How much different is this from the people who move next to the Mississippi, then cry for federal assistance each year when their property floods?

When you live in a hole (literally, not figuratively) next to the ocean, shit's gonna happen!

How many of the people who fled NO after Katrina have moved back there?

The thing of it is that New Orleans wasn't literally next to the ocean....until Big Oil, corrupt LA politicians & the Federal Gov't cut channels through the thousands of sq. miles of marshlands. Those same marshlands that formerly provided a natural buffer (such as it was) against hurricanes were sacrificed in the name of oil/gas pipelines & other channels....that profited the much more politically astute state of Texas. Those marshlands are now largely gone, washed into the Gulf. Take a look at satellite photos of the LA coast from say 1970 and compare it to today, it's shocking. Almost along the lines of the polar ice caps of then and now. In the name of progress. Or...commerce.

Or,

If this country had say the forethought of the Netherlands (another area largely below sea level) and built a legitimate levee/floodgate system, there wouldn't be a LA "problem" such as it is. But, that would entail a (God forbid) infrastructure program that would disproportionately benefit the wrong kind (non-political donating  ) of people. But nevertheless would have saved tens if not hundreds of billions of dollars.

How many people returned? Hundreds of thousands. Why? It's their home, a home some of us find special in ways others can't appreciate....but one that outsiders who consider it to be an armpit they still spend billions attempting to revel in (or copying its) art, music, writing, food, etc..

And finally, if you "live in a hole" stuff's going to happen. It's just sad that the worst stuff happened when levees were intentionally blown up (1927) or failed due to the human neglect, ineptitude and greed that compromised any levee "system" built in the 50-60 years before 2005. Each time "shit" happened it was as a result of human self dealing, theft and/or fraud.

If a new and well designed levee/floodgate system was built would that replace the natural marshland barrier? Or is the city behind the 8-ball for the rest of time?

So we are all in agreement then, no one cares about NO?

I had fun there, good food, good music, cheap booze and a bunch of strip clubs I enjoyed. The fan boat ride around the wetlands was fun as well.

Locals were nice.

The city is like California or Miami, stuff's gonna happen regardless of a new flood control system and/or regeneration of the wetlands. But I'd posit that with good planning, it has a better long term outlook than say Dallas, Phoenix or Vegas.

Personally however, I don't see the value in Dallas, Phoenix or Vegas

....but the French were blameless...here

Never been to Dalls.

If Vegas was burned to the ground I really wouldn't care.

Phoenix may very well be the most empty and pointless city on Earth, at least in my opinion. It's a ghost town.

YUp I agree.
I am also one of the guys who thinks that you should only be bailed out max of two times for flooding or shit like that. Tornadoes is a different thing. You never know where they are going to pop up until they do. I mean here in the Quad Cities they built the Baseball Stadium right on the river front so it Floods every fracking year. It looks nice 85% of the year but that 15% they surround it with barriers and you have to walk a plank bridge from the parking lots to get to the game.

It was the perfect plan. With all of the fun things the Republicans have been saying lately, a fake hurricane would surely bring out a "God is mad at the gays" or two...

My people are staying put for this event. They rebuilt on the same lot after the Katrina incident and used 5' of underpinnings to raise the floor to just about 2' above sea level. That was approximately where Katrina topped off at his location. His major beef is the whole extended family is staying at there pad. When/if the power goes out makes for uncomfortable family talk.
