Scorehead should remind us how much of a waste of money Julius Peppers was and how we should sign Aaron Kampman.

Shea McClellin cannot hold up at the point of attack on rushing plays. He's quick enough to beat the worse offensive tackles of the league one on one in obvious passing situations, but I'd run at him all damn day.

Any chance they pull Cutler and let Hanie play the 4th?

But that's much easier to hide as a 3-4 outside backer. That's why many people correctly questioned his fit within Lovie's scheme. I guess his potential ceiling might still be Mark Anderson's rookie season, but probably still a worse run defender than Anderson was/is. He just isn't a defensive end.

Sure, and that's great as all, but this team basically has a one-year window. So I'm not wild about having wasted the only first round pick you've had in 19 seasons on a player that can't really contribute this year.

Plus, I'm not really looking forward to rebuilding the entire defense after the inevitable Lovie firing, especially since we'll be doing the dopey Bears thing where you switch to what everyone else is doing, which is precisely when resources are hardest to get.

Bears and Colts have almost-identical offensive numbers at this point. Big difference is the turnovers + field position.

It's also kinda funny that Melton seems to be a potential pro bowl tackle along side Peppers in a 4-3 defense but he'd basically be lost on a 3-4. I don't think he could fill the end spot adequately and he's obviously too small for the NT spot.

Briggs is a bit wasted as a 3-4 MLB too.

It's kinda breaking too. Things look better than they are (on defense) because 1.) the Colts lost an offensive possession because of the pick 6 and 2.) that missed FG at the end of the first half. They're being rolled pretty good by a team with a QB making his first start ever and zero NFL running backs.

Yes a bit. But I still think he would be a valuable ILB when it comes to the run. But he's another player that's benefitted from Urlacher, in the sense that he needs guys around him to maximize his strengths. The Bears would need at least two years to start acquiring the base pieces for a 3-4. The Packers are sti struggling with the transition and would be much more lost if they didn't hit on Clay Matthews, and to a much lesser extent, Raji. I'm not sure what Emery's plan is I guess. Let
Marinelli coach the kid up, it seems.

Anyway, good Bear win today. They did what they needed to, and looked like the much superior team that we thought they were. The running game looks good. Cutler-Marshall looks good. I thought Bennett played pretty well. I thought the safeties did a good job. I'm looking forward to Thursday.

On the other hand, the offense has been very efficient. And Jay Cutler looks much better than I expected. I'll wait to celebrate until we face a defense with a pulse but so far, so good.

I think Briggs is a player with a limited skill set but who is about as good as it gets as a tackler and run defender. They go a good job of designing the defense so that he's free as often as possible. I think in a 3-4 he gets eaten up a bit too often. He wouldn't be a bad player at MLB, but you'd be overpaying him for how he fits in now.

I had no idea Mewelde Moore was still in the league. I guess he's only 30, but that's damn old for a running back.

Things no one says, of course. But the problem with Cutler -- even today -- is that no matter how bad the defense, he has 3 - 5 really bad decisions that can kill your team if they go the wrong way (see the Washington Redskins game a few years ago). He's like a multiple-choice test taker who always gets a B- even when they know the stuff. He fills in the wrong bubble too many times.

Today is no exception. But he's good enough to light up a bad or even decent defense. He's not Rex Grossman.

That's why I snuck the "necessarily" in there.

Why is Cutler in the game.

Why would you argue that Melton is a potential pro bowl tackle? He made an impact in maybe 3 games last season. 4 of his sacks came in the first game against a backup.

Exactly. The Packers game will be a much better test, offensively and defensively. Cutler could've eaten a footlong sub while sitting back in the pocket on many of his attempts. I don't expect that protection to hold against the Pack.

Maybe it was the few games I saw. I only saw 6-7 Bears games last season. I noticed him on the field consistently. To me, that's a high compliment to a 4-3 DT. I think he can at least be an above average starter. He can get to the QB and has shown potential against the run, although he's still inconsistent in both departments.

I like Melton. He's decent.

Very enertaining thread with the ebbs and flows of emotion

I very much enjoyed the Bears offense today. Hopefully the line improves throughtout the year, like Tice's OL's usually do.

Having two big receivers is very noticeable right away. (Like it)

Marshall looks like he's about 7'3 out there and not 6'5.
