He's been a Bulls' fan favorite at the end of head coach Tom Thibodeau's bench each of the last 2 seasons and followed Thibodeau to Chicago from Boston when Tom got the job. Now, could the "White Mamba" be trading in his #24 Bulls' white, red & black uniform for a suit & tie on Coach Thibs' bench? According to CSNChicago.com's Aggrey Sam, Brian Scalabrine could be joining Thibodeau's staff...as an assistant this upcoming NBA season.
Although he expressed his desire to continue playing, albeit sparingly, in an in-depth piece by Bulls.com's Sam Smith this summer, the veteran backup forward might fill the role vacated by Rick Brunson, according to sources close to CSNChicago.com's Bulls Insider. Brunson left Chicago this offseason to take a similar role with the Charlotte Bobcats and the Bulls have such an opening in their organization since Brunson left. As for Scalabrine, even though he developed a cult following and averaged just over 1 point per game in just over 200 minutes of very limited playing time with the Bulls, the 34 year-old, 11-year NBA veteran is considered to be highly regarded and knowledgeable and might make the easy transition to coaching.
Right after the Bulls' NBA Playoff bellyflop vs. the Philadelphia 76ers this past spring, Scalabrine served as a guest studio analyst for Comcast SportsNet New England's playoff coverage of Scal's former team, the Boston Celtics.
