I found the opposite to be true. They are friendly rubes, like rustics in a Shakespearean play

Illinois is a pretty unfriendly state compared to the others I have been to over the past five years. Thats still only like 10% of the country, but still.

Some of them get really pouty when they feel like Illinoisans are all up in their area, but in most situations they're friendly to a fault. I was grocery shopping one time and someone goes up to me and says "gettin' ready for the big game, huh?", to which I said "no, I'm just getting food," and hurried out the door such that it was a small miracle I remembered to pay for my Doritos and Swiss Cake Rolls.

This thread is funny. I have lived in northern WI as well as right on the border, not to mention the northern
burbs of IL and downstate in Champaign and Bloomington/Normal. Lived in Memphis, TN and on the east
coast. People are people in general. From Milwaukee across to Madison down to the IL state line you likely
wouldn't notice a whole lot of difference between people from IL and WI. Yeah, a majority of people up here
are nice and don't have that "big city edge" to them. You are going to run into assholes anywhere you go.
I find them to be most prevalent out east. Once you move north of Milwaukee and Madison then you are
going to get the people who hate Illinois folk. The feel you all just come up there and litter and are rude
and all that other stuff. You do provide a lot of tourist dollars which they fail to see. I would tend to agree
with Hatchetman that the midwesterners are likely the friendliest. Iowa, MN, WI, IL, IN and MI. Just my
opinion. Never been to the Dakotas but I imagine they are pretty friendly too.

People from central Missouri are unfriendly, at least in my travels. Maybe they just didn't like me because they could tell I was a Yankee. Truly a border state: midwestern stoicism without the gregarious friendliness, southern without the hospitality.

People from WI are without question among the friendliest I've encountered. The thing I find the strangest, however, is that so many places north of the border still take checks. Gas stations, restaurants,...etc. I never even carry a check anymore for fear I would be laughed at if I tried to use one.

And trust me, people still write them.

Everytime I am in line at the grocery store there is at least one person that writes a check. They
stand there, watch all their stuff get checked out, are given the total, and then they decide to pull
out the checkbook and start writing the check.
