Maybe you've found a new place since the last thread.

At this point, I've realized that Mini Ditka and his schtick are here to stay, so I just go along with it.

That being said, Dino and Nicks around Armitage and Pulaski.

I went to Johnnies on North Ave in Elmwood Park a few weeks ago, and while it was good, it wasn't worth the wait in line.

Al's is pretty awesome imo, but I ate there over 60 times while at UIC.
Pop's is good.
The Italian Beef at the bar I frequent (Hitz) is very good too.

Out here in the cultural mecca of Schaumburg, I've been getting the cheezy beefs from Zippy's. Sometimes Portillo's or Johnnies if I'm in the area of one.

*edit- Zippy's is actually in Hoffman Estates

While the quality has slipped over the years, Johnnie's is still the king.

I acknowledge my own biases, but my mom's place does a pretty good Italian Beef, I even have a special order/secret menu way (Cory Style - Italian Beef Dry with hot peppers and cheese, well, well done)
When I was in DeKalb, I thought that Tom & Jerry's Italian Beef on Garlic Bread with Cheese was also pretty good.

Nope. I still live in Heroin, Illinois where we have nothing. I guess short of a 35 mile drive to the Portillos in Oswego, Bobaluks in Martucky has a passable Italian beef.

Ferros on 31st and Wentworth has a decent beef.

Like Pops and Ricobenes as well. I don't know what my favorite is though cuz I don't get them very much.

Once again,I must mention Lukes in Arlington Heights on Rand Road. I usually just get a "gravy dip" for a buck. Sometimes a beef which is delicious. Great Hot Dogs, fries, sub sandwiches. That place rocks.

Maybe I am a bit out of touch, but I've never heard of a gravy dip... for $1, I'm guessing it is an empty bun dipped in the gravy?

The Al's that have been popping up in the Suburbs are all a little off to me. The original location in Chicago is top notch though.

I'll take Buona Beef over Portillo's every time. By the time you unwrap Portillo's beef it is dripping wet and the bread has turned into mush... keep it.

So you don't like a real italian beef?

I need some separation between the bread and the beef, my hands need protection that Portillo's just doesn't offer...

Exactly. I like to keep the integrity of the sandwich.

Bobo's near Irving Park & Cumberland is solid.

Never had a bad beef at Portillo's. Consistently good.

Those satellite Al's locations blow.

Let's try again...

Damenzo's on Taylor, just west of the Juvey had a great beef. The bread was pretty soft, so you didn't have to ask for dipped. Made it less messy. They had a jumbo beef that was absolutely huge. I'd had both the sweet and hot peppers and both were more than satisfactory. Not sure if it is the same after the fire.

Just order it dry. It's better that way. Only sissies need their bread soaked. Real men chew.
