Hello, friends...

I will be visiting wonderful Milwaukee this weekend and would love to know if there are any "Wisconsin Only" brews that I should drink and also buy to take back home.

I know about New Glarus and love their Spotted Cow and Moon Man.

Any other brews out there in the Cheese-head State that I should look into?

Anything that comes from Stevens Point.

My Parents were in Wisconsin last weekend and my Dad brought me back some Spotty Cow. I'm about to pop one open in a couple minutes.

Lakefront Brewery brewed in Milwaukee. But I'm pretty sure you can get it in Chicago.

Tour Lakefront Brewery. Very entertaining, good beer (4 are included) & a free glass. Sprecher is another option as well. Milwaukee Ale House is a great spot for lunch (in historic 3rd ward on the river). My favorite WI beers are from Bull Falls (Wausau), O'so (south of Stevens Pt), Petosi (north of Galena) & Capital Brewery (Middleton - near Madison). Finally, if you find yourself in Madison check out "The Old Fashion". It overlooks the capital and offers about 100 WI beers.

I will be in Milwaukee beginning at noon or so....which of those establishments are close enough to go and make it back to the city with time far a bar hop or two?

Lakefront, Sprecher and the Alehouse are in Milwuakee. It's not that big so getting from one side to the other is pretty easy. There is also a brewery boat tour which takes you to 4 that are on the river. If you've got time, The Safehouse is cool. Spy themed restaurant and bar. Need a password to get in or they make you do goofy things. Look it up first though because it's disguised as an export house.

I've been to the Safe House before.....I loved it. I found the secret exit through the telephone booth to be pretty cool.I will make a point to hit those places up though.

Sprecher is cool, did the tour.

Try Horny Goat, you can only get that in Wisconsin. My fave is the Horny Blonde

If you are talking about the beer tour, I would agree... although I think New Glarus has several very good beers. Spotted Cow is almost the definition of a perfect session beer in my opinion.

I'm talking about product. I don't think that New Glarus is anything special. I think it gets over-rated, simply because it is unavailable in Illinois. If I have crossed the Cheese Curtain, then Tyranena and Central Waters is what I shall seek.

If you make it out to the little town, they've got a nice little restaurant with the brewery. I don't drink at all, but took a sip of their beer/lemonade mix. Tasted like rat piss to me. But everyone else (all who will drink from time to time) loved it.

Have made two trips to Potosi - the first time I brought back a six pack of beer. Second time was the beer/lemonade. I guess everyone liked the regular beer, too.

Check out the Milwaukee Ale House and get yourself a Pull Chain Pail Ale.

My favorite bar in Milwaukee is actually right next to The Safehouse. It is a little bar called
The Milwaukee Press Club. Right across from the Pabst Theater. Incredible collection of
autographs grace the walls and some really incredible framed newspapers from famous
dates in history. Another really cool thing about the place is if you ask the bartender to
spin you into The Safehouse, he takes you to a booth in back and the entire thing spins
around dropping you in the middle of the dance floor at The Safehouse. As for beers
you will easily find something you l like. When I drank one of my favorites was the Lakefront
White Ale. Good summer beer.

Von Triers is a cool old German bar near UWM, also an interesting area http://www.vontriers.com/libations.php. There's a great old-time, proletarian pizza joint nearby called Zaffiro's. Definitely worth checking out.

If you're into ice cream, Kopps is renowned for its frozen custard, but I prefer the classic 1940s-50s drive-in setting afforded by Leon's:leonsfrozencustard.us, kopps.com.

Downtown Milwaukee is home to one of the country's best used bookstores, Renaissance Books. It's disorganized, dilapidated, dusty, gothic, creepy and HUGE--everything an old bookstore should be. Not sure if they've reopened since the city shut them down for building code violations last fall: jsonline.com/business/city-closes-downtown-renaissance-book-shop-132713008.html.

I have had many memorable lunches at Coquette Cafe in the Third Ward: coquettecafe.com. Great French Onion Soup and Croque Monsieur sandwiches.

I like also drinking at the brewpubs on the river--as someone references above--but haven't had good experiences with the food. Anyway, these are just a few things that immediately popped to mind upon mention of your of Milwaukee day trip. This is only the tip of the iceberg. Milwaukee is a very cool city.

For me, Kopps' burgers are the real star and much tastier than the custard.

A stone's throw from Von Trier's that TM mentioned above is the Oriental Theater/Landmark.
This part of town is considered "The Eastside". North Ave right along the lake. Anyway, the
Landmark is kind of an arcade/ pool hall / bowling alley. If you happen to be on that side of
town it may be worth checking out. The bowling alley is pretty cool. You have to keep your
score on a sheet with a pencil and the ball returns are all above ground which you don't see
too often anymore. The Oriental Theater above it is very cool, just like a page out of the 20's
or 30's. They have a lot of movie festivals held there. A lot of other bars along North Ave.
Used to be a really good pizza place there on the corner of North and Oakland called Pizza
Man but it burned down a few years back and they never rebuilt it.

Within a small area downtown you have Rock Bottom Brewery, Water Street Brewery, Milwaukee Ale House, and the Horney Goat.

All have their own brands, some good, some meh, but all serve food in their resternts.

I'd swear we'd have to have ran in to each other once or twice at some point, as often as you seem to be in my (metaphorically speaking) back yard.

I've tried Potosi before...it was alright...but I'm not exactly someone who you should ask if a beer is good or not.

My Bro-in-law took me to the Sugar Maple in Bay View area of Milw. Trendy, storefront kinda bar with 300+ microbrews, 75 or so on tap. Sample what you want, get bigger glasses of what you like.

With all the breweries to visit it looks like my wife and I will be heading to Milwaukee a bit earlier then planned.

That is a hell of a lot of good information, some of it I didn't even know and I have lived here for over 16 years.

I'm losing my hip Milw connection as my b-i-l and family are moving to Texas next month . We only visited 3-4 times per year, but he knew the spots to go- breweries, bars, ping-pong clubs, etc. Guess I'll have to track down HawgAss!
