1 fatally shot, 1 injured in front of Bridgeport hot dog stand


Two men were shot, one fatally, in an apparent gang-related dispute in front of a Bridgeport neighborhood fast-food restaurant Sunday morning.

About 5:20 a.m., police responded to a call of shots fired in the 900 block of West 35th Street, according to police News Affairs Officer John Mirabelli.

When officers arrived on the scene they found two men lying on the sidewalk in front of a fast food restaurant, Mirabelli said.

There is a 24-hour hot dog and sausage stand in the 900 block of West 35th Street, Johnny O’s.

One of them, a 25-year-old man, was dead on the scene, with a gunshot wound to the head, according to Mirabelli. A spokesman for the Cook County Medical Examiner’s office confirmed the death, but the office did not have the man’s identification as of about noon Sunday.

The other victim, a 35-year-old man, had suffered gunshot wounds to the shoulder, back and buttocks, Mirabelli said. He was taken in critical condition to John H. Stroger Jr. Hospital of Cook County.

The two men had been standing in line on the sidewalk outside the restaurant when they were approached by two males, Mirabelli said. An altercation ensued and the two victims were shot. The gunmen then fled the scene and as of about 11:30 a.m. no one was in custody. Police believe the incident to be a confrontation between members of two rival street gangs.
