Jaguars get first real victory of the season

The Jaguars won three games in the preseason, but their most recent preseason victory is the only one that matters.

Running back Maurice Jones-Drew has reported to the team, ending his 38-day holdout without getting a new contract.

It’s a win for the Jaguars. Agent Adika Bakhari declined comment on the question of whether Jones-Drew received any concessions or inducements to report, which means at a minimum that Jones-Drew didn’t get a new deal, or an adjustment to his existing one.

At most, Jones-Drew can hope for a waiver or reduction of his fines, which at $30,000 per day exceed $1.1 million. That’s nearly 25 percent of his $4.45 million base salary in 2012.

Of course, if he hadn’t reported this week, Jones-Drew wouldn’t have been able to earn the first installment of his $4.45 million base salary, which is paid out in 17 checks of $261,764.70 each.

Even if the fines are waived, the holdout accomplished nothing. Jones-Drew didn’t get a new contract and doesn’t know the new offense. Both the player and the team will be affected by his absence, once the real games start in seven days.

That doesn’t change our (or at least my) relatively new attitude on player holdouts. If a player believes that he’s not receiving fair value for his performance and if he’s willing to incur the fines and risk not getting a new deal by withholding services, he has every right to stay away. Still, Jones-Drew underestimated the resolve of owner Shahid Khan — and now the experiences of the 2011 rushing leader will provide motivation for other owners to take a similar stand in the future and a warning to other players regarding the potential consequences of swinging for the fences, and hitting only air.

And of course I feel very sorry for anyone who drafted this clown for their fantasy teams.

Fantasy wise I would not take him no matter where he fell to me. Let someone else take him. I saw Matthew Berry had him as the 5 ranked back as soon as the holdout was over. Does he not remember just last year Chris Johnson did the exact same thing last year (but he at least got a new contract)? You miss a significant amount of training camp and it hurts you. It's as simple as that.

MJD had a reputation for being one of the good guys. His words & actions during his holdout hurt that rep. Having said that, I grabbed him in the 3rd round this morning in a FF draft. He'll still be a stud this year.

The holdout doesn't bother me as NFL players should try to grab as much as possible since they can get cut at any point.

That being said, you have to have people around you who are smart enough to realize if it will work or not. If the Jags waive the fines, then it basically just meant he got out of training camp.

MJD is a big question mark. Adrian Peterson is the only one who is a bigger question going into the season, as he's yet to practice/play in any contact situations.

I have always like MJD, but how this went down took a lot of polish off his image.

And if you take him there in the draft with us once it's set up, the rest of us will be eternally grateful

I'm sure he at least worked out a compromise with the jags to waive the fines for reporting.

I understand why a team draws the line on these guys but after seeing Chris Johnson take to about game 8 last year to do anything, does the team really win?

I took him in the 4th. The pickings were pretty slim at that point so I was more than happy to take my chances on possible greatness. Chris Johnson still got 1,000 yards last season. I will take that from a 4th round pick.

There was a fantasy "guru" on AM 1000 yesterday who said that MJD should be a top pick because he has "thick legs" and therefore won't have problems getting up to speed like Johnson did last year.

Might not of gotten the injury right, but he certainly screwed up his career with his non-hold out.

Wonder if we should question his toughness, like he did about Jay Cutler.......
