Shooter
Quake 3 Arena - The first completely smooth online shooter in my mind. Matching was a breeze and the map design was beautiful. The BFG was born. Who needs a story line when you have this kinda gameplay?

RPG
Baldur's Gate - The big leap from Ultima games to a real RPG that felt like a true D&D experience. Before there was FF, there was the Gate.

Real-time Strategy
Age of Empires 2 - There were many RTS that were good, but none that were this balanced, which is the name of the game in RTS. A true multi-dimensional game of chess.

Sports
Sega NHL 92 - Great game... before Tipper Gore made them take the bleeding head twitching bodies out. Nothing felt as great as getting a one-timer... and it helped that Roenick and the Blackhawks were great back then.

Shooter: Doom.

RPG: Shining Force II

RTS: Command and Conquer/Sim City. Can't pick between them.

Sports: NHL '92 is a great pick.

This obviously is influenced by age. I grew up on Atari 2600, but it wasn't until the mid-1990's that I really got into gaming. I suppose if you were born in the 1980's your list is quite different.

Back when I had time to play games.....this is the winner. Spent endless hours playing this in col......um, when I was younger.

Mud, you have like 16 kids. How do you have time to play games?

Dude... when everyone is in bed. I'll grab an hour or two at night. Makes for a sleepy morning. I probably only game 4 hours a week, if that. Back in the day, I could game 4 hours a day.

Wow...I remember Caesar 2.

Need more plebs!

But it isn't an RTS.

Looked it up to see if it was 2 or 3 and was going to edit it to Sim/Strategy/whatever but forgot

Shining Force II is one of the best.

What launched the genres for me....enough quarters to pump into the games.

Especially the games that cost a whole fifty cents.

Oh....then Pong, Breakout, Pitfall (on the original Atari) and Football on Intellivison

Now I feel old
