still has one year left and he will play under that original contract for next year. Thomas is on his rookie deal and whatever the 9 pick gets. But I still don't think that adds up to Kobe's money.

But hey, Rick Bucker said it so maybe it can happen.

Ben Wallace would almost certainly have to be involved to make the money work. Also, PJ & Nocioni can't S&T until well after the draft, and they both have final say as to where (or if in PJ's case) they play next year.

What I ask myself is whether the Bulls have a) unsold seats to move at the UC or b) an upcoming radio/TV rights contract coming up, in which the presence of a Kobe might bring in extra cashage. Barring either of these, and knowing that Reinsdorf mostly gets worked up about baseball championships, I got to ask myself why Paxson'd act on any of this.

The Bulls have not been a team, historically, that loads up for bear on an every-year basis so they can be competitive (sort of the basis of Kobe's complaint with the Lakers.) We been through several lean years: the Tim Floyd & Bill Cartwright eras. Paxson doesn't impress me as a win at all costs GM. So I dunno. I just don't see the reason to get too wound up about any Kobe migration...

I don't think Paxson is going to make a trade that involves him giving up at least two players from Deng, Gordon, Hinrich, and Thomas. He has drafted well, and I think this team is only one inside scorer away from making the next step - and I'm not even sure they need to add anything to get out of the East, provided the players on the team continue to improve.

I think to win the championship, they would need something more down low.

i would rather have just kobe over all three blake gordon and hinrich together
