People can have opinions on anything. We know that. But some people may have a better grasp of a subject than others.

Darkside knows more about gun safety and hockey than I do. I can still talk about both things, but I obviously don't know as much as he does on either subject. Not really a controversial thought, one would assume. But for some reason, it's a foreign idea here...

Why would you be better qualified to speak about it?

Based on your posts...it seems as if you view the white folks as...uninvolved. But if the white folks are uninvolved...who are the "bad guys" of this institutional racism you see?

I never said me, silly. I obviously know nothing.

I just remember a post from Darkside where he admitted to not being exposed to much in the way of racsim. His words. Then he comes in a thread and says racism is all but dead with a few hold outs.

There are no enemies here. My race (or lack there of) has nothing to do with anything. I just like to discuss things like this from time to time. It's hard for some people not to get upset, though...

The concept that all opinions aren't equal is difficult for some people.

Racism is still a pretty big problem outside of big cities like Chicago from what I have seen. Maybe some think it's a big problem there too. It might be.

It's definitely a problem in North Dakota, Texas, and Louisiana. To my surprise North Dakota was easily the worst, from what I saw of the month I was there.

I think Denis had a great point in that many outside factors are often ignored whenever race is an issue.

Racism exists today. I know it, I hear it, I get it, but its nothing at all like what it was like 40-50 years ago. Yes, there's plenty of room for improbement but we all live in a better place than our parents did and your kids will live in a better place yet.

Honestly, the statement is probably accurate. But I wouldn't guess it is at a "place" where it is even close to acceptable today. It may not even be at acceptable levels for the next generation. But I would guess it is better than 50 years ago.

What is acceptable one might ask? Not sure. At least there are more laws in place that attempt to give people equality in schools, voting, housing to name a few. These laws have helped. What probably will take much more time is for the general populace's individual attitudes toward people not like themselves to be more accepting. Who knows when that might improve.

I agree with the statement that racism is not the same today as it once was. Stereotypes still exist between people of different races, but now people express it in different ways. It has oddly become more acceptable in the mainstream, especially in the way many races choose to address racism in a joking or pop culture manner.

Let's face it; a white comic making fun of "Crackers" is essentially the same thing as poking fun of the n-word.

You write about golf. What do you know about racism?

I just hope I'm around in another 50 years to be able to experience the Future of Racism. It sounds like it will almost be pleasant, all things considered. Ah, who am I kidding? I'll be dead.

Really? So essentially in your opinion every white person in America is unqualified to have an opinion on racism?
I suppose you're right. I, nor 120 million other americans, should be allowed to have a qualified opinion on race relations in america, and that isn't racist at all.

Thank you for showing me how incorrect I am to have an opinion.

I'll see myself out now, of this and all future discussions of race because that's probably the healthiest thing to do, tell everyone not like you that they don't deserve to talk about it.

You're good at this.

You can talk about whatever you like. Strangely enough, I can as well. If that's ok with you, of course.

Is it ok for me to have an opinion? It's your opinion that racism is a thing of the past and is no longer an issue in this country. I believe that it isn't gone and is still a problem. You think people who are subjected to racism are not as reliable as those who aren't when it comes to speaking on racism. I disagree. Not sure why you are getting so upset about this. We can disagree. It's ok...
