Last night's game near the end of a playoff race... 20,000 in attendance. 49.8% capacity. Hello? Is there anybody out there?

Hoffy, you are a Cubs/Red Sox fan. Why do you care how many people are at the Sox game? If (when) the Sox win the division or more, they don't put an asterisk there based on attendance....as much as you, bigfan, and a lot of the Cubs fans here would like that.

Do Fans Matter? The Effect of Attendance on the Outcomes of Major League Baseball Games

Smith, Erin E / Groetzinger, Jon D.

Citation Information: Journal of Quantitative Analysis in Sports. Volume 6, Issue 1, Pages –, ISSN (Online) 1559-0410, DOI: 10.2202/1559-0410.1192, January 2010

Published Online: 2010-01-28

We examine the role of attendance in home-field advantage for Major League Baseball, using a dataset of all MLB games played from 1996 to 2005. Using two-stage least squares, we find that attendance has a significant effect on the home-field advantage. Our results indicate that a one standard deviation increase in attendance results in a 4% increase in the likelihood of a home team win. We also find that if attendance as a percent of stadium capacity were to increase by 48%, we would expect the home team's run differential to increase by one run. We show that the additional home-field advantage is driven by increased home team performance.

Yes, I'm a Cubs and Red Sox fan, but I can also appreciate baseball in general. It's just disappointing to see that a fan base is not coming out to support a team that is having one of the more incredible seasons in the past decade or so given the expectations going in.

As a cub fan I am not throwing stones. The o ly thing better than Oct baseball is Sept ball when it matters. I wish I had a chance to see my team there. Too bad more folks cant make it. The atmosphere is really outstanding. Especially a glorious fall day like today. Definitely worth missing work.

You know, maybe this is the foundation for my issue with it. I realize how fucking awesome it was to be at the 2003 Reds game a few before the Cubs clinched and how electric it was for every out. In addition, we all remember the black out game. White Sox fans can be passionate and I think it is insulting that they are not out there now for this team. Its insulting to the players that have over-achieved this year. If I was a White Sox fan, I would be ripping on fans for now showing up. Instead, everyone is providing their excuses for how it just doesn't matter.

Sox fans pride themselves on being savvy baseball fans, on being "experts" @ the game. You guys hold a moral superiority over Cub fans who "only go to the game for the ballpark, to get drunk & look @ tits. Sox fans go for the game." Yet, whether their team is winning or losing they don't show up. Sox fans know when to run their fucking gums when they want to pat themselves on the back, but their actions show otherwise.

A lot of times Sox fans say things like "we only come out when we have a winner or a good team." Well this year kinda throws that idea out the window.

At no point during this season, even with the Sox controlling first place most of the year, have I thought this was a good team. I think this is a mediocre team that overachieved in a bad division. I will still believe that whether they make the playoffs or not too. I'm sure a lot of Sox fans probably feel the same way. It is just difficult for me to feel excitement about this team.

I never really hear Sox fans say that. That's something the media says to explain why the attendance is relatively low. And I say relatively. Two million in a year is something the "genius promoter" Bill Veeck couldn't even dream about.

I like how Cubs fans seem to think that because the park is half full that it takes away from the division title the Sox are going to win. "Oh, we drew more fans!" Oh, the '05 World Series TV ratings were super low!" Guess what you hosers, that doesn't take away any of the shine or glory from winning a division title or a ring 8)

Sox fans here have said it several times.

Not too long ago was the whole discussion about how the attendance got such a boost from 05. And it was stated that "we come out when we have a winner."

That has always been one of the familiar things. Cubs fans are stupid for coming out for baseball that is bad and Sox fans tho smaller in number are smarter fans because they only come out for a winner.

The attendance talk is dumb any way you look at it. There seems to be a narrative put forth by the media that the Sox "deserve" to have higher attendance. That isn't the way the world works. It's up to the seller to interest the buyer. The consumer owes the vendor nothing. If a winning team isn't filling the stands, the seller has to ask himself why not. Obviously, looking at the attendance in the two Chicago ballparks, winning has very little to do with sales.

I'll be there tonight.

That isn't something fans themselves say unless they are goaded by the media. If you really "only come out for a winner", you aren't going to be going to many ballgames. The idea of "supporting the team" is ludicrous. People go to games because it's fun. It's not about supporting a team. I don't need to support guys who make more in a week than I'll make this year. I go because I like it. If people aren't going it's because they don't.

I think it's funny that bernstein is concerned about people "supporting the team" when that entire concept is antithetical to his view of sports. That may actually be a bit of WSOX creeping in to the show.

So the Sox fans that say it here have been goaded by the media?

First, I would ask who the Sox fans are that say it? Are they guys that go to a game once every three seasons? I hardly thinking winning is the impetus for their attendance. Yeah, if they make the playoffs a lot of douchebags that never go will suddenly want to sit in the front row.

I just think it's BS. Just something for lazy broadcasters to use to explain the failings of Brooks Boyer: "Sox fans don't come out unless the team is winning." That's a tough argument now, isn't it?

I agree the whole argument is BS. I have always thought that. Whether it is about Cub fans coming out for a team that loses or whether you are talking about the Sox fans not coming out for a winner. It has just always seemed like a point of pride for some Sox fans to pound their chest towards the North side and feel like they are better fans because they only come out for a winner. I have never really understood it. Neither do I understand the Cub fans who pound their chest towards the South side and feel like they are better fans because they have a higher attendance.

I blame Mike North.

He made it ok to "boycott" the Sox.

There is nothing more the Sox can do to attract people to the park short of giving tickets and concessions away.

And I'm not even sure that would work.
