Stemming from a conversation with IMU in another thread, what are some of the best video game sequels you can remember, and why?

IMO, TECMO Super Bowl is perhaps one of the best sequels of all time. While the premise of the game remained the same (as does any sport title), the sheer volume of enhancements and extra features blew gamers away at that time. Game controls was obviously limited due to the NES hardware, but having the ability to save progress, an expanded playbook, NFLPA license, and stat-tracking was groundbreaking.

Street Fighter 2 and Warcraft 2. The originals were weak, while the sequels were epic.

Road Rash II

I'm having a hard time with this (and most likely overthinking it) but a lot of the stuff from decades past were less sequels and more reimaginations of the same game (which would explain me leaving out Mario and Zelda titles already mentioned) so I'm going to choose to exclude those from my list.

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Halo 3
Uncharted 2
Mass Effect 2
Portal 2
Half Life 2

Ms. Pac Man
Galaga
Elevator Action II
MK II
Qix II
Millipede
Super Mario Brothers
Pole Position II

Eight Ball Deluxe
Getaway: High Speed 2
Bride of Pinbot
... I know these aren't video games, ya dick ... give me a choice of every video game or every pinball, I take the latter, and you're wrong for disagreeing ...

Warcraft 3's improvement over Warcraft 2 was even bigger than Warcraft 2 over the original.

You heard it here first.

I never got into WC3. I tried it for a few months and found they complicated the game too much. The relative simplicity of WC2 made it the perfect pvp game.

HL2 was the only one of those better than its predecessor. (Excluding Halo, I've never played those so I can't comment.)

IW forgot how to make multiplayer maps after COD4.

Uncharted 1's gameplay was rough, but every other factor (environments, story, dialogue) was better in the original.

ME2 was a let down...shouldn't even be called an RPG any longer.

Portal 2 added co-op...but doesn't have the "feel" the first game had.

I'll disagree on a few of those originals being better but for the sake of this thread I'll spot you all of them...because I didn't see any requisite where the sequel had to be better than its predecessor.

Oh...I kind of thought that is what we were going for. Maybe I'm wrong...all the ones I posted were games I thought took significant leaps over the originals.

Maybe it was. Even so, most everything I put on there would stay for me.

We really don't see eye to eye on those new-fangled video games.

I don't see eye to eye with a lot of people here on them.

My original thought was to list sequels that were a vast improvement over the original.

IMU WINS. FATALITY.

edit: Though Babality might be more fitting.

I'm thinking that immessedup16 had to be a lot better than this version...

I was being 100% facetious.

I do enjoy the battle system...but it isn't even 1/10th of what FFX was.

May your girlfriend get implants.
