I was thinking about McDade's today because I was reading a book about President Reagan's attempted assasination and as I posted in the thread about the book we found out when we were at Mcdades.

Does anyone else remember Montgomery Wards? McDades or Service MErchandise?

I remember Mcdades and Service Merchandise as being for lack of a better word somewhat cheesey and weird.

Probably the most cheesy and weird things about these places as all 3 employed me at some time in my teens/early 20s.

Hey, I got lost at the St. Charles Mall as a toddler. You should have stayed lost!

Or maybe it was Stratford. Why would I have been in St. Charles?

We purchased my wife's engagement ring and our wedding rings at Service Merchandise.

Wife's first job was at Golden Bear restaurant which for a time was owned by Montgomery Ward.

Service Merchandise- you would pay for your stuff at the register, and then they would send it out on a conveyor belt. They also had weird pricing in their catalogs. It would show something called list pricing to make their regular retail price look better. But their regular prices sucked, they were full retail pricing you would get anywhere. No one charged that made up list pricing.

When I was going away to college my stepfather and I drove over to Montgomery Ward at Old Orchard to get some boxes to pack my shit in. We went around to a dock and the guy back there said, "No problem, grab any of these you want" and pointed to some empty boxes. He then left us alone. My stepfather picked up a box with a TV in it and put it in the car with the empty boxes. He thanked the guy on the dock before we left.

Darkside maybe that's what really happened to them. After the awesomeness of having both of us as good employees it was really overwhelming.

I actually chose Service Merchandise over Venture as they both wanted to hire me at the same time. Service Merchandise paid a quarter more an hour.

I worked at Randhurst in women's clothing from August 1990 til October, 1992. I remember making a killing when they offered you money if you got people to sign up for a credit card.

I worked at Service Merchandise in high school in Niles. From 1984-1986. It was my first job and I still have nightmares.

I left Service for Mcdades and worked there from 1986 til 1988.

I was an expediter at SM. Broke me hand there while taking down the stacks at the Schaumburg store when they closed. Ended up transferred to the Army Trail location, where I quit when Lacy was my boss and a total cock smoker.

Zayre and Venture were great for finding cheap 2600 games.

It greatly depresses me that I may have worked with CGS...

It's probably what made us both weird.
